Voltage tripler for my medium DRSSTC
« on: September 29, 2020, 02:40:28 PM »
So i ordered three large 400v electrolytic caps (6000uf 400v) in the hope to make a voltage tripler. In my current situation i realized that the only have access to 110v 20a service. So my plan is to use a voltage tripler to get 300v on my bridge. My question is if 4 10A10 diodes in parallel for each stage would be sufficient.

I would think hard about the maths and the operation of the circuit before trying to build a tripler - for starters you'd get ~300VDC just from a doubler running on 110VAC due to the rectifier effectively peak-detecting the AC waveform.

Yes, what Hydron said.  Could use the doubler topology with no series capacitors.  One bulk capacitor for +150 V rail and another for the -150 V rail.  Then figure the RMS current at AC input and in the rectifier diodes, for a given DC output current.

Last time I did that personally was for a stroboscope using a xenon flashlamp.

okay thanks, this really helps. so your saying a doubler would be sufficient, but would the diodes work?

Yes, four parallel 10A10 diodes should be plenty.  Two should be enough if you have short leads to reasonable-sized copper shapes on your ECB or other connection method.  (Most of the diode's heat is dissipated through its leads.)  And, I agree that a doubler is likely what you want, as that gives twice the peak voltage (at no load), or 2 * sqrt(2) * 110V = 311V.  You could add the third capacitor across the doubler output to handle higher peak currents from the bridge.

If I were you I would find a 600v to 1000v 35A bridge rectifier on ebay or a online surplus electoninics store for 3$ each. it is a lot more simpler and reliable
