DRSSTC V1 using BSM150

Hi all,

First DRSSTC has just had a successful music test at full voltage.

I started building this in January, and its been evolving with new and upgraded components as my knowledge has grown and having a few failures along the way.  I eventually lucked out getting some cheap IGBT bricks after burning out some 60N60’s and then upgraded the secondary to bring the resonant frequency down.

Thanks everyone for all the help and support - there is a wealth of knowledge in this forum if you take the time to look for it.   I couldn't have done it without the myriad of posts/photos/vidoes of the members.  It certainly feels like quite an achievement to get one of these things finally working!

Final specification is as follows:

Bridge: 2x Eupec BSM150GB1200DN2 IGBT's in full bridge configuration
Supply: 240V AC 10A rectified bridge, 3x1800uF 420V capacitors in parallel
Primary: Inner diameter 15cm, 4.5 turns, 6mm copper at 6mm edge to edge spacing. 
MMC: 0.22uF (8 Dawncap DTR 0.44uF 6000V in 2P4S configuration).
Secondary: 1500 turns of 0.31mm wire, 11cm diameter, 62cm long
Secondary Resonate Frequency: 138kHz    Primary at 130kHz.
Topload: 3d printed 15cm x 55cm covered in foil tape
Driver: UD2.7C. OCD set at 400amps.  IGBT’s stay fairly cool so I’m sure I can push it higher, but will need to water cool my primary as that is what currently gets hot and starting to melt my 3d printed supports.

Nice coil, and nice sparks! I like the size, it is small enough that it does not take too much space, basically a large tabletop coil.
I am building something similar right now, since I got the same IGBTs for cheap as well - well, actually I was building the coil till I got sidetracked with my induction heating project.

One thing I noticed however is the primary cable going in from above, which seems dangerous to me since it increases risk of flashovers / arcs hitting the primary cable. I recommend connecting from below instead, even if it is a bit more troublesome.

Yes, good point, I will rectify.  I've been putting the breakout point on the opposite side to the cable, but realise this is just playing with fire.

I guess that's an easy first step, so I might as well give it a go.  To be honest I haven't measured the temperature of the primary, but I can smell the PLA after a decent run and it's too hot to touch.
