Choosing Your SSTC Resonant Frequency

I was wondering about what factors go into deciding what to make your SSTC's resonant frequency. All I currently know is you have to take into consideration the switching speeds of your parts and that lower RFs tend to have lower impedance on the primary so can create larger sparks.

I was wondering if anyone had any other advice as to how to decide what to make the RF and why that choice is made.

The resonant frequency isn't chosen exactly. In an SSTC the primary and secondary aren't a tuned circuit, as opposed to a DRSSTC. Just make sure the primary inductance isn't too low to not exceed the maximum primary peak current, which can be calculated without this guide: http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/sstc-design-guide/

The attached schematic is a 555 timer circuit for finding the resonant frequency of a coil. Just turn the pot till the LEDs are the brightest and measure the frequency using on oscilloscope or frequency counter.

MOSFETs like going fast, so as long as you can keep the currents near the specifications of your switches, they can usually be built from 50 MHz to 1 MHz, but most will be in the range of 200-400 kHz due to SSTC sparks not being that long, so there is no reason to build a huge coil with a tiny output.
