hi,

I have designed a circuit that involves a motor rotating a shaft with magnets on the shaft that have hall sensors triggering transistors to create pulsed DC. The reason I did this was because I have 2 circuits that need to be fixed in relation to each other and they need to never strike at the same time. By spacing the magnets on the shaft at specific angles, Circuit 1 never strikes at the same time as Circuit 2 and by changing the speed of the motor, I can increase or decrease the frequency and they will be relative to each other.




the lightbulb displays only one operative circuit, but there are two circuits working in this setup.

There must be a way to do this with solid state, but I didn't know how (I'm a beginner) so I had a friend with more experience design this solution and we settled for this. It works well for the low voltage pulsing DC frequencies.

So I have 2 circuits of pulsed DV around 3-12Volts (variable with green potentiometer in the image) (amperage is also variable up to 1.5A with the red potentiometer in the image)).
There are 4 magnets on the shaft for Circuit 1 and 6 on the same shaft for Circuit 2.
So each rotation will yield 4 DC pulses for Circuit and 6 for Circuit 2.
This way they stay in the same frequency ratio 1:1.5 and they never strike at the same time. It has to be that way for the final application in the "lightbulb."

I want to step up these two circuits to High Voltage to create arcing sparks across 3 electrodes.

The electrodes will be around 1/4" apart.
Circuit 1 (called Circuit A in the diagram) will jump across Electrode 1 and 2 in the bulb.
Circuit 2 or B in the diagram will jump across Electrode 3 and 2 in the bulb.
So electrode 2 is the neutral that both Circuit 1 and 2 are using.

It should be simple enough to step up the voltage but I am not sure how to deal with the back EMF.
I have a few possibilities but would like some feedback / ideas to do it the simplest and easiest way.

I thought of modifying a spark gap transmitter and using each circuit as the trigger to create the high voltage sparks and just removing the antennae, as it is not needed. That's one option.

Another option is an ignition coil driver circuit, as seen here, https://www.rmcybernetics.com/science/diy-devices/diy-ignition-coil-driver, but not sure if this will work, as the voltage will not be constant through the ignition coil and may not have a steady, clear pulsing arc across the electrodes.

In a nutshell, my basic question is, what is the best way to step up a pulsing 3-12 DC.
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi,

is there a specific reason why you use a motor and hall sensors? You could do the same thing electonically in many ways.
It of course doens't really matter how you get your results.

One interesting question would be how long and at which frequency the pulses are created. Do you have an oscilloscope screenshot or maybe a drawing of how your pulses are supposed to be?

For stepping them up, the easiest thing that comes to my mind would be a high value inductor in series which will create a HV spike when the pulse goes to zero.
If your pulses are slow enough you might also use them to simply swich on and off something like a ZVS driver.
