Help with multiplier
« on: March 16, 2021, 02:21:18 PM »
I'm currently collecting components to build a basic Cockcroft multiplier with the output goal of around 100kv. I am planning on running this off my 20kv p to p flyback supply and I have a good collection of 15kv 100ma 100ns diodes(2 in series per stage) but I'm not sure of the capacitor values I should use. I was thinking the standard 20kv 1nf ceramics that are cheap but I'm not 100% sure. Also I was wondering how to calculate the resistor value to use on the High voltage end to prevent pulling too much current and blowing this thing up. I'm planning on using this as a general HV DC power supply with plenty of open air discharges and would like it to last.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I used this calculator to help design my 14-stage voltage multiplier. For multiplier type use "CW Type". You can try different parameters to see what works best for your power supply.

http://blazelabs.com/cw-brm-java.asp

Here is an alternative calculator. I use both.

https://www.extremeelectronics.co.uk/calculators/cw-voltage-calculator/

Your diodes sound fast enough so they should be OK. There are two factors to consider for your load resistance: voltage rating and power. The calculator will give you estimates of output voltage and power. Your resistors need to be selected accordingly. Your minimum resistance will be the value that does not allow more current than your diodes are rated for at your maximum output voltage. The resistance will also depend on what values of high voltage high power resistors that you can get at a reasonable price. Ironically, your load resistance may end up costing as much as the rest of your multiplier or more because high voltage high power resistors are not cheap. I am going through that exercise right now myself.

For example my 14-stage half wave design puts out about 250 KV at 1 ma. 1 ma doesn't sound like much but when you convert that to output power, it comes to about 250 watts! I am using a series-parallel grouping of 21 high voltage resistors each having a resistance of 2.5M ohms, power dissipation of 12.5 watts, and 50 KV voltage rating for a total power dissipation capability of 260 watts and voltage rating of 350 KV. The total resistance is 5.8M ohms. This limits the maximum current through my diodes to 4.3 ma. My diodes are rated for 30 ma.

Thanks! That calculator is exactly what I was looking for.
