Resonant capacitor above 1000A peak
« on: April 27, 2020, 03:54:01 PM »
I want to upgrade my existing coils and the last remaining part is the MMC. I've been looking for GTO snubbers for quite some time but i am not really happy with what i found.

WIMA GTO MKP are available but are quite expensive with around 50€ a piece. Also i hate that i have to guess the values for ESR and Rth from the general application guide.

Buying used caps from multiple sellers on Ebay is also not what i have in mind.

I have seen some huge capacitors for induction heating but they lack the necessary voltage rating.

I am thinking about buying GTO caps directly from a supplier but most of them have a minimum order of 50 - 100 pcs. Maybe someone wants to team up with me as it is a little bit over my budget.

HKFC makes all kinds of high power film caps and on paper they look really good. Maybe something like STG-01A225J1800D https://www.filmcapacitor-st.com/images/capacitors/GTO-Snubber-Capacitors-STG.pdf

They also have hv filter caps eg. STHVF-AN654K12kD (.75uF, 12kVDC, 4500Apk, 50Arms, 5mESR)  but i have no idea how much they are. https://www.filmcapacitor-st.com/images/capacitors/High-Voltage-Filter-Capacitors-STHVF.pdf
I have asked for a qoute but got no response so far. (Maybe i have to use an more official looking email  ::))

If anybody knows a supplier where i can order 10 -20 pcs. for a reasonable price i would be happy to hear.

What other options am i missing?

I'd suggest Chinese induction cooker capacitors, 0.33uF 1200VDC, 630VAC, as can easily be found on EBay and elsewhere.  For example:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/10PCS-New-BM-Capacitor-MKPH-0-33uF-630VAC-1200VDC-for-Induction-cooker-P-30-5/272271654633?hash=item3f64a7bee9:g:PJ4AAOSw9eVXXQsg
Search here for '0.33uF 1200VDC, 630VAC' on this forum for my other posts about abuse-testing these parts and my DRSSTC use.

Second this. Be sure to use many in parallel for more current.

What is the specification for your MMC? Voltage, RMS/peak currents, life time? (pulse temperature rise)

Could you throw a link to your Tesla Coil build?

What is your total budget for your MMC?

The MMC should be  1uF, 12kVdc and 150Arms to get high BPS and polyphony at 1500Apk. If i pay less than 200€ i am more than happy.

The inverter will be a double fullbridge with skm400gb125d bricks
The coils are my twinsystem (update with pictures is comming soon)

The cooker caps are really sturdy but a little bit small. I would need 240 of them and i want to reduce the number of parts.

Those arcotronics look very good. I will keep them in mind as they will make a nice MMC for my smaller coil.

I found some neat caps but i am not sure whether to take the risk and just order some. 2uF, 4kVdc and 80Arms sounds pretty good but no datasheet with further information.  2 strings with 4 Caps will get me right there for 180€

Franzoli uses same arcotronics caps, even for his big coil. Three years ago I bought over 50 of them for big fullbridge SKM400GB123DH6 coil I'll be making
If I remember correctly their Irms rating is 22A, why wouldn't they be suitable for your coil?

For example
54 0.68uF caps - 6 caps in series and 9 in parallel will give 1.02uF MMC rated 12kV, 198 Arms
Price per cap is 2.5$, total MMC cost 135$, even less with combined shipping and discount

Yep - its even more! 25A Irms and 937A Ipk for the C4ASWB_3680__H_  thats impressive  ;D I really underestimated them.

My only possible concern with these Kemet C4A capacitors is that they have no AC voltage specification.  My initial MMC used WIMA FKP1 capacitors.  FKP1 have great pulse specifications, but did not survive AC very long, even when well within all other specification limits (RMS current, peak current, peak voltage).
