primary coil support

Hi all,

In http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/kaizer-drsstc-i/ Mads writes: 'I do not recommend anyone to make the same primary coil supports' and I have some trouble finding a working alternative.

Suggestions, advice & tips are very welcome.

What I meant was the through-hole solution, because it is very hard work to get it screwed into position.

You can do almost exactly the same, but then saw down through the holes, just a little off centre so you get a little snap-in to hold the tubing in place, or you can also drill small holes behind the slots to fix the coil into position with a small piece of wire or so. Take a look at my DRSSTC4 f.ex.

But I do recommend make flat spiral primary coils for DRSSTCs, they provide plenty of coupling and gets further away from the topload.

Thanks for your reply. That's just what I read, and looking at the pictures I can imaging the difficulties.

Making a flat spiral coil for a coil based on your DRSSTC1, can I use the same amount of windings?

You don't even need so many turns, as it will be tapped at a much lower number of turns, in the range of 5-6 turns in order to de-tune the primary below secondary resonant frequency.

On http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/calculators/spiral-coil-calculator/ I plotted these numbers and that seems to be a good enough solution for DRSSTC1, you can change the distance between turns if its getting too big, but too small also makes it harder to tune with a large tap connection.
