Hello,
It seems that I'm the second member  :) - or nobody follows forum rulses  ;)
Anyway, My name is Zbigniew or Zbig for short.  I live in Warsaw, Poland with my family. I'm  newbie in Tesla Coil area, but quite experienced electronic engineer and programmer (PC and embedded systems - AVR and ARM).
I've  discovered Tesla coils recently and make some experiments with it, so eventually I;ve found this forum and decided to share my experiments with other enthusiasts.

Zbig.

Hi all,

My name is Ton DaiKen Akveld, I am from The Netherlands and I have been interested in Tesla coils for quite some time. Decennia ago I studied electronics, medcine and spent most of my working life in IT management. Nowadays I am a zen teacher and just bought a small musical Tesla coil (see attached), which started my appetite to (finally) start building one myself. Currently I am reading a lot on the subject and found the book 'The ULTIMATE Tesla Coil Design and Construction Guide' by Mitch Tilbury which I bought years ago. Hope to learn from and contribute to this forum a lot!

Kind regards,

Ton DaiKen

Welcome both Zbig and Ton :)

Thumbs up for spending a few minutes on a introduction, I hope you will study hard, read a lot and ask some good questions so we can crack our brains together :)

Ton, the book you are referring to is about spark gap tesla coils SGTC and that can not be audio modulated like the onetesla kit that you have, that type is called a DRSSTC and I have a unfinished guide on designing such, sorry but it is a long work to write all that: http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/

I also have a few calculators to aid instead of the spreadsheets: http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/calculators/mmc-calculator/ and the rest at http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/calculators/

Thanks for your reply, Mads.
I am aware of the difference between the sg- and (musical) drsstc's. When I bought the book several years ago, not much was known about the dssstc's (to me at least) and I like the math in the book.
I already took a look at your guide and am very pleased with it, so I hope you keep up the good work!

Kind regards.

I think it's my turn :)
Hello everybody!
I'm not really a new member, just forgot to reply here.Anyways here I am,a 15 years old hungarian boy from Romania.I live in a village with my parents and my brother.I'm learning mathematics and c++ programming in high school. Please excuse if my english is bad,or I say/said something incorrect :)

I'm addicted to elecronics probably since I got electicuted when I was 3 :) I started experimenting with mechanical electric systems, like electromagnets, solenoids and motors.About one and a half year ago I joined to the world of high voltage. The first failed attempts of a sleyer exciter just made more determined to get to a higher level.Over time I spent more and more time with electronics, mainly with tesla coils.
In december,2016 a slayer exciter tesla coil was completed, which produced 2-3cm arcs.I was really happy with it,but other coils on the internet motivated me to make something more mindblowing. This is my actual dream:to make a dual resonant solid state tesla coil!
Sadly, things are going hard,I have very small knowledge about electrical circuits and my experiments usually fail.A pile of semiconductors, like BJTs,MOSFETs,IGBTs,other ICs,a MP4 player and my phone's motherboard give up to work while experimenting.I choose the hard way...
But not just bad things happened.I learnt a lot and had some succesfull projects, which I'm really proud of.

The reason why I registrated here is to ask for help at various problems and to help other people to avoid the same mistaked which I did.

I wish you all the best!

Wow.. I can't believe I missed this thread!

I'm Chris from Perth, Australia. For as long as I remembered I've always been fascinated with computers, electronics and mechanics. I've been working as a cnc machinist for 10+ years now. I've designed and built two four stroke engines, built a few gaming PC's but the one thing that always pulls me back in are Tesla coils!

The first one I built had about 10mm discharge.... Small but it was a start! Since then I've learnt quite a bit but have much more to learn. I'm learning quite a bit from this forum, hopefully oneday I'll be able to give sound advice to newcomers of Tesla coils.

Hello everybody!
My name is Giulio Cassano, from Italy, and I am new in this forum from two days ago under suggestion of Mads, thank you Mads!
I've finished the school one year ago and now I work as a electrician, I hope is momentaneus job because I want to find the way for me.
Always attracted by electronics, robotics, mechanics and everything that is scientific, I've built a lots of device and I have a good quality to make it work with " poors man" material :')
I don't remember when I discovered tesla coils but it was love at first seen! And I Starts to build prototype with empirical methods and now I have a moderate knowledge about tesla coil but I hope to understand the most possible about it.
Between my hobbies there are also motors..
I'm a superbike freestyle stuntman and motocross rider and I like build off roads prototype cars and Go-Karts, I'll be happy to show it to you if you want :)

Hi, my name is Andrei. I have been searching about the topics you talk on this forum for some time. Since I was 16 years old maybe, now 28. But I don't work with hv. It was very good that I found this forum on google. Nice forum name by the way, it is the first thing I typed, "high voltage forum". :D Maybe sometimes I will use some weird word in some wrong place, by accident, that is because english is not my first language.

I tried to build a small Tesla coil some years ago, it didn't work. I was using a flyback with low power as primary transformer. Some weeks ago I put together a hv transformer, calculated to put out 13.8kV @ 100mA. The winding has a lot of resistance, so with no load, it may hit 14kV and a bit more. Then of course I decided to build a new Tesla coil. It already worked, very weak. I will get into details on another topic. Thank you.

For some reason my internet provider won't allow me to enter this site. So I'm using the mobile service, hope they fix it soon. When I call them, they know nothing.

Welcome Giulio, Anurag and Andrei.

I am looking forward to see your projects and help you along the way building/troubleshooting it.

Good that you found a way to the forum Andrei, hopefully you get it fixed with your ISP, don't worry too much about your English, it seems fine for discussing technical issues :)

Hello all,

I've been a 4hv member since.. 04? Figured I would venture to this forum to see whats new.  I studied electrical engineering in college, then went to work for a medical device manufacturer designing buck converters and digital circuits.  Done a lot of microprocessor design and written a lot of firmware and some computer software.

I got into electronics when my dad showed me a magazine article of building an electric fence.  Been hooked ever since.  Played with HV and coil guns for a number of years.  Now trying to start my own business off an energy storage idea.  I look forward to contributing, learning, and helping others learn.

Welcome Nick!

Always nice to see some electrical engineers that also has electronics as a hobby, there is fewer of you than there used to be.

I know you can not write much about your business development and products, but please do share if you have good information that would not endanger your own future sales :)

Hi everyone,
I'm Lucia from London, UK.
I am an electronics hobbyist with an interest in static electricity, sparks, plasma and music-related projects. Recent projects include a static detector and musical neon oscillator. I would like to make a Tesla coil, but they look quite difficult.
I hope I can learn from this forum, and help others to learn.  :)

Hi All,

I've been into electronics for over 35 years and I'm an RF design engineer. It is my passion, being a career and a hobby.

I tinker with high power high voltage Tesla coils for fun. I've been on 4HV for quite a long time, and been into Tesla coils for about 15 years.

House moves and other pressures have limited how much time I have been able to put into the hobby, but I am hoping to get back to my DRSSTC conversion of my 14" coil.

I'm from the UK.

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi guys, my name is Andy Kay and I'm from England. I had an interest in electronics from an early age, and after attending university I started work in the industrial electronics field, moving on to telecommunications, and quickly found myself in software development. I'm now retired and revisiting the electronics scene. High voltage has caught my interest, Tesla coils, voltage multipliers, Jacob's ladders, etc. and I'd like to learn more about this stuff. Hoping this is the place to find instruction and inspiration.

Edit (9-May-2018):
I've been here a little while now and I've enjoyed reading the posts. I had tried to sign up to 4HV but got no response, so very happy to have found this site. Just want to say a big thank you to Mads.

Greetings everyone

My name's Felix, I'm an electronics engineer edit:ing student in Switzerland. I began building Coils in my apprenticeship and have built my first SGTC with around 300kV output (30cm sparks). Afterwards I immediately started building my DRSSTC which is nearly tripple the size of my SGTC. Well, long story short.... I'm currently stuck caus it won't work, so thats why i'm here :o
I worked with my coils for around 3 years now.

Great to meet you guys  ;D

Well, little about myself – I'm a 24 y.o. dude, living in Ukraine and doing electronics for hobby. Got special passion for HV stuff.
Already got plenty of cool projects, bot they're mostly known only in my region, I rarely appear on foreign forums.

Well, I hope you'll be interested, I'll tell about some of them in the topics. :)

Hello everybody, greetings from Iceland.

My name is Gabríel Snær, Translates to Gabriel Snow. I am 21 years old, I am a electrician, electronics technician, and currently a student and teacher teaching digital electroncis and theory of electricity. I have interests in far too many fields. The Tesla coil has captivated me since I first saw highvoltagefeathers Tesla coil play sail many years back. I attempted to build a SSTC a year and a half ago but It was my finals project so I had a deadline, I go it runnig int time but it was poorly optimized and tuned.

