newbie question here... terminating non-household wires...
« on: September 03, 2019, 03:57:23 AM »
Id like to terminate un-needed wires from a low voltage 60hz transformer in side a fully closed UL case. i only find examples of in wall type 120V terminating with cap nuts. Wire connectors are left tied out of the way in computer and server cases all the time.

Wire nuts dont seem to be right in this application.

Hi Patrick.

How about crimp caps?  Same as you would use for making a crimp-style insulated pigtail splice, but with only one wire.

A few years ago I helped a friend with some wiring on his boat.  Was told that no screw-on wire nuts are permitted in the code for on-board wiring.  Will guess that the wire contact pressure and plastic deformation are insufficient, when the connections are subject to wires moving around on top of temperature extremes and corrosive atmospheres.

Anybody ever see a wire nut in a car, other than by DIY-ers?  What do car audio installers use for field splices, for example a power tap?

I usually bend the wire end and put a piece of heatshrink over it so that the wire end is kept inside the shrinked plastic, where no harm can really happen… you can also put a heatshrink piece two times the length, put the bent cable in the first half, selectively heat that end, twist the non shrunk end like a sock and bend it over to wrap the shrunk part and heat it to end up with a somewhat sealed end

Since you already have a UL standard enclosure, you should have a DIN-rail available to install some wire terminal blocks on and connect all the wires up to that, leaves it open for future use, its installed as all other wires according to standard.

Alternatively I would also use the heat shrink on each wire and bundle the unused stuff up around the transformer.

I second the crimp-cap idea, but have also seen the glue-lined heatshrink used on wires (especially with no stripped-copper exposed) - if you squish the empty end while hot it will tend to completely seal off due to the glue.

All that said, I have no idea what is acceptable from a regulations compliance standpoint, and I do know that things vary with jurisdiction (e.g. I wouldn't normally see or use wire nuts).
