Secondary Design Tool
« on: April 14, 2019, 08:00:59 AM »
Hi everyone!

Yesterday I created an excel sheet that should help anyone to get a fitting secondary design. The idea is that you only need to know a secondary radius and the programm calculates everything from there. In reality you need to know coil length, diameter and wire diameter, but my tool helps you with the other two variables.

Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_ASlYX6LFijzV-2bQJYmVhX-QVutM4oa/view?usp=sharing

It is not done yet, as I'm still working on it. I would like to get some feedback on the conditional colouring and if you find any mistakes/have any ideas please let me know. I checked one coil with javatc already and everything seems like it works. Btw: I used Mads Sheet to create mine, but it isn't just copy and paste.

Tutorial:
1.) You enter your coil "Wanted Diameter" and "Wanted Ratio" in the two black boxes on the top. Then you go down and look where you have green fields and not yellow ones.
2.) Now you will have to find the wirediameter left to the green box(es) and copy the nearest wirediameter (you can buy) into the grey box "Global Wire Diameter". That is all of your input done.
3.) Now you can look to the right. The area where the two green areas intercect is your safety area.
Any of these coils should work fine.

I think I will create some sort of software which will then export the double green rows into javatc format. That shouldn't be too hard.

I guess noone was really interested so far, but I have a first version for anyone interested.

Here is the GUI:

Important: Use the ',' and not '.' to write point numbers.

How to operate it:
The GUI offeres two seperate calculations
-) An wirediameter approximation
-) JavaTC3D files

The wirediameter approximation:
1.) Enter the Coil Diameter and change the Ratio if you want.
2.) Then click Approximate
3.) It tells you what Wirediameters work for a coil with your Diameter
The result is not absolute. Pick a wiresize close to what you can buy.

JavaTC3D files:
1.) Enter your Coil Diameter and the calculated Wirediameter (or your own)
2.) Click Calc my Coils
It will tell you whether you made an error (red), are off with your sizes (yellow), everything is fine (green)
3.) Put a Path to put these Files in the Box at the bottom
4.) Click Output JavaTC
It should tell you aswell if something didn't work. I didn't let my app to delete any files so that might be a problem you will be facing.

This is my first ever Visual Basic Code ever. If you have any questions or tips please let me know. I will further improve this, but I don't think I will put it on GitHub, as it is really ugly code.

I hope this can help someone with the designpart.

"Installing":
You download the SDT-GUI.zip and you just execute the exe. Just make sure that both the exe and the java file are in the same folder or else the will be an error.

EDIT: Even newer version, I was really busy

So I guess this is a tripple post, but there have been some major improvements. I added a global filter, you can now choose what coils you want to export, if there is an error with the exporting it opens the explorer so you can fix any collisions, you have a coil explorer at the bottom so you can analyse a coil and seem many numbers (all numbers have been checked with javatc, just the ac resistance is way off most of the times, as javatc uses a compensating formular and I don't, just keep that in mind when using it).

Here is the new GUI:

If there isn't much of a response this will most likely be my last post, as quad posting isn't that liked around here.

If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know.

Great job on doing more calculations on the magic 50k impedance, however you do get very narrow around it and remember, it is just a guide line, many other configurations work.

In your GUI the slider only have a narrow defined range and no scale, it only goes up to 110mm.
It is not possible to make calculations on coils outside of 45-55k, which is a shame, it is also good to see the the outer limit results.

You made a nice little tool, especially with the JavaTC export.

I know the slider bothers me too, but you can always add your own value in the box above and "override" the slider. But I will look into a better solution for a quick input.

Atleast for me the [Filters] opens the sidemenu where you should be able to input your own boundaries for the Impedance and Ratio. Uppon changing those values it does a recalculation on all Calc Buttons.
Or maybe you didn't use the last version? The last one is 1.2

I did put the Impedance out of the way, so inexperienced coilers, who don't even know what Impedance is, don't have to worry about it just yet.

The only way I can get it to calculate something, getting a green button, instead of 0 result yellow. Is by setting the filters low enough, but I have to use approximate wire diameter and fill for it to calculate anything. If I manually enter a wire diameter it just returns 0 results.

The fill results also seem to always be very close to the upper limit for impedance. If I try to get something stupid like 10k impedance, the program crashes :)

I think I know whats wrong. I knew that this would be a problem. Write 0,3 and not 0.3 . The program is stupid. I think it sees 0.3 as 0. I will try to fix this.

From now on I will post the newest version on GitHub:
https://github.com/Fumeaux/SDT-GUI.git

If you want to use a working version you need to download from the master branch under "SDT-GUI/SecondaryDesignTool/bin/Debug/" the file "SecondaryDesignTool.exe". I can't garantee that any other branches version will work at all.

The reason for this change is that I don't have to constantly post whenever I changed something.

Hi, can you explain exactly how your code works in the program, what are the formulas used to calculate in the Coil.cs file?

thanks in advance
