CT saturation
« on: February 05, 2020, 11:13:04 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have a theoretical problem with the CT.
As an example I'll use Mads DRSSTC I from http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/kaizer-drsstc-i
For his GDT he uses a B64290L674X830 Ferrite core with following specs:
AL = 5750nH
Ae = 95,89mm²
Material = N30 => saturation flux density at 25°C = 380mT
It seems like (at least some comments say so) he is using the same cores with an 1:32:32 turn ratio as CT.
His coil is current limiter is at 500A.
With one turn, his primary winding has a inductivity of L = 5,75uH.
=> Magnetic flux is  Φ = L*I since N = 1 , with  Φ = B*Ae ==> B = L*I/Ae = 5,75uH * 500A/95,89mm² = 29,98T
This would mean that the core has saturated long before, so why does it work?
Are these calculations wrong? / what am I missing ?

Kind regards

Kai

You are calculating the flux incorrectly by not accounting for the secondary winding.

Current flowing from the secondary winding generates a flux of the opposite polarity and cancels the flux from the primary.

The flux in the core is due to the current flowing through the magnetizing inductance of the current transformer. This can be calculated by the volt*second product across the winding, which is a function of the burden resistance (and winding resistance) and the current flowing through the current transformer.

Thanks.

That makes sense. So I have to be careful with this formula in transformer applications.
Seems like I had a misunderstanding of the topic.

Now I am getting useful and realistic results.
