Capacitor testing
« on: August 05, 2021, 05:02:21 AM »
Greetings.  I'm working (playing, actually) with flyback drivers and have some that no longer work.  I can test the individual components, and, for capacitors, I've been using a dedicated cap meter that displays capacitance.  Is this an adequate way to confirm that a cap is okay, or do I need something else, e.g. an ESR tester?

Thanx!

Its not an absolute guarantee but its probably good enough. The biggest problem is that the capacitor must be taken out of circuit to test.

I have found that ceramic caps in multipliers measure somewhere near correct at test equipment levels but at elevated voltages they are breaking over internally destroying their ability to be a capacitance

Are there better kinds of caps than ceramic?

Better than ceramic!!

depends
silver mica tend to be more robust with high peak currents and are  the lowest loss ( hence their use in professional Induction heater tuned circuits)
Polystyrene have extremely low loss

Large polyester have a price advantage over mica and polystyrene

all depends on how you are mistreating them. If they are getting hot (losses) then ceramic and Mica are the only choices