I want to make another DRSSTC that is audio modulated, I am learning the physics behind the Tesla coil deeper. I came to this forum to learn and see how others are making their Telsa coil, I currently plan on replicating a supported DRSSTC and interrutper and in building learn from it to hopefully design my own customized one. I have made many projects over the years, I have sadly never documented them. This year I plan on starting a YouTube channel where I build projects and then later upload a video that goes over the theory involved in the project, be it physics or programming.

I am really impressed by the number of people that are active on this forum. Currently the best sounding coils I know of are Highvoltagefeathers, Eric Goodchilds and Fabrício H. Franzolis's coil which I think are based on Steve Wards DRSSTC.5, correct me if I'm wrong. If you guys have any info on that I would love to set up a correspondence or thread to discuss and piece the build together  ;D

Hope to use this forum a lot.

Welcome both Dash and Gabriel

You have come to right the place for seeking out help on building a DRSSTC and if you want to discuss or get feedback on your previous projects just give it a god on making a thread about them, there is always something to learn from both SSTC/VTTC construction that can be taken into the DRSSTC realm

I look forward to write and read with you :)

Hi black.yang and welcome to HVF

Impressive coils, outstanding work on the digital driver and great to have someone on the forum that understands Chinese, as you could see in the aliexpress driver thread, we do have a hard time when all we have available is google translate and sometimes a lot of text comes on pictures.

Please do make a thread or two to show some of your best coils, I took a look at your youku account (Chinese pendant to youtube?) and you have a good variety of work there.

I too made a pulse skip driver, based on analog hardware (the UD 2.7c).

If you have been able to get sword-like sparks, or even some interesting results using pulse skip behavior, please share it.

The driver I designed is at

https://github.com/profdc9/DRSSTC-PCB-Pack/tree/master/ud29

And the thread where I show the waveforms and results is

https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=346.0

Thanks for any experience you can shared about your pulse skip driver behavior.

Hello!

Experimentonomen here, i used to be registered over on 4hv.org but eventually forgot about the site when life called, and now the login seems disabled, so i found my way here through the irc channel.

Since then i've had a few jobs, moved to an apartment, got a cat and bought a truck which im currently sinking most money into repairing things that has broke since buying it around a year ago.

As i had a day job consisting of taking apart all kinds of electronics for the past 4-5 years i kinda lost interest in the hobby at home, but now as that workplace shut down last year and i now work as a driver instead, im starting to think of projects to do again.

Experimentonomen, it has been many years since you were last on IRC and it was good to see you active again, got any projects on your mind?

Bambinz, your english is more than good enough for getting your message across, do not worry too much about that. When you make a thread about your design/work, please just include as many details, written in text and pictures of the things in question, makes it much easier to help you :)

I'm interested in all technical aspects of all domains, active in local associations and launched some local things like a collective vegetable garden and a repair café in my village

Last but not least, currently workin at a major grid management company in Brussels as a contractor, which is somewhat related to the interest I have in HV :)

Hi Shrad and welcome to HVF

Got any high voltage projects going on for the hobby or professionally?

Not for the moment, except maybe some tube amplifiers which are waiting to be designed and built (some GU50 would be glad to go out of their box)

Right now I'm distilling ideas on a guitar amp based on a mosfet follower with high amplitude preamp to experiment on a more qualitative approach of guitar amps

Hello everyone. I've been doing electronics on and off for about 10 years. I've been in the power supply industry for 5 years now.

I made a small solid state tesla coil in college in 2010. Ever since then I've been trying to design something new, but could never keep up with Steve Ward and everyone else- especially on such a low budget. Between that and life taking me through many twists and turns, I never really got anything else done.

Now that I have worked a few power electronics jobs, including high voltage and radar, and my life has stabilized, I'm ready to get back into it! The catch is that I don't have much time, but I have a pretty good budget. Not to mention, I'm actually knowledgeable about the stuff, now!

My first goal is to make a handheld lightning gun, like Steve Ward's. I can't wait to post my progress here.

Hi there. I'm another shiftee from 4HV.org.  Came looking for a more active forum.
I've been a professional electronics engineer for over 30 years now, but I've been messing with electronics since I was about 8. I'm also interested in physics and chemistry, PC gaming, gardening and sea fishing from my kayak.
I live in New Zealand with my wife, two daughters, three cats,  two rabbits, 7 frogs, and however many wild ducks my daughter is feeding at present.

Hi All,

So I am Jeff and I live near to Bristol in the UK.

I have always been interested in electronics but decided to go for Chemical Engineering as a career, now I try to keep the hobby going with a handful of projects.

I found this forum while looking for info to help with my 2500w induction heater project - lava maker as my 6 year old son calls it!

I have attached a picture of my latest induction heater setup, this used 8 off 750W 12V server PSU (2 in parallel and 4 series) to give a de-rated 3kW unit operating in 12, 24, 36 and 48V increments. The first unit with 4 PSU in series needed to be de-rated and didn't survive!

I also included a solid state relay for simple on/off control, 50A RCD for over current and a bunch of 4mm RC bullet connectors and 10AWG silicone cable.

Looking forward to many interesting discussion.

Jeff B

Welcome to all new members on HVF, good to see you pop inhere and give a word or two about yourself.

@Johnf, I hope we get a share of your huge experience, that is a serious business end you are in where high voltage/current/frequency is actual in commercial use.

@Coupling, A portable handheld QCW is no easy task, looking forward to see how you execute that project!

@Twospoons, do you have any projects going on that we will get to see?

@Jeff B, the induction heater threads have really taken off with experiments with the, now so cheap, Chinese units, so good to see another chime in with more experience on using these.

My current project list isn't terribly exciting : High CRI LED lighting for my wife's art studio, a tube phono preamp so I can hear all my old vinyl, and some improvements to my 3d printer.
I suppose I should dig out my half-built VTTC and finish that off. Its been gathering dust for far too long.

Hi.  My real name is Rich. Grew up and have lived most of my life around San Francisco Bay, California.  Have used the name klugesmith at the 4hv.org forum for about 1000 posts over 10 years, and on ebay long before that. Day jobs in recent decades have been about time-domain electronic instruments and serial data communication.  Now 500 mV is a "large" digital voltage swing, and 10 ps errors get attention in meetings.

High voltage (where electricity can go outside the wires without help) is a hobby, along with mechanical and optical tinkering etc.  Especially when there are teaching opportunities.  I hope this forum will be an inspiration to do more making.

Hello everybody,

I'm a French electronics hobbyist, and I'm in the last year of high school.
I fell into electronics when I was 9 years old, assembling Velleman kits and tearing down broken appliances for the components.

I joined this forum to discuss about HV and electronics

I'm interested in HV, radio frequency, power electronics and classic electronics.

Hi. Im a 19 years old guy interested in nearly everything technical or scientific.
I was thinking about building my first SSTC for a long while. Now I managed to buy most of the components that i need.
All my project began with a thought of reconstructing a interesting machine from scratch in the simplest form possible.
Thanks to that and years of failing my way to working solutions i have gained tons of experience.
One of my first HV projects was a push-pull TV trafo plasma speaker. It still works and I'm still impressed it didn't blew up.
I will talk about my creations in the dedicated topics.

Hi folks!  ;)
My name is Sebastian and I live in Massachusetts in the US. I'm 17 and have been into engineering and science my whole life. I can't believe how many other high schoolers are on this forum! (I thought I was alone. lol) In terms of my hobby, I've started doing electronics projects about a year ago and discovered the world of HV by accident because I was reading about spark gap radio and then somehow found out about SGTCs. Since I don't have a flyback, I decided to make a SSTC instead. Last week I finally got it working! (though it's poorly optimized). My goal is to turn my tesla coil into a guitar amplifier by pulse width modulating the interrupter signal with audio.

Thanks for the welcome!  ;D

Hello All,

My name is Brian. I am some kind of software / hardware developer (IoT stuff mostly) from Wisconsin. I have a two-year degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from a local technical college. I have been interested in high voltage since I was a kid, and have made a marginally successful spark-gap Tesla coil with hopes to complete many more projects in the future with the help of this amazing forum.

Nice to meet you!

Hi High-Voltage Members !

My name is Andi and I was born in Germany, 1994. Did my technical college some years ago and works now as an 5-Axis CNC machinist. I love working with metal but I saved the electronic stuff for my hobby wich I began about the age of 14 I think.
But this was not that easy, there´ve been the WWW but was way to young to use it properly and it was not as good as it is now ^^ So I had to read books or ask my grad dad who also did electronics but real old school (he´s born 1935) but so I learned by heart. As I get older and also the Internet began to developed, it was very simple to do researches about circuits, parts and these things ! And some time I saw something super strange, looked like a piece of pipe with a large metal ring on  top that produces loud, long arcs - some people call it teslacoil ... xDD

Over the years I builded nearly any kind of TC, startet with an regular SGTC, VTTC, SSTC, OLTC, DRSSTC (I+II) and now I´m currently building my first QCW-DRSSTC !  But of course also just started with the little Ignition coils- flybacks NE555 circuits and so on, just step after step. Some times the circuits won´t work and that made me very unhappy but if they do it has allway been the greatest !

