Detection, Counting and Measurements / Now building a spark chamber
« on: April 24, 2019, 05:41:07 PM »
I don't suppose anyone is interested in dated spark chambers but...….
I have started building a circular one using Argon gas.
Circular is much easier to seal to ensure it's gas tight.

10 Aluminium plates 200mm dia spaced at 20mm giving a 180mm high display.
Adjustable 25kV DC across alternate plates, non pulsed.

Non pulsed HV was used in the very early spark chambers but one gets spurious discharges.

If my non pulsed system doesn't work I shall have to spend, spend, spend on scintillators and
photo multiplier tubes, amps and timing extras.

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Mechanical QCW !!
« on: March 15, 2019, 08:33:23 AM »
By profession I was mechanical rather than electronic so I tend to think
in this way and like mechanical solutions.

I am building my first QCW and wondered about generating the sloping
waveform normally derived from a ATtiny for the bus voltage.

So I rigged up a small DC motor running at about 6000 RPM which is
10 milli sec per rev. This can be reduced to give 20 milli sec etc

Mounted on this is a small cardboard (!) cam on either side of which is an led and  light detector.

Wih a suitable shape to the cam the output shown on my scope is the
wave form required !
It's not quite right at present as the cam profile needs slightly tweeking.

So that's  my mechanical QCW !

Sorry to be dumb, but could someone please explain the difference between
these two methods of working?
Thanks.

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Blow up your top load !
« on: February 28, 2019, 05:22:18 PM »
Building my DRSSTC and considering my top load construction.
Bought the standard ali ducting to make it but had a mad thought...…

Scooter, garden tractor and car inner tubes are very cheap to buy,
SO. blow one up, cover in ali foil. Job done !!

The inner tube valve could be sealed for good or if
you consider inner tube may deflate over time then leave it.

Any thoiughs?

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Bleed R's for MMC caps ?
« on: February 21, 2019, 02:54:39 PM »
Looking at many MMC constructions on the net some have bleed R's across each cap but most
have none.

So, to bleed or not to bleed, that is the question?
..............Across caps rated at a few kV each!

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / STB16PF06L
« on: February 11, 2019, 04:21:54 PM »
I have started to build Steve's DRSSTC 1.
I have hunted ebay and the net  (Digikey and Mouser etc) to source
the above Mosfet  in Steve's driver....
....https://www.stevehv.4hv.org/new_driver.html

Could anyone point me to where I might get itfrom, please?
Or a substitution that is available, maybe.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Pin connections
« on: January 26, 2019, 12:09:38 PM »
Could someone please tell me which of these two queried pins is the positive connection
on a IF-D95T opto receiver?
Thanks.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Strokes caused by Tesla coils
« on: October 11, 2018, 03:21:53 PM »
Hi,
Has anyone had a stroke due to using any type of Tesla coil.
SGTC, SSTC etc.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Chineese spark aways !
« on: September 05, 2018, 02:30:21 PM »
I've just finished making the first of two half bridge SSTC's.  Nothing unusual and about to test it soon.

I have seen on eBay for about 30 quid a complete SSTC, minus prim and sec coils,12v and HT supplies.
They have a built in interrupter and audio jack for sq wave music.

music.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SSTC-integrated-drive-board-finished-solid-state-Tesla-coil-TC/282955612499?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

They seem very cheap and compact and I wonder if anyone has ever bought one and
what the results are?

Vacuum Tube Tesla Coils (VTTC) / Coils in close proximity
« on: July 05, 2018, 05:18:10 PM »
I wish to run two independent VTTC's (GU81's) in close proximity to each other.
The pri/sec coils will have a gap betwen them of about 100mm.

I cannot foresee any snags but someone else may know otherwise, please.

Vacuum Tube Tesla Coils (VTTC) / Bach on sparks!
« on: June 17, 2018, 09:14:12 AM »
There doesn't seem much interest in VTTCs here, only one thread, but...….

I've just built VTTC using 2 GU81 valves. 2 MOT's in parallel. Full wave rectification.
Sec coil 750 turns.
Getting a HV variable capacitor in order to  tune the primary.

Will be modulated to play Bach's Toccata and Fugue, not for organ but for sparks ! :)

Have tested it with a 555 astable osc so far and it sounds OK.
