My first DRSSTC
« on: July 01, 2019, 03:02:24 PM »
Hi,
I start this post by apologizing for my English school level, I live in Switzerland and I speak italian.
I wanted to make this post to show you my first DRSSTC, in the past I already built a SGTC and a small SSTC.
Some time ago I decided "let's go bigger!" and I built my first DRSSTC:

I wanted to start basing on a pre-existing project, because the concept of dual resonant was at the time a little bit hard for me. My DRSSTC is based on the project DRSSTC1 from http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/kaizer-drsstc-i/. I utilizzed the UD_2.7 and the H_bridge was a little variation with the "new" IXGN72N60C3H1 TO-247B IGBTs. For this Tesla Coils i also built a 5kVA variac with volt and amp meter that I need to understand what is going on.
When i started to understand better my Tesla I beginned to optimize it, after some times I was able to producing 1m of arcs. Not happy I continued to push this Tesla because I knew it can do more and then this happened...

Two of my IGBTs exploded like I ever seen an electrical component do. Later I made some adjustement but when the second batch of IGBTs exploded I understand thanks to Mads Barnkob that those little To-247B transistor where simply to small for the power I was aiming. Now I upgraded my tesla coil to CM300-24H and I don't I even have the power to explode them ahahahha those are massive!

Question:  my MMC is composed by 12 x Cornell Dubilier 942C20P15K-F in configuration 6p2s, do you think they can hold up 600A from the CM300? And if they burn the will kill my H-bridge?

Nice looking coil, I can see the resemblances to my DRSSTC1 :) Which is also what makes it easy for you to use the MMC calculator, it has both the same capacitor and my coil data in its drop down boxes: http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/calculators/mmc-calculator/

I have upgraded my own coil to a SKM200 bridge and it it ripping MIDI at 800Apeak, the MMC has survived that so far, but it is properly suffering from shortened life time. So you MMC will do fine at 600A, maybe just add a fan for forced air cooling. I would also connect the MMC cables in each their end of the copper busbar, so the current path through each string is equal, here you have a minuscule difference between the two middle pair of capacitors and the two outer pairs, this has an impact of the current sharing, it might make a difference if you push things too hard.

Those red caps for the ground rail, is that custom 3D print or something you can buy off the shelf?

Thank you for the suggestion on the attacheent of the cables to the busbar! I didn't ever thinked about that, bu I also can immagine that it didn't make so much of a difference. Yes, those red caps holding the ground ring are 3D printed and designed by me. Also the blue thing on the bottom of the toroid is a giant connector to easy remove the topload. i can share the 3D files if someone wants ;)

bdw my MMC is barely warm to the touch ahahahahah it's good but I don't really understand how is it possible :)