Longe time I looked for a place where the people just do the same things, where I can ask my questions and also may give answers to others - so this Forum makes a good impression to me  :D

I wish you an nice day !

Andi

Some how I missed this thread when I registered. Better late than never!

My name is Steve White. I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I am 66 years old. I am a retired electrical engineer with a MSEE (Master of Science in Electrical Engineering) degree. My working life has been in the aerospace industry.  My primary area of work involved the design and implementation of communications equipment for HF, UHF, VHF, and SATCOM. I was mostly concerned with the implementation of RF modems using real-time DSP software and hardware. I also spent some time designing infrared systems.

High voltage is one of many hobbies that I have including astronomy, cars, motorcycles, machining, computers, and hiking. I have my own metal lathe, turret mill, and metal-cutting band saw. They are all manual, not CNC.

I built my first tesla coil, a small VTTC, when I was 16. I have currently built:

1. A small 6L6-based VTTC putting out 0.5" discharges
2. A 8.6" pig-powered RSGTC drawing 6.5 KVA putting out 9-foot streamers
3. An 833A-based VTTC putting out 20 inch streamers in interrupter mode
4. A 20-stage Marx generator capable of 12" sparks
5. A pulsed power generator for coin shrinking, can crushing, and disk launching

My current project is a disk launcher attachment for my pulsed power generator. After that my next project will be a large Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier.

I came here primarily because 4hv.org is broken or at least the attachment functions are broken.

Just created an account yesterday, so here's my (David Knierim) intro:

So wonderful finding a forum restricted to real science!  A huge "thank you" to moderators!  The only other forum I've posted to is the Soap_Bubble_Wiki.  (That's another fun hubby.)  I'm just a 62 year old kid :)  My passion is getting kids interested in science - where my volunteering time is focused.

A few of my larger projects:
Coin shrinker - my first high-power project.  Played with launching aluminum disks too.
Synchronous rotary spark gap Tesla coil, 3kW.  (Initially used array of 48 TRIACs instead of spark gap - lasted for 3 or 4 sparks.)
Continuous single-resonant 2.5kW coil using two separate H-Bridges from two isolated 120V line cords, transformed to 2kV, then added.  Makes short thick arcs (~40cm) that work really well for coloring with metal-salt-solution breakout points and for making thin steel and aluminum wire into sparklers.
DRSSTC using 40 TO247 IGBTs (10 parallel for each switch), 2600A peak current (should handle 3500A later), 300V bus for now (450V in the future - only brief tests there), 3kW average (10kW eventually).  Barely running in time for showing 9 days ago at our local Maker Faire.  I've designed and built all circuitry, except for a last-minute MIDI interpreter kit to add live keyboard music.
With my son Abe, a supersonic ping pong ball launcher.  We now have the Guinness record, making holes through 3/4" plywood.
440kV Marx generator that fires up to 120 times per second.  Plays tunes at a very-low register.  6kW average input power.
Magnetic levitation, both AC induction of aluminum plates and permanent magnet levitation of spinning tops (7" float height - perhaps a record).

I spend as much or more time with smaller projects suitable to bring to kid's functions, such as an AC-induction penny launcher/sorter, showing that newer pennies with zinc inside don't conduct as well, so don't go as high.

For work, I'm an engineer at Xerox.  It's a blessing to get paid to have fun designing and inventing!

Joined here to both learn and hopefully contribute information too.  Thank you to Mads Barnkob for pointing me to the coupling factor etc. calculator.  Would have saved me writing my own if I'd known about that a year ago.  Been enjoying learning about vacuum potting too.

My youtube channel is "davekni":  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFic36uGWH-Rfsorg4TQhSQ
I've posted videos of several of my newer projects there.  All my uploaded content is of my science projects.

Hello,
My name is Mark i'm from Czech Republic, i am 20 years old and my dream is to build a large DRSSTC to produce 4m+ streamers. I'm pretty much a beginner in electronics but a fast learner ;) :D I've been into electronics for a year now all thanks to cool projects like Tesla coils, Marxs Generators, Coil Guns etc... It's fun for me to do high voltage / high current projects, it's always interesting and educating :D I'm studying Czech Technical University in Prague although i'm more focused on building my tesla coil instead of studying :D Right now i'm developing my first DRSSTC, it's a TO247 IGBT full bridge FGY75N60, the coil is about 60cm tall and once i'll get a 1 meter streamer out of it i will start building my DRSSTC II which will be my large IGBT brick DRSSTC. I'm really thankfull to youtubers like ElectroBOOM, GreatScott and people like Mads, Fabricio Franzoli and Kizmox for sharing their Tesla Coils on Youtube, thanks to you guys i'm interested in electronics even more and i think it's a privilege to understand how DRSSTC works, so.. Thank you! :)

Greetings earthlings, my name is Courtney but everyone calls me Cosmo. I'm male 39 from southern California. I'm addicted to the wonderful smell of ozone. I've been building coils for 10 years or so. Mostly SGTCs and a couple of SSTCs and I recently bit of more than I can chew. I decided go balls out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and make a DRSSTC. For a while I've followed the work of many like the Steve's (Ward n  Conner) and more recently Mads n loneoceans... I went with an 8in form with 29awg. It's around 2140ish turns and I'm driving 1mbi600px-140 bricks in a half bridge. My first DRSSTC I try driving bricks (stupid I know) but I got a "signal generator assisted" first light but I need to figure out this feedback phenomenon before I blow these bricks up! ಠ_ಠ

Mahdi and Babass, I look forward to see your projects and how we can help you succeed.

Mark and Courtney, you have come to the right place. Taking on a DRSSTC is quite a mouthful if it includes learning all the basic high frequency high voltage stuff as well, but we are all at your service. I look forward to see you present your projects in details with pictures and asking to good questions about how stuff works!

Welcome all to HVF!

I do like fixing stuff around the house and for friends and family however, saves a bit of landfill.

Hi, I'm Steve from the UK - a semi-retired electronic/software engineer and a long-time reader of 4hv. I decided to join HVF after reading through the "Transformer (ferrite core)" section, where (as a flyback enthusiast) I found many relevant discussions.

I'm current resurrecting a MOSFET ignition coil driver I used in the 90s - updating it with an IGBT and a better clamp. Will post the circuit if it turns out to be any good.

Nick from the UK here - I just checked "the other place" after a long time away to find it moribund, so ended up here!

My degree is in EE and physics, but I only briefly worked as a design engineer before moving into the finance industry, firstly by doing security, then running a financial software house, and latterly overseas in very hot countries.

I've always maintained a decent lab at home in the UK, and have just rebuilt it (it was in an old mid-Victorian building, and the floor collapsed) - there's a bit about the old setup and some of my HV-related projects on "the other place". We did a few of the UK Teslathons and similar stuff, but not for a long time.

Howdy Yall!

My name is Mike and I'm from Texas. I've always had a fascination with electricity and have built a few induction heating prototypes for loosening stuck bolts, case hardening head bolts, and heat treating exhaust valves. About a decade ago, I built a spark-gap tesla coil from patent drawings and that got me set on a path. Recently, I've been working to build a higher-power induction heater capable of smelting and zone-refining. My degree is in architecture, and I am a year and half from obtaining my license. I love finding new ways to bring technology into my work, and I'm excited to see all of the amazing work members here have done!

Cheers,

Mike

Hello everyone. I'm a retired electrical and mechanical engineer in North Carolina. I have a machine shop and electronics lab at home and love to build all things electrical and mechanical. I haven't had a chance to do too much while building a career and family but nowadays I homeschool my high-school age son who also loves to tinker. I came across this sight because I started doing research into an induction heater. My son takes machining classes at the local community college and his instructor was trying to find an alternate way of heating up his CNC tool holders, rather than purchasing a very expensive induction heating system from the manufacturer (when the tool holders are heated, the hole in the tip expands, the tool bit is placed in and the holder cools down to shrink-fit the part in place).  Anyway, that's how I came here and I'm sure I'll find some very useful information.

But now that I've perused the sight a bit I see a lot more interesting topics I'd like to delve into later. I look forward to chatting with y'all and hope I can be of help to some.

I've finally started taking intro EE classes in college, and I'm starting to understand enough about coils to actually try building them. I built a Slayer-Exciter that got a 2cm spark, but I'd like to eventually build a musical DRSSTC.

