Single Transistor SSTC
« on: May 08, 2017, 11:12:23 AM »
Hello and Servus!

To introduce myself i want to show you my work on a very small but powerful single Transistor teslacoil i worked on.
My objective was to achieve a remarkable output power, - compared to the coils size -, while keeping the input voltage as low as possible to power it from battery/akkumulator.
The driver should be as simple and cheap as possible.
For now i think i have achieved this objects but its still a work in progress to improve this whole setup. Next step is to implement an audio/midi interrupter via fiber optic. to keep it cheap i decided to use a Toslink fiber optic Connection, - which was originally designed for digital audio -, instead of an old, ordinary and expensive ST connection.

to simplify this circuit the step up section can be omitted, i just added this section to allow powering from a lead acid battery.
iam proud that this coil has been reproduced by Gianni Laschi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAyBtGEq4-0&t=3s

the single transistor coil is shown at the end of this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLuoPAYlZJ4

coil specs:

feel free to ask any question!
i will add pictures soon. ;-)

Single transistor with such performance.. nice! Probably a good way to save money XD

I should perhaps try to build this next.

I've watched several of your videos in Youtube too. (let me subscribe to it now :D)

I admire your work and wish to see more that you have to made :)

Hey E-Schmok,
I don't suppose you could give the specs of the coil? For some reason the link is dead for me.
Cheers.

That did not work either :(

Must be some file placement issue or perhaps the link is not accessible to the public with google photos settings?.

Perhaps putting it at google drive or dropbox might be better :)

It would be best to just upload it as attachment here, then it will stay with the thread forever.

Nice. It works now.

I was wondering where you got the toroid from, seems pretty neat.

Amazing results with just a single transistor. What frequency is it running at?

Great and simple project, many people really like the 12VDC supplied coils as they are not comfortable with mains or does not have it available, good job :)

Did you run into any problems with using the CD40106 as enable, by turning it on/off to the interrupter signal?

I could imagine that it works okay because of the high resonant frequency of the coil (what is it at?), but if the method was used on something like 50 kHz there would be missing or half signals?

If we take a look at the datasheet for the CD40106 there is curves for Transition Time (ns) and Trigger Threshold Voltage (V) that both show much changed behaviour at different supply voltages, and as the interrupter has to also charge/discharge the 100nF decoupling capacitor, the rising edge of the supply could disturb things?

I am purely guessing on a theoretical level here, so just wanted to hear if you had any troubles there?
