Building an optically coupled CCD/CMOS + Scintillation Imaging System

Hello! I have finally managed to get an X-Ray source up and running and have captured some images with it by simply pointing my DSLR (original Canon 5D) at a scintillation screen. This gives surprisingly good detail, but Im looking to maximize the detail I can get given that the tube has a 0.16mm focal spot. Here are two images taken with my existing method.




Ideally what I would like to do is build a lightproof box with the scintillator at one end and a camera of some type at the other end, but I do not know where to start with selecting the camera, the optics, etc. I know most non flat-panel detectors are a camera coupled via fiber optic or some other intermediate material, but as an amateur that seems out of reach. Id like to do it with an off the shelf (ebay) camera and a standard lens if possible.

For reference, the scintillator is 8x10 and I would like the enclosure to be as small as possible, so Im assuming a lens with a small focal length is ideal, but I do not know how to go about calculating what I need.

If anyone has experience with this or some insight on what I should be looking for in a camera, please let me know!

EDIT: I found a calculator that lets you find the focal length required for a subject size at a given working distance. I arbitrarily chose 300mm as the working distance and found that I would need a 5.2mm lens for a 1/3" sensor (commonly available on eBay). Thats quite small so if I want to keep 300mm as the working distance, I would want a larger sensor (1/2", etc) I believe.