The latest one being the sstc 3 from kaizer site itself. And i have opened 2 threads regarding the same out of which one is completely resolved . I had passion for this field for a long time but due to lack of theory knowledge in this field I get stuck many a times and thats when I need this forum's members help. Hello - my name is Rob. I've been designing custom analog bipolar and CMOS integrated circuits for 28 years. I've done chips for everything from military to toy trains to medical equipment. DC to GHz. I now live in Montana (USA) and work as a consultant.

The high voltage world is a total departure for me. None of my chips have ever exceed 500 mW. Most are less than 1 mW.  I have very little experience with power electronics like IGBTs or even discrete components.

Four years ago my son, who was 13 at the time, saw Electroboom's Tesla Coil and wanted to build his own. While we could duplicate Medhi's poor results, we wanted more. My son actually gave a lot of good ideas that advanced us to where  we got much stronger arcs but had a problem blowing up transistors.  As an aside, it turns out that you can be a very well respected electrical engineer for nearly thirty years, but if you smoke up the house *just once* your wife makes you work with a fire extinguisher by your side. I tell her I now put fuses in all power lines, but she is still tense when I'm working on this.

Covid-19 has given me time to resurrect the project. Although I do now have a single transistor design that can produce 10" arcs reliably, I still blow a lot up trying to improve the performance. I wish I learned about TVS diodes before last week and saved a lot of transistors...

Welcome Prabhat
as an engineer hopeful you have much to learn
you learn from your own mistakes ie working out what went wrong and doing it again with that mistake fixed and now looking for the next one.
you do learn a little from others mistakes, but your own are where the most learning comes from
Go out and experiment if you do not understand why it went wrong document fully and put it up here on this site, --the brains trust is sure to help

enjoy

Hello all, well I just read thru all the "Welcome new members " posts and have now understood why 4hv hasn't
replied to my registration, a few of them are here!! 8) To start with, I am 56 yo service tech for Phenix Technologies in Maryland. We manufacture High Voltage, High Current, High Power test equipment and components. Started learning about electronics about 9 yrs old, spent a lot of time at Radio Shack and reading their books, then more formal study in high school. Went into the military and got more formal study at TOFTOY
at Redstone Arsenal Huntsville, AL. My MOS was 27E, TOW/Dragon missile guidance technician. After military
I went to College and got my Associate Degree in electronics. My passion is HV and working on a frankenstein
SSTC that is mix of Steve Wards SSTC-5 and a few others. As I mentioned I am a service tech, I travel a great
deal around the world, and COVID has put that to a halt. So lots of time to get frankenstein spitting lots of PD  ;D. I hope to learn more from you guys and contribute to this forum. It's great to be here!

Hi Rowdy and welcome to HVF!

Great resume and I hope you will feel welcome and get all the help you need, looking forward to see a project thread about your SSTC.

Phenix seems to be in a great variance of fields, any specific you work in as service technician?

I would like one of these, if you happen to have one at work that is just collecting dust and is to be thrown out :D https://www.phenixtech.com/Files/Admin/PDF/40302_Ultra_HV_DC_Test_Systems.pdf

Hey Mads, LOL no we do not have one of those in the scrap pile, customers tend to have those fixed. Lots of money in one of those units. Actually I service and calibrate everything we make.

I'm Rob Kellner (you'll see my full name in my documentation if I post projects/schematics), but online prefer Morvandium.  I started taking apart electronics  around age 5.  My last formal education in electronics was 20 years ago.  I'm a bit of a jack of all trades/renaissance man -- I enjoy learning to solve new problems far more than perfecting my skills solving variations of the same problem.

A couple years ago I started Lichtenberg wood burning, and was disturbed by the horribly unsafe practices/equipment setups most burners used -- including stories of deaths.  That led me to building safer equipment, including a high voltage power supply (+2kVAC/-2kVAC/+2kVDC/-2kVDC outputs).

Many burners don't understand basic concepts of electricity, and couldn't explain, in physics terms, WHY they did what they did.  I looked to other high voltage communities for the theory/design -- something I enjoy even more than constructing a project.  I realized, while revising my power supply design (when adding the -4kV/4kV/ -8kVDC/8kVDC/ -12kVDC/12kvDC rails), a Tesla coil wasn't TOO much more work.  That led me here.

I enjoy the challenge of building using primarily scrapped or used parts, and the occasional liquidation/discontinued parts sale--though not to the point of idiocy or sacrificing safety.  I prefer durable, versatile and robust equipment.  Before I build a coil, I'm planning a variable-speed RSG, for use with both Lichtenberg wood burning (to make various rate pulsed DC to study effects on wood burn patterns), and later on for a TC.  I'm still deciding which approach I'll take for a tank capacitor/MMC, but realizing I might have to put some real money in there.  Since the TC will be more demanding on the tank, that's what I'll design for.

When it comes to SSTCs, I appreciate the circuitry and design far more than construction.  I do love poring over the schematics and love the near-perfect resonance they can achieve.  There's something primal about a cracking rotary spark gap that I enjoy, like a hammer on hot iron.  In my mind, SSTCs are to RSGTCs what giraffes are to rhinoceroses.  ;D

I also program in several languages and have an education in computer science, though I'm a bit rusty.  I love understanding things through the lens of physics, though I have to admit, as I was teaching myself about the physics of inductors and transformers, I realized I don't seem to learn as fast as I did 20 years ago.  I think I might be getting old, lol.

I've also done residential electrical and a little home automation work.  I'm an avid fan of quality documentation--I have a degree in English--though sometimes I have trouble staying concise.  See the last 6 paragraphs as an example.

Greetings all!

I'm an electrical & electronic engineering and computer science student from the UK. I have been fascinated with electronics/engineering and creating things from a very early age, and started my high voltage endeavors in 2013 by building Jacobs ladders and Tesla coils. Since then I've spent the vast majority of my free time on all kinds of project's including lasers, hydrogen generators, flyback drivers, Marx generators, high current metal melting transformers, Fusor's, an electric foundry and have built 3 Tesla coils to date. In recent years, I have gravitates a lot more towards microprocessors, digital systems and both high and low level programming. A lot of my projects these days revolve around Arduino's, embedded systems and servers. I suppose my career path right now is headed towards processor micro-architecture and design, as I am currently on my second of three internships with Arm and have always had a deep interest in computer engineering. However, I will definitely continue my interest in power electronics in my spare time; I am currently building my first DRSSTC right now  ;). I knew our HV community was small, so I am thrilled to see a new forum bursting with activity all these years later with more and more people getting into the subject!  :)

I document most of my projects on my YouTube and my blog linked here, but I haven't had time yet to update them with some of my older and my most recent experiments:

Hello,  My name is Chris Law and I live in Fort Wayne Indiana, USA.  I am a power sports tech that pretends to be an electrical engineer on the weekends.  I have been interested in electricity  from a young age but just started building Tesla coils about 7 years ago.  I am building my first pair of DRSSTC's and am close to finishing them but could use some advice on the controllers.  That is what has brought me to this forum.  I have built a spark gap coil that Make Magazine had plans for on their web site called "The Six Pack Tesla Coil", it turned out well but not a very complicated build.  I have also built some simple circuit boards and a 3D printer from a kit, the See Me CNC's Rostock Max V2.  The controller circuit for the DRSSTC is far more complicated than anything I have built and will be posting to ask a few questions about it.

Hello, I'm Eirik, also known as uzzors2k online. I've been working on high voltage and electronics projects for the last fifteen years, but I was definitely most active for the first five. I started small with a 555 powered flyback transformer driver, and built up from there. Eventually constructing a DRSSTC, induction heater, can crusher, high speed arc-flash photography setup, underwater ROV, and several x-ray machines. I have a personal website I've tried to keep up to date which documents most of my projects (see my signature). This forum seems like a lively community, and I hope to contribute to it.

Greetings,

Used to be on the 4hv forums when it was really active until hobby interests shifted and I had less time to ionize air and make silicone violently explode. That is until a few weeks ago when I was reminded of great scotts project of taking an ebay slayer oscilator and turning it into a proper sstc. That piqued my interest again especialy once I watched a different video where they pointed out that the circuit begins to oscilate at 6v.

With that in mind I dug out my old small coil to test out the slayer circuit in hopes to use it as a resonant frequency meter and then back checking it against deep fried neons calculator, then further back checking it against java tc and mads calculators. This got me thinking I should try and do a progressive complexity sstc project, where I start with the limited performance of a slayer then slowly add parts and change configurations until I come up with as large of arcs as I can get from 24VDC @ 10A. Also in hopes of finally incorperating in a psoc for wider and more precise measuring and control. Especially after I remembered see the work you guys had done on the UDB.

Hi all ,
I'm really enjoying all of the really cool innovations. I'm relatively new to the micro electronics world but I'm learning  I've built several drsstc coils as well as am attempting qcw  . Am having trouble with buck converter right now as I have no scope due to circumstances! I have some ideas but its gonna take some of you smart guys to implement. I'm really impressed with the sharing of info . Was wondering is it possible to create qcw ramp with ic s instead of programming? I think its possible and maybe a good challenge for some of the seniors.
Ps after alot if dead silicon I've got some good soldering skills.

