Picking Primary Coil Gauge and Winding Count
« on: September 16, 2020, 05:55:09 AM »
I'm in the process of choosing the specifics of my coil. My aim is for around 250kHz. I'm trying to understand the advantages/disadvantages of the different options for primary coil gauges and windings.

I understand that it is forming a resonant transformer with he secondary, but since the primary coil isn't being driven at its resonant frequency, are most options for primary coil wires (assuming they are reasonable and not something like 100 turns), essentially the same in terms of performance? I was trying to understand the difference between choosing something like a 16awg primary vs a 12awg primary other than conductive ability.

It is all about matching the primary coil inductance to your inverter current capabilities. Shown through calculations here in my SSTC design guide http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/sstc-design-guide/

Oh thanks that is actually quite simple
