Just how large?
« on: May 13, 2019, 03:04:50 PM »
Hi all,

I'm in the planning stage of my first DRSSTC system.
I'm planning on starting with a bridge of 4 FGH60N60SMD -or- FGA60N65SMD components as I want to stay with the TO-247 size for my first system.

My original desire was to use a 3 1/2 inch secondary coil form with a 1/4 inch copper tubing primary (which could be used for larger systems) but I'm wondering if this might be too large for my planned bridge.

In browsing the web I've found lots and lots of 2 3/8" dia. secondaries based on my choice of components and now I'm wondering if the 2 3/8" dia secondary might be the optional size.

So my question is just how large of a system will a bridge of 4 FGH60N60SMD -or- FGA60N65SMD support.

I don't think there is a direct relationship between secondary diameter and igbts. But you should consider the switching frequency. If you use the fgh60n65smd with a 100kHz-secondary thats a waste of money (Loneoceans achieved 270kHz), as you could get away with some igbt that switches slower and therefore are cheaper. If you want some more "benchmarks" on what is possible read mads drsstc guide http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/. You should read the third article "IGBTs".