Hi all,

My name is Daniel and I am from Denmark.

I have had a decade or so brake from building Tesla Coils, I bought a house, got me a wife and had two kids instead ;D

I’m an educated Toolmaker, and I am currently working as an 5 axis CNC programmer using a software called Hypermill, and do a little programming of custom macros when needed in the production.

I’m building a workshop/hobby room at the moment, and the plan is to get the rest of my Tesla Coils and projects home again after many years of storage at my parents house. My wife can’t understand how anyone can collect so many things and parts as I have done in my 37 years on planet earth. I hope to get space for it all in the small workshop/hobby room, and will post some pictures when Diablo Tonnere(my big DRSSTC) is coming home again and is ready for a rebuild.

I will post a thing from time to time :)

Cheers,

Daniel Uhrenholt

Welcome back! It is a pleasure to see you here on HVF!

I also have wife and two kids now, but still managed to keep a good 50 sq.m. of work shop / laboratory, the only problem is always running short on time :)

Really looking forward to see your coils running again and your other projects, you should make a thread about building up your hobby room!

Hello all!

My name is Matt, from USA.

I am and automotive technician, but I have been interested in electronics since before elementary school! I have been playing with high voltage for about 15 years now. I have made many different Tesla coil's, from SGTCs, to DRSSTCs to VTTCs, and even an OLTC! I've made countless other high voltage projects such as fly back drivers etc. So far I have made about 100 videos for YouTube, some of them dating back to 13 years ago! (Username: triggerhappy77707)

I was very active on 4hv many years ago with the same alias, but now that it seems that it is defunct I am glad to find this website and see some similar names! I hope to be able to help others and contribute with posts of my own and help build the community!

Cheers, Matt

Hi everyone,

I am David from Switzerland. I am an embedded systems engineer for ultra low power devices.
Usually, I am thinking in microamperes. Now I would like to try something different by building a small DRSSTC.

As a start I chose to copy the oneTesla TS electronics from the data they show on their website.
I had no luck with this setup. Soft switching seems not to work as it should. Many blown IGBTs later, I am looking for help in this forum to find the problem - Thread coming soon ;).

Cheers

Thanks for the warm welcome, Mads! I am quite surprised that you still remember me, it must be nearly 10 years since 4hv! I certainly remember you though, I always read your posts on 4hv and I have kept up with your YouTube account and website, it's great to see that you are still doing awesome stuff!

Haha that faraday cage certainly was far from perfect and still very dangerous, but I felt safe *enough* with grounded metal mesh protecting my eyes and nether region though.

Anyway great to speak to you and to be part of another great forum! Thanks for the warm invitation and for helping the HV community in general. I wish you and your family a beautiful holidays!

My name is Patrik and I am from Slovakia. I have been into electronics since primary school, where we were experimenting with with my friends with stuff we found in the physics cabinet. Since then 5 years passed and I got into electronic. I realy love power electronics, amplifiers, vacuum tube stuff, power inverters and so on.
I have build a SSTC a year ago, but since it blew up twice I started to do a bigger research and I found this forum, so I started reading some of the posts, and decided, that I shold join. And so, here I am. I have learned a lot since the last SSTC attempt and I hope to find some help here, if I would not know how to move forward anymore.

I want to apologize for my poor English, but it is not my primary language. I will try my best however to write correctly.

Hello everyone!

My name is Will and I am mostly here out of curiosity. I just recently got into tesla coils, so my knowledge base is pretty limited. I joined this forum mostly to find out if one could use an insulated wire as a breakout point for a coil, that way they could have the actual discharge occur much farther away from the actual coil and prevent it from frying itself. I have never seen this done but I can't understand why it couldn't be done. Hopefully one of you can help me!
Title: Re: Welcome new members, come say hello and tell a little about yourself :)
Post by: davekni on February 14, 2021, 10:47:25 PM
Good question.  It can be done, but there are complications.  Even small SSTCs generate 50-100kV.  This requires thick insulation.  Larger DRSSTCs get up to 1MV where insulation thickness becomes impractical.

Second, even with insulation, there will be corona discharge.  Insulation still has capacitance.  At 30-300kHz of most coils, that capacitance conducts significant current.  The corona will degrade organic (rubber or plastic) insulation over time.  Also, if the point is to eliminate corona, a larger diameter breakout rod does about as well as the same diameter of insulation.

Still, insulation can block arcs forming.  At the end of the insulation (at the breakout point) where arcs do form, temperature gets high.  At least the end of the insulation needs to be ceramic or other high-temperature material.

Curiosity is great.  Have fun learning!  That is what we are all here to do.

I also would like to study a course on basics of electricity, then branch into Tesla's work with high voltage, pulsing DC,
spark gaps, resonance, etc. so I can learn to do this myself.
Does anyone have a good suggestion about an online course where I can begin advancing my knowledge in electricity?

Thank you.

Hey guys,
i'm Skeluroth from Germany! I repair old lab equipment mainly the from 80s and try to learn to learn some more complex analog circuitry from that. I have done a couple little projects with uC and computers but no rocket science really. My main interest are high voltage (preferably even high power :D) projects. For example I built a 12kVA power supply out of 8 MOTs with resonant caps that can do over a meter long plasma channels. Now I'm working on a 9,9kVA 3 phase variac supply to get me started on proper big stuff. I am thinking about a SGTC... but that will take a while. I will post videos of that when I'm finished on my YouTube channel.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Jhornel and I am from the Philippines but currently living in Japan.

I just became a member of the High Voltage Forum today.

I have been interested in Electronics and High Voltage since 2005 but just started building my first SSTC this year.

I am still a beginner with regards to SSTCs and beyond.

I hope to have good friends here and hope to learn a lot from everyone.

All the best

Hello, my name is Sebastian and I'm from New York. I'm a senior in highschool and am going to study Mechanical engineering (most likely) in college. I have been building and tinkering with electronics since I was a 6th grader, and give all credit to YouTube for learning everything, haha. I have built a couple small tesla coils, a small SGTC and some SSTC's, however I want to build a DRSSTC and need some guidance as to where I should start, hence me joining this forum.

Hi all,

I'm from California, and am currently working on further improving my 4-1000A VTTC while waiting for bleeder resistors for a larger doubler capacitor and a variac to soft start the filament supply for an 8890 I got for $40. I am quite interested in ramping VTTCs using non-mains methods for larger output.

Here's my YouTube:

HI i am ADAM from GB - Maintenance engineer for automation equipment been doing that for the past 14 years, but served my aprenticeship at a transformer company where I was doing winding and prototype coil work testing etc. I have been active mostly on FB high voltage groups but I will prob try to put some of my projects on here, might be interesting (or not) but hopefully so. I have been playing with high voltage and SGTCs since I was a kid, but only recently discovered the joy of VTTCs. Made a few magnifiers, and now playing with solid state drivers and designing some PCBs for them.  Hope to get some inspiration here and share my ideas if they are welcomed.

I have a youtube channel where I upload my antics. if I am allowed here is the link https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3uVeWj8-Wp0Q3qj_jjd_wg

Best greetings for all HV Community!
My name is Chris. I'm from Poland. I'm phisioterapist.
After ours I love to tinker in electronics, mainly with Tesla coils and stuff related with it...
I have some experience with making Tesla coils and power supply for them.
I did SGTC, SSTC, ZVS, Slayer-Kacher, Push Pull, E-Class, Flyback transformers which average power not exceeding 1kW.
My main goal at this moment is make DRSSTC driver of coursly with phase correction ZCS which be able to power medium and large coils.
This would be my main topic which I will be interested in and ask questions.

Hi everyone,

My name is Duane Bylund. I’m new to this forum but not new to Tesla coils and high voltage. I built my first Tesla coils back in 1971, a SG unit with a 2 kV luminous tube transformer, and a tube unit with one 811-A tube. Perhaps my most crowning acheivement was a SS base-driven coil that was published in the September, 1991 Radio Electronics magazine.

I graduated from college in 1977 with an Associates degree in Electronics Technology and promptly got a job at a large rocket motor manufacturing plant in Bacchus, Utah. I had that job for nearly 44 years and just recently retired. My main responsibilities were the love and care of high-energy X-ray machines, including one resotron (1.2 million volts, or MEV – similar to a Tesla coil), two betatrons (25 MEV), and several linatrons (Linear accellerators - 15 MEV, 9 MEV, 3 MEV, 2 MEV, and 1 MEV). I also maintained all kinds of chem lab equipment, including Inductively Coupled Plasma spectrometers, IR spectrometers, XRF spectrometers, etc. Other instruments included scale systems, CCTV video systems, mass spectrometer leak detectors, firing systems, data acquisition systems, etc. I feel very fortunate to have been able to work on some of the high-energy X-ray stuff because much of that technology is obsolete now and no longer used.

