500kV High Voltage prob design (Reverse engineering)

Hello everyone,

I want to design a high voltage probe that could help the users of high voltage generators. I need suggestion from you people about this because I found this probe very compact and robust (I hope it will be after manufacturing) as compared with other commercial probes (by North Star https://www.highvoltageprobes.com/products/high-voltage-probes/ ).
My plan for this is:
1. Do a theoretical calculations on paper and Ltspice (circuit simulation)
2. Design a 3D model
3. Make electrostatic simulations.
4. Transient simulation of the 3D-model
5. Fabrication method (that will be discussed later after preliminary works)

Will this be helpful for the users of high voltage because what I think is that diagnostic of any high voltage system should be accurate and reliable. I have attached the research paper regarding this probe. Thanks.

Thanks. Let me simulate with Marx generator and then I will made a comparative analysis on it (using Ltspice). As, for as the voltage is concerned 100kV will be a lower value as I am targeting a generalized probe (more than 100kV and up to 1000kV). I will update the results soon.

I go through 100 kV probe article and I don't find it compact and easy to made. The main reason is that they are using capacitors (40pF-5 kV) to design this. This can be seen in the picture attached.
So, I am targeting 500 kv design due to compact design and metallic discs. My main goal right now is to complete the simulation work for this probe. So, in the next discussion I will upload my 3D design (using SolidWorks).

Interesting project idea! It sounds like you want it to have a bandwidth in the 10's of MHz, any specific range? Also if I understand correctly, it would be a capacitive divider probe and not suitable at low frequency or DC?

I will be interested to follow this and would like to help out if I can. I have access to a manual lathe and mill as well as ANSYS EM simulation software, let me know if there are any design or prototyping steps I can help with.

I'm always happy to see others trying this. You might find some of my work on 4HV.org useful, though the lower compensation end turned out to be garbage a Vector Network Analyzer revealed a normal 10X 100MHz probe worked well for the low voltage end.
