Fill inside of secondary with polyurethane spray foam
« on: March 14, 2020, 04:44:45 PM »
Is it a stupid idea to fill the inside of the secondary with polyurethane spray foam to prevent arcing?

Not sure about the dielectric properties but I'd give it a fire test first, sometimes this sort of thing can go up in flames.

I'd say it was quite smart to ask first.  Since foam is mostly air (or another gas), it does not provide significant insulation.  What's worse, small bits of corona or other discharges will slowly carbonize the foam, causing conductive tracks through it.

I did learn this the hard way:)  On my Marx generator rather than a Tesla coil.

Use standard bees wax or parafin wax
easy to get out later by putting the whole thing in a warm box and melting it
If you are clever yout put a tap on the bottom of your tank to drain it.