My main hobbies include collecting and studying 1920s superheterodyne radios, relic hunting historical sites with a metal detector, and studying Tesla coils. I haven’t done much with Tesla coils since 1991 and still use that old Radio Electronics SS driver as my main power source. I know I am obsolete, but I do want to learn a few new things, and hopefully I’ll be able to contribute once in a while.

Hello everyone,

My name is Mathieu Brand, born 1973 in the Netherlands. I live in Malaysia since 2016, and have been working most of my career in the semiconductor industry as a global fieldservice engineer, with expertise in molding, T&F and laser separation equipment. Tired of travelling settled 4 years ago for a less hectic life as teacher/trainer.
Hobbies have to satisfy my technical needs now, so I picked up drone building/flying, building demonstration material for STEM classes and during last year developed an interest  for tesla coils.  Started building the first DRSSTC after a small but feisty SSTC.
Hopefully my variac will arrive soon, so the DRSSTC can see first light without releasing as much magic smoke as the the first coil  :)
Pretty sure that by that time the questions will arrive as well, one never stops learning.

Stay safe!

Mathieu,

Welcome to the forum! I too am interested in studying the inner workings of the DRSSTC. I'm an old man now, so I am leaning towards just buying one fully assembled rather than building it myself. I have always loved sparks! You be safe too!

Greetings All,

My name is Flavio, from Sydney, Australia.

I have long held interests in electronics, lasers and high voltage since a young lad, and finally last year I embarked on building a small Tesla coil, and since working on several other projects. My full time job is in the medical industry as a service engineering on diagnostic imaging instruments for Ophthalmology.

My project coil started out more as an experiment to gain experience with material selection, winding secondaries and to see if even could get something working.

As the project evolved, it became a serious little piece of kit.
Input to the coil is 130W (6kV/30mA NST). The secondary is 30mm x 132mm. The top load measures: 152mm x 38.64 with a calculated capacitance of 6.61pF

The coil operates at 1.36MHz resonant frequency (with simulated streamer).

Additional details on this project on my website as well as my High-Frequency Solid State coil, and many other projects.

Hello Duane,

Thank you, and for your kind feedback  :)

You certainly have some great experience with various technologies and equipment... Now that you mention about the Radio Electronics Magazine, wow this is a blast from the past. I have a hard copy of this magazine that i purchased just to read about the Tesla Coil. This was designed around circuit similar to a flyback and fed the secondary coil (wound on the yellow bucket).

For those whom may not have ever seen the article, I have just found a archive that is available to read:

https://archive.org/details/radio_electronics_1991-09/mode/2up (https://archive.org/details/radio_electronics_1991-09/mode/2up)

In 1991, I was 16, still in high school and constantly found in the school library getting hold of any texts and books on Lasers and High-Voltage. I came across this article with interest, and no doubt a solid-state coil of this nature at the time was pretty much cutting-edge.

Love to chat more about your experiences and stories :)

Flavio, thank you for the kind words about the Radio-Electronics article!

I vaguely remember a large industrial laser that my place of employment had in the late 1970s. This was a 200-watt unit that was some 15 feet long. I believe it was CO2. The beam would go into a special interlocked and reinforced room where it would reflect off a water-cooled first-surface mirror into a small sample of rocket propellant. The only other thing I remember about it is the Eimac 3-500Z tubes inside the head. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to work on it.

Hello! I am Jack, just registered after quite a bit of not understanding the layout, perhaps because I was trained in Electronics when solid state was in it's infancy.

Later, following that, I earned degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, those also from long ago. Meanwhile the technical world passed me by as surviving became more important than keeping technically current.

As a young man, teenager, money being "tight" and my "fast car interests" prevailed, I became quite proficient in most skilled work: welding, hydraulic, mechanics and the like.

I built my first Tesla Coil while a sophomore in high school, but could not enter it in the Science Fair since I had been placed in accelerated science classes instead of General Science; I gave it to my friend, who entered it, and took first place! The device used an old power transformer I scrounged from the family's discarded Atwater-Kent radio, 1200 plate volts winding, and two 811-A Triodes in parallel. I believe the article describing building it came from one of the then-popular magazines like Popular Mechanics. The bug had bitten me!

I went on to build a number of high-voltage devices, the apex of which was a working X-Ray machine using a Barium PlatinoCyanide fluorescent screen! That thing examined numerous hands, the family cat and canary-bird, and proved to family and friends: the kid was nuts!

Hi there!

I'm Corey, and I am currently a university student in California, USA. I am actually a math major and not an engineering major, but I still like to do engineering-type projects. Right now I am currently trying to build my first tesla coil for a project for one of my classes. I am very much still learning as I go, but many threads on this forum have been extremely helpful in learning all that I need to know, so thank you. I don't have any links to add right now, but after I finish my coil, I will definitely be publishing something.

Hi im Riley,
I'm from Australia and I have been doing basic low voltage electronics for a while and when I turned 14 I found the realm of high voltage with a MOT and have started experimenting with mini tesla coils and have even started off on a Dual MOT SGTC but I really like DRSSTC and have tried to build a full bridge for a mini integrated sstc that I got, but it failed and I also got another tesla coil that I killed and need help trying to fix. Here's my YouTube channel where I post what im working on been mostly tesla coils.

OMG, Did i just discover how this works? (yes... is hard for me to understand how forum works since this is my first forum ever  :-\ )

Hi to you all!
I'm Chloe, i'm from Italy and i'm 21.
I'm there to know new people and to get help (maybe a lot of help) understanding stuff.
My main dream was about 11 years ago... since the movie "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" came out in Italy i always wanted to make a Tesla Coil like the ones in the film (maybe a bit smaller :P ).
So since i was 10, i started doing a lot of Tesla Coils mainly SGTC and RSGTC ones.
But my biggest dreams were to make one musical tesla coil. Something with more than 1 Meter of spark in air and some sweet music comeing out of it.
I always wanted to do something like this and at the age of 14-15yo i started doing my stuff. I did my first full bridge, my first gdt, my first drivers (buyed a 2.7 Rev. C Universal Driver after a pretty bad made 2.5 Rev. A), my first 0.2mm secondary (was hard as fuc* back then, now it was easy to wind even a 0.1mm secondary for a really small SGTC this morning haha) and i did all my enclosures etc.

But at he end. Even after an oscilloscope, a variac, and every tool i needed and even not needed.
I never had the bravery to test that out since i didnt know what i was doing AT ALL and i was just following friends etc and i was super scared of it back then (i didnt know how to deal with such long sparks.. as 1+ Mt since i always did 30-40cm with my SGTC and RSGTC ones till some days ago that i did 60-80cm). At that point i just loosed interest in it (not really.. i was just depressed for traumas and life problems of abus*s rap*s etc etc.. life was really hard with me...).

And now, after 11 years, i had the courage to take my life back. I got in touch with some persons out there.
And after some hard times in the real wold.. and some delusions over all.. i just decided to fully commit and do this freacking DRSSTC!
For once understanding the most i can out of it too!

So now there i am looking to take it all the way and do my first MIDI DRSSTC.

I need help because i don't know ANY of it when it comes to DRSSTC, just some basic stuff. But i learn extra fast (i'm pretty much an Indigo person i guess on this thing..) and i'm really smart if i really focus and commit on something!

This said.
Thx to everyone who is gonna help me out, and i'm sowwy if my english suc*s... But i'm from Italy so i try my best over there..
Love You All 💗✌🏻🏳️‍🌈

Welcome!  Since you are interested in learning, I suggest learning an analog circuit simulator.  There are free online versions and free ones to run locally on your computer.  My favorite is LTSpice.  Testing circuits in simulations allows much more experimentation without burning out real parts.  Any voltage or current can be plotted.  Easier than connecting real scope probes.  Then, when you construct a real circuit and probe it, you can compare measured waveforms with simulated ones.  That helps with figuring out issues with real circuit (such as excess wire inductance that isn't in the simulated circuit).  Simulation is not a requirement to make a working DRSSTC.  We can help interpret issues from scope traces.  You will learn more about electronics, however, if you run your own simulations.

If you haven't tried it yet, use JavaTC to model your coil.  It is a great tool to predict inductances, coupling factor, etc.  Do watch parameter units and radius/diameter.  JavaTC inputs are a mix of diameters and radii, which can lead to mistakes.

Of course, use proper safety precautions.  DRSSTC is generally less hazardous than SGTC or RSGTC, but still dangerous.

Oh! I can't believe I missed this thread!

