Question About Inverter Voltage Doublers On SSTCs
« on: September 12, 2020, 10:25:43 AM »
I had a question regarding voltage doublers in inverter circuits.

LoneOceans uses a Delon Voltage Doubler circuit here:
https://www.loneoceans.com/labs/sstc2/sstc2schematicv10.jpg

From what I understand, the voltage doubler works by charging both capacitors to the RMS voltage, causing +/-170V across the primary as it's switching. What I don't understand is how a standard SSTC circuit (like the one below) doesn't also charge both capacitors to the RMS voltage and have them switch across the primary at +/-170V. Am I misinterpreting what LoneOceans' circuit does or how the circuit below functions?

I'm guessing that because two series capacitors are in parallel with the smoothing cap, the total voltage across both is 170V, therefore only +/-85 volts are across the primary as it's switching. Am I right with this guess?

Also, a voltage doubler seems really convenient for getting larger sparks on an SSTC. However, from my research, it seems that most people don't integrate a voltage doubler. Is there a reason why this may be?

Voltage doublers are usually used in USA or other countries with only 120VAC between phase and neutral in the house hold mains, whereas in Europe we have 230VAC between phase and neutral or 400VAC between phases.

So voltage doublers are not practical in Europe, as we get too near the maximum voltage specifications of the 600V MOSFETs/IGBTs if you also count in head room for switching transients.

You are correct in your analysis. One way of looking at it is that the voltage doubler is the time reversal of the half bridge inverter. The half bridge inverter supplies an AC waveform of 1/2 the input voltage (only +/-85 volts for a 170V bus voltage).

MOSFETs typicaly (well, its more of a historical thing nowdays with super junction FETs) have higher performance for lower voltage parts, so I think some american coilers would use 200V FETs, like the IRFP250. If you FETs are rated for the higher voltage (including voltage spikes due to switching) there is little reason not to use a voltage doubler.
