I am new here and I want to share a new idea.

For many years I thought: how cool would it be to have a high frequency 10,000 Hz 10KW alternator like the one Tesla patented in 1891 and used in his experiments, especially with driving a continuous wave Tesla coil? There is a modern piece of hardware that might lend itself to just such a task!

But nothing like that has been built in decades since Tesla's time. Outside the simple world of the consumer in the commercial/industrial machinery world,
there is a premium grade of alternator made by Delco Ramy, that is used on long distance trucks, busses, fire engines, ambulances, etc.

The one I have is a 12v 160A 36SI Delco Ramy Alternator. It is designed to run at full load under hot hellish conditions for years.

A 12v 160A alternator you can buy for your car and one of these big boy alternators, even though they are both 12v 160A they are like night and day.

What would make this special to the Tesla crowd are some startling features the crap at the local auto parts store's alternator will never have.

-Brushless operation. There are no slip rings for the field coil. The field coil is stationary, go figure!
-The alternator is designed to run happy at a maximum continuous RPM of ten thousand RPMS with an intermittent period in the twelve thousand range.

So if you can get your hands on one of these premium grade alternators at an industrial scrap yard, clean it up, run it off a three-phase motor geared up to 9,00RPM
with a VFM box; it will give over 10KW @ 110v high frequency 3-phase AC.

This is a good modern stab at a Tesla alternator as far as I can see.

Now, three poles rotating at a conservative 9,000RPM would equal 27,000Hz?
So, gentlemen, at just 100A this baby would give 110v 100A (11KW) 27Khz.......step that up with a ferrite core transformer to 1,000v.

1,000v @ 10.15A (-/+) 27Khz sine wave AC........that sounds like a classic modern day Tesla Alternator to me.

The possibilities for experimenting with Wireless power, Tesla style HF electrodeless lighting, induction heaters, silent arc lamps, audio magnetic amplifiers....are endless!

Your thoughts?

I also own the bigger 40SI which is good for 240A but a lower tolerance in continuous RPM at 9,000.

There is a youtube video ad of a trucker saying a truck he was driving with a 36SI alternator passed a million Miles on it, no problem.

With a disgustingly overbuilt, brush-less pig of an alternator, I'm not surprised.

A Tesla coil running off a HF alternator could make for some interesting experiments like what Tesla did
It would be quite something to compare to a solid-state Tesla coil or a vacuum tube Tesla coil.

I imagine the output could be jacked up with a giant ferrite core transformer from the alternator.

Yes, ANY car alternator can produce 110v output.

Imagine grounding one side of a Tesla coil and doing some "True Wireless" article flavored replications of Tesla's transmission of electricity?

How about rectifying the output and running a serious DC rotary sparkgap Tesla coil?

I thought that the obvious way to do this without resorting to this super industrial (possibly hard to find cheap) commercial alternator was to take a common car alternator,
rip out the field coil and replace it with some doughnut magnets and pull out the brushes. But I don't think a Joe Blow grade alternator's bearings are up to the strain of 10k RPM.
And you wouldn't be able to manipulate the voltage by adjusting the field coil current because.....permanent magnet