Hello everyone.
I'm Dominik. I'm from Poland. I'am 28 yr. old. I run small machining and welding enterprise. I was interested in electronics since my early years. I actually done my first HV device when I was 8. I experimented with relay based oscillator, and came up on idea to switch small resin encapsulated transformer with it. Hopefully secondary had no breakdown, and I observed 1-2mm sparks :) I built my first SGTC when I was 15. Since that i built numerous tesla coils and hv circuits. During studies, and after I dropped out them due to health reasons my hv-related interests shifted to torwards pulsed power, nanosecond pulse generators, and vacuum devices powered with them. Recently I launched website devoted to my projects: https://huntergroundmind.wordpress.com/ .I want to share with You my ideas, and gain new knowledge from discussion with You :)

My name's Jan, I am a 17 year old boy from Austria. All my life I have been interested in various areas of science.
I have built a few coils before, but they were usually low-powered and tiny.
Right now I am building an SSTC based on Steve Ward's Mini SSTC and Kaizer's SSTC III. I love reading and being alone, however, I treasure long conversations with fellow hobbyists, scientists, and engineers.

Hello All, Robert from Central Indiana - my HV intro was Navy fire control radars and electronics decades ago. I'm currently an electrical project engineer (stress project) for a container company.

This hobby started with an internet surf on, drum roll, Info Unlimited and I ended up with their basic BTC-30 Tesla coil. Had a bit of assembly and tuning fun with that, and got her to sing pretty good without killing the NST or the cap. Victory and totally addictive, learned a lot. On we go! I'm currently in the learning/relearning phase, finding and reading books, relearning complex Impedance (Z to Y, etc.) so I can better understand results. I don't like magic, I like to know why : )
I am currently building with a friend's assist, the Info Unlimited 5' Jacob's Ladder from mostly scratch. No big deal for the electronics - a DRSSTC / McCauley based full bridge and a pretty simple low side controller circuit. The transformer is the difficult part, but I've managed a method that has only created one evil red Slinky of wasted magnet wire and is working great now. Doing transformers by hand is patient work....

I was an avid motorcyclist until the advent of modern attention-deficit driving and emotions expressed with a vehicle, I fly high powered rockets, and read myself blind.

I work a lot but as a senior electronics tech getting to do engineering, the difficulty and the joy is max!

Cheers / Robert

Hello everybody, I learned about "Tesla coil" from my friend's google-ing page. So I found a common slayer-exciter to build a tiny one. Then it lighted a CCFL successfully. I feel happy to step into this new world. A few years later I try to make a little SGTC from a mosquito swatter. But I think that is just a pulse spark generator... So I get a ZVS oscillator and high voltage capacitor to assemble a bigger one. I think it works, but it's noisy. So now I am trying a single MOSFET classE SSTC from Mr. Steve Ward.

I am not good at speaking english.. sorry for that

Thanks Mads, as a huge styropyro fan i feel like it's pretty important to document the build process of my coils, as it helps people who are not into the niche hobby of tesla coiling and somehow found my videos start to understand what the heck a tesla coil is and how it works. also it gives me an excuse to make sick build montages with dubstep music lol

Also btw where should i go on the forum to discuss induction heating?

Hi!

I've just joined here & thought I should say hi.

I'm Kristen, out of Waltham Massachusetts. I haven't worked much with really high voltage - primarily under 15kV - but I have a new project that will need substantially higher voltages, so I thought joining here might be useful.

As a hobby, I have an ultra-high vacuum system, and do thin film experiments using sputtering and similar techniques. I'd really like to do ion implantation, so I am just putting my toes in the water with respect to designing & building a small linac (~1 meter long RF drift tube). This will be a pulse-mode, not continuous wave linac, so I am learning about capacitor banks and pulse-forming networks.

If anyone is interested, I can post some photos when I have something tangible to show.

Regards,
Kristen

Hi  :)

I’m Akasha.  I’ve been building Tesla coils for about 20 years now, starting with classic SGC, then John Freau's design with 2 x Svetlana 572 tubes and MOT's.  At the time I knew little about magnetics or RF design (Dunning-Kruger effect :D) so that was quite an apprenticeship.

On and off over the last ten years, I've worked through learning stages from a simple class D design with external drive signal to more sophisticated designs with secondary feedback and finally, with primary current feedback. I completed a bit of undergrad academic study in EE, just to make life more interesting.

I followed and built the Steve Ward design that was the 2009 (?) precursor to UD2.7 as it is now, and have stayed aware of that circuit as it has evolved.  I fried plenty of driver chips in my time before I understood proper RF design and ground planes.

Very pleasing to see how widely it is being used, well over a decade since the early version.

Last year I finished a full bridge DRSSTC with pleasing results.   I put it aside after intentionally testing the IGBT’s in the H bridge to destruction.  The new version will have a half-bridge but of much tougher devices.  Let's see how they perform first.

I enjoy RF design, power electronics theory, materials science and making robust designs. I love this forum and the space it offers to aficionados of all levels and hope to contribute what I can.

I'm very familiar with your work, Mads, and your published design for an H bridge that you made available on the internet for a few years ( I think you only took it down recently0 was one that I followed.    I also acknowledge the very helpful open-source info that LoneOceans has put out there, and going right back to the mid 2000's, Steve Ward's work.

My current focus is to make a few changes to my inverter, settling down for a max output power of 400A, and putting measures in place to make the unit robust and reliable, neatly encased and easily moved around in a small flight case.  I'm very happy with the inverter which only weighs a few pounds.  My apartment dimensions are comfortable enough but there's only enough room for around 1 metre of sound and light show from the antinode of the secondary coil.

I do like a waveform on a 'scope.  This was the moment when I first saw the modulation envelope of my DRSSTC in tune-up and knew that everything was aok.

Hello,
I joined this forum in September but I forgot to post an introduction. My name is Sean (Dru is a nickname), 20yr old from Ipswich, Massachusetts. Graduated hs at Exeter last spring and have been working with electronics for a couple years now. I built my first Tesla coil in mid 2021, before that I was mostly focused on lasers. I enjoy working on a variety of projects simultaneously, often with the end goal of synthesizing them. I've been coding for a while as well, working on AI and embedded software for the coils. I'm also very passionate about math, through high school I advanced well into university level mathematics, which has proven a great help in designing and understanding circuits. Mostly studying complex analysis and topology right now, some abstract algebra too. Currently electronics stuff is a hobby, I do plan on pursuing it in college though. I've enjoyed seeing all the interesting projects on here since I joined!

Welcome to the forum!

Nice coil!
1st impressions looked kinda wonky with 'skinny sec' and very big topload.

It was a tesla magnifier

It produced hot 26 foot sparks {point to point} thanks to its 14 gage secondary wire. I miss it already. This Winter I will be looking into its replacement. I have been building coils since 1992 in Oklahoma on a 5 acre homestead.

Hi guys,
I'm Felix, 17 years old and I live in southern Germany. I've been doing high voltage since new year 2020 and after doing all the "classics" like flybacks, MOTs, voltage doublers, etc. I started building my first SGTC earlier this year. After then building a small SSTC based on a very simple design from LabCoats, I dug into the DRSSTC-world. The DRSSTC design guide helped me a lot so far but there are still some questions. These questions brought me here and I hope I find some answers :)

Cheerio ;)

Hi All!
I'm an old guy that will never grow up. I started building HV stuff when I was a kid and built my first spark gap coil in the early 70s... my mom was not happy with me after I got zapped unconscious in my bed room. DIY in my day was building my capacitors with glass plates and aluminum foil. My first VTTC I used an 813 transmitting tube along with stuff from Fair Radio Sales.... was a cool mail order company in Lima Ohio where I could get things to my home in Phoenix Arizona. I played with old gas engines and HAM radio in highschool having access to a 1KW Collins transmitter. Always a go getter I did a double major of electrical and mechanical engineering. I went into business for myself in 1986 when the firm I was working at sold off the machine shop. April 1 I started my job shop biz! I have worked on so many different things in different areas of invention and production over these years and many times in the background sub contracted with automotive, communication, medical and have helped bring new ideas into the world... even had two of my projects orbit the globe in space.
In the last number of years I literally changed the tattoo industry with my new ideas to make the biz better and continue to do so today. In my CNC shop I have seven three axis machining centers plus
two 6 axis multifunction Tsugami lathes, along with fiber and CO2 lasers, SLA and FDM printers.
So I am a weird guy that can make just about anything.
Some years ago I started working on my " Thermionic Emitter," a large VTTC using a 4PR1000A pulse tetrode along with a lethal dose DC Cap bank at a ridiculous high voltage! Kinda put it on the back burner while I was working on the screen biasing due to a big contract... need to get back on it.
So, I keep reading and researching the developments in SSTC, DRSSTC and the QCW and now think I want to play! This looks like the place!!

Hello everyone I'm Jim with very likely a cliche introduction. I'm new around here but quite the "older" veteran in the wonderful world of electronics.

