Title: MMC orientation and variac

Which way was supposed to have a few more benifits, the cap parallel across the primary or the cap in series. Check out the variac I scored last week. I can almost lift it, it is rated 45 amps. Got it for 20 bucks. Probably won't use it this time but is nice to look at and pet. :)

You want the capacitor in series with the primary (spark gap connected directly across the transformer HV output). This reduces the chance of destructive high frequency oscillations feeding back into your transformer.
