Budget USB cameras
« on: May 02, 2020, 06:50:58 PM »
Anyone has any experience with high speed industrial cameras?
I was looking a bit into it and found quite few cameras based on ON Semi PYTHON300/500 and Sony IMX 287 sensors.
Some data of sensors:
PYTHON300: 1/4", 640 x 480 pix, 815 fps
PYTHON500: 1/3.6", 800 x 600 pix, 545 fps
IMX 287: 1/29" 720 x 540 pix, 525 fps
All with global shutter, in price range of 400-500€, USB 3.0/1 conectivity, color or monochrome.
It looks like quite a budget solution for high speed video, if you dont need high resolution or above 1k fps.

As an owner of a FPS1000HD that can do 1000 FPS at 1280x720 and 4000 FPS at 640x480, I will say that to get any real useful slow motion recordings (things usually happen fast if you want to slow it down) even 1000 and 4000 FPS is not enough to get enough detail.

Resolution wise I would not go below HD (1280x720) if I ever upgrade or buy another high speed camera. It is simply not that useful for publishing stuff and professionally you can not justify to not just rent a phantom flex instead.

Those cameras listed are built to be used in high speed decision making automation, where you need to take 10 pictures of each object on a conveyor belt to pass/reject it on quality within miliseconds after passing. The software "looking" at these images are merely doing black/white comparisons according to filters or histograms, not exactly a picture quality for watching as a film. (I used to work on camera inspection systems in the brewery industry, top machines could do 10 pictures of each bottle at 50000 bottles/hour)

The only alternative to something like commercial flag ship models like the red phantom flex is Chronos 1.4 (actually built by a fellow amateur that used to frequent 4hv.org): https://www.krontech.ca/store/Chronos-1-4-high-speed-camera-p92268927

I can only advise you to NOT spend 500€ and save up 3000€ to a Chronos 1.4 instead :)
