UD2.7 IC8 TL3116 comparator problem
« on: December 29, 2020, 01:52:22 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I have just found an issue with my UD2.7 driver during testing with the feedback signal comparator IC8. It is using a Texas instruments TL3116. I firstly checked that all components were of the correct value and all the soldered joints were okay.

I am driving the feedback input from a 50R signal generator at 50kHz, and occasionally the supply current that the board takes would drop to a lower level and the input comparator would stop working with both outputs low rather than switching at 50KHz.

I have found that the feedback through R26 and C33 which is used to give extra positive feedback and greater hysteresis for a short period after switching for extra noise immunity is taking the IN+ input outside of its common mode voltage range. The input voltage common mode range is specified at 0V to 2.5V, but the peak input voltage at IN+ was going up to 3.3V. This was with the C33=1nF and R26=470R schematic values fitted.

My fix was to change R26 to 1.8k and as a result the value of C33 had to be reduced to 470pF. Now the peak maximum voltage on IN+ is 2.2V and within the specification.

This seems to have fixed my problem with intermittent operation.

I am not sure if anyone else has experienced problems with this comparator on UD2.7 but this intermittent problem looks to have been solved from this change.

Paul

I do not know what the real issue may be, but common-mode to 3.3V is highly unlikely.  TL3116 typical common mode input range extends to +3.9V.  Even if a worst-case part, exceeding common mode on an input shouldn't cause latchup or other such issues unless going beyond supply rails by a diode-drop.
