SSTC with ballast blew my IRFP460
« on: October 29, 2020, 05:18:27 PM »
IM trying to make tesla coil driver with irfp460. I make my circuit like shown in the syscamatic . first things is that for the first attempt I used 1mm thick wire for primary coil then i see that my both ballast get extreamly heated up and also the heatsink attached to the IRFP460 although it was working it throw very very tiny arc from the topload and can light up a normal cfl bulb.
than i go for 3.6mm wire for my primary winding and attached everything as same as before and syscamatic. This time the arc can jump upto 2 inch far away but whithing 20 second my mosfet shorted or blew up i didnt guess it but it dead for sure.
Can anyone help me with this issue or modify my syscamatic so it willme more efficient and work without blowing .

Why is there a diode in series with 230-volt inductive ballasts?
How will the ballasts limit current, even the AC component, when DC current saturates their cores?

When your next MOSFET is on the sacrificial altar,
can you measure the DC current in mains circuit?

How can i rearrange the circuit or modify this i dont know how its working i just want to replicate someone else syscamatics . i measure 110v dc after the diode so maybe the mosfet resonate the certain frequancy so there are a high voltage on the secondary maybe im not sure.
can u pls modify the circuit or give me a good suggetion how can i make the tesla coil work

Most such simple circuits work only at low voltage and low power.  Occasionally someone gets luck enough to get somewhat higher power before parts fry.  The MOSFET has no protection from excess gate voltage nor from excess drain voltage.  It's likely seeing excess voltage on both pins.

Look through the SSTC thread on this forum for circuit ideas, and at some of the other web sites linked such as Mads' KaiserPowerElectronics etc.  Most circuits that function reliably have more parts.