I've long had an interest in Tesla and his work (many others as well but...Nikola Tesla was one very interesting man, his work pioneering) and my current focus has turned towards the pancake coil.

I love reading and exploring old literature and technologies and I am definitely a hands on builder, tinkerer, and explorer. Many of my passions have been sitting on a shelf as my wife and I raised the children but now we have reached a place where the last will enter her junior year of college (chemistry major) and I'm about to play again. I have a pretty cool collection of devices and surplus parts, discrete components, and test gear. Recently I had the great fortune to inherit some HV capacitors, all of them are from the Condenser Products Corp. that were going to be "discarded" otherwise. Which, of course to my wife's dismay, I simply could not let happen.  ;D

I scored on:

Ancient but well kept, I wonder what their ESR's measure?

Professionally I am a Controls Engineer (I used to couldn't say it, but now I are one) which surely betrays a trait of "pack-ratting" all manners of geek looking stuff that very few people recognize let alone understand or have interests in. That of course, again much to the irritation of my gentler half, is OK with me. I will provide a good and stable environment for wayward devices of many types and test equipment, Ham Radio gear, and old motorcycle parts too....the list is looooong.

I intend on continuing my explorations of impulse driven, spark gap and solid state, and broad banded excitation of resonant circuits and masses. One of my favorite "parlor tricks" has been a very interesting wireless electrolysis that I saw and experimented with on other forums in another life.

Below is a shot of 96 LED's in series running on single wire RF input, very little input power,  and just a few hundred volts...still, it's great fun (occasional, though not too frequent, RF burns aside)

Single wire broadband excitation of large LED loops...just for fun.

Don't do this at home boys and girls, I'm a licensed professional.

In any case, Hello again!....I'll be reading and looking at what you all have posted here...for now.

Best regards,

JT

My name is Matthew, I finished an associates degree about 3 years ago and have been working as a computer tech at a school district since then.
I've been buying tools here and there, starting a few hobbies.

I do a bit of graphic designing, I've gotten a decent handle on 3d printing/3d modeling and have started a bit of blacksmithing. My endless curiosity has led me here as well.

I intend on going back to college at some point, but at the moment I'm getting certified for stuff here and there.

Hello everyone.

I used to frequent 4hv many years ago. Not sure what has happened there, but it seems quite dead now? Found this forum today and it seems quite lively, and I am glad to be here.

I got into HV stuff as a (probably too young) teen. I built a (terrible) SG Tesla Coil when I was 12 or 13 and then built a far nicer VTTC when I was 16 based on Steve's single 833A compact design. Said VTTC is currently in parts in a box in my shed, unused in about a decade now. But for some reason (probably because of being employed and having money now), I find myself in the scene again. My first project — sort of a litmus test to see how serious I am about getting into this again — is to rebuild my old VTTC into a presentable unit rather than the jury-rigged nonsense I ran with years back. After that I have some crazy idea to build a 5 or 10 kW VTTC from a transmitting triode. It's probably crazy, but aren't we all here?

My other hobby that might interest some people here is about all nuclear things. It currently looks at nuclear weapons design, focussing on the idea that a British nuclear device - codenamed Super Octopus - greatly interested the US and was extensively used in US nuclear weapons. I am currently writing a history paper on the topic and hope to get it published in a journal and am currently at the stage of "do I look for more info or run with what I have?". Hard choices. I also have a blog on it. I don't mind discussing the topic with those who are interested. I've looked at other nuclear topics as well and my thesis for my (unfinished) degree was looking at manufacturing challenges in advanced nuclear power.

I'll try dig up my old VTTC photos tomorrow.

Welcome Download!

I seem to be in a very similar boat as you, finding the HV hobby in my teens and wanting to return to it with more experience/resources.

Your nuclear hobby sounds interesting and I would love to read your blog and/or paper once released. I am currently riding the nuclear fusion startup wave that has high demand for pulsed power engineers. No background in anything nuclear before this though, so I am curious to learn tidbits of history along the way.

Hello! my name is Brett from Oregon in the US. While I have experience with residential wiring my HV experience is limited, I started experimenting with tesla coils about 4 months ago. My first coil was a small slayer built with scrap 30 gauge wound on a toilet paper tube, driven by my kids snap circuit kit. Just a npn with two diodes on the base to limit current and a third to clamp. It would light a CFL up to about 2" with a 9V. I was hooked the second that CFL lit wirelessly. I've since wound a 2.25" pvc pipe with 12" of 30 gauge and driven it with a cheap amazon coil kit driver, 15v at 1500mA, designed and 'tuned' with the help of JAVATC. With a 1.75 by 10 toroid it will light the same CFL up to around 3 feet and will discharge without a top load, though breakout sparks continue to elude me. No surprise here since at around 20W it just doesn't perform. I've since purchased a cheap oscilloscope and plan to build a full bridge with rectified mains via variac using the SSTC2 schematics I found after reading Mads website. I look forward to learning from the wealth of information on this forum as well as the experience I'll gain as I blow up components 😂

Almost any issue can be figured out with proper scope captures.  Much harder to guess what an issue may be through just pictures and DMM measurements.

Good luck with your bridge build!  Mads site has lots of great information.  A couple tutorials I've posted here might be helpful too:

Hello everyone,
My name is Max and I am an I.T. Engineer from the US, all the way down in Louisiana.

I have been interested in Electricity since quite a young age, and have always studied it alongside all my learning.
I have also been a Musician since quite a young age, and have played many instruments and ran a small recording studio in the early 2000s.
So, when the discussion of Frequency comes up in circuits, I attribute it to my knowledge of acoustics.

I enjoy Amplifier design, especially Tube / Valve amplifiers, as they (to me) sound amazing musically.
I have studied the works of Tesla, and many others throughout my years, and I have an odd passion for Inductance, and all things in the EM field.
I have worked with speaker design, crossover design, and a little amplifier design, but I am by no means great at the Electrical Engineering side of our field.
My primary work has been with IT and for the past two decades or so, with Wired and Wireless / RF, and Network Design and Engineering.

I plan on building a Plasma Toroid circuit, and after studying quite a bit of the works of people who have built, and designed similar circuits, I figured this would be a great place to document and share these designs.
Hopefully, this is a good place for this and there are still active members.
If so, I'll create a large build thread with lots of useful information for others who wish to build one of these circuits, and hopefully collaborate with others to improve and maximize the circuit qualities.

Thanks,
Max

Yes, there are certainly active members and discussions here.  Would love to learn about your build.  Plasma toroid experimenting is on my list of future some-time projects.  At least initially I'll use argon because it is cheap and I can easily play with pressure.  Do you have a good source for a glass globe filled with xenon or other gas mixture?

BTW, my sister lives in Lafayette, LA, so I'm a bit familiar with Louisiana.

As always, it is great to see more people join the HVF community! Young, old, experienced, new learners and great to see the eager to build and share :)

Thanks for taking the time to give an introduction of yourselves :)

I guess I better start my build thread then.

I purchased my globe from Wayne Strattman
https://strattman.com/
I ended up going with a 2-liter Globe filled with Xenon.

I am quite excited about this project, as I have always been fascinated with HV, Tube electronics, EM Theory, and amplification.

I'll be basing my design on the work that so many other amazing people have already contributed.

Also,
Which forum would be best for my project?
It is mostly based on the DRSSTC Design,
Using the basic design theory of Steve Wards Type E Self Resonant design.
But I plan on doing a lower-power version and using Mosfets / IGBT.
Eventually, I'm gonna power it with tubes.
Because Tubes powering tubes is well rad.
But for now, I am going to mostly copy designs that are previously created,
And if it is allowed, I would love to involve the community in a discussion of the theory involved.
I have so many wild questions, and don't mind being corrected, especially by competent engineers, who can teach me how to do it properly.

Looked at that web site.  Didn't find any specs other than xenon and 2-liter.  Is fill pressure listed?  Glass thickness?  If you have a scale, weight would allow an estimate of average glass thickness.  I gather that typical xenon pressure for toroids is 15 to 50 torr.

Good question.  Hope others will respond here.  I don't see an obvious fit.  Some previous plasma toroid posts are within the SSTC topic.

Frequencies for plasma toroids are generally far too high for IGBTs.  Most use either standard Si or faster SiC FETs.  I'm planning to use an SiC FET when I eventually get around to experimenting.

Tubes are more forgiving of mistakes.  They don't fail as instantly as do FETs.  Might be less frustrating to use tubes from the start if that is final goal.

Yes, definitely.  There are physicists on the forum, at least one besides myself, probably more.  There is some theory discussion in this existing plasma toroid thread:

Yes, the forum is definitely for questions, not just display of projects.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.  The more I learn before trying one myself, the easier it will be.  My goal is to generate a sufficiently strong initial magnetic field that toroid ignition occurs from magnetically induced field, not requiring capacitive coupling to start.
