Which NST choose ?
« on: March 16, 2020, 06:48:52 PM »
Hello,

I am working on a spark gap tesla coil and I am looking for a NST for my tesla coil. But normal NST like this (https://5.imimg.com/data5/BL/CK/MY-11783578/neon-transformer-250x250.jpg) are very expensive. So I found an other NST cheaper which is this :

(https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/32806714283.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.30ae231eF9VvEH&algo_pvid=c82d740f-1e54-452c-9673-8eece5f86d19&algo_expid=c82d740f-1e54-452c-9673-8eece5f86d19-6&btsid=0b0a119a15843803437616879eefd3&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_)

But I need to know if he can resist when the tesla coil shorts circuit it. And if he has a protection that could break the power supply off (wich is not very good)
Do you know if this NST is good for my tesla coil ?

Judging by the small size, low weight, and low cost, this is a switch-mode power supply. It will not work for a SGTC.

What you need is an old-fashioned NST with no electronics or GFI. They are big and heavy. They are approximately 9 x 6 x 5 inches in size and weigh at least 25 pounds. You want just iron and copper in the transformer, no electronics. Get the highest voltage and current that you can, ideally 12 KV or higher to make spark gap firing easier. The best that you could get would be a 15 KV, 60 ma unit but they are hard to find. 12 KV, 30 ma units are the most common and would work well.

Even modern NSTs that are big and heavy have GFI circuitry which makes them unsuitable for SGTC use. On any NST, look for a push button on the end. This indicates the presence of GFI circuitry.

E-Bay is a good place to look. You can also post a WTB (want to buy) in the "Sell / Buy / Trade" section on this forum requesting such a NST. Depending on where you live, shipping may be prohibitive. You can also try sign shops.

Old-style NSTs are becoming hard to find. Here's one I saw on E-Bay today. Not cheap though.

The solid state NST can not be used for a Spark Gap Tesla Coil, unless you rectify the output to DC and do DC charging, but even then the power output of 150W is insufficient to drive any decent size coil

I have a few 4kV 20mA SSNST and they are specified at 20 kHz. The only use I made of them was drawing arcs and power a marx generator: http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/high-voltage/24kv-marx-generator/
