SCR rating for capacitor dump
« on: September 07, 2024, 12:59:54 AM »

If for example I wanted to dump a capacitor into a coil, using solid state components. Nothing too dramatic, let's say from a 1000v 3uF film capacitor. What sort of componentry should I be looking at?

Is this
https://mouser.com/ProductDetail/IXYS/CLA100E1200TZ-TUB?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvLfqGeKEshXzRZzYD%252B%2F2e1%2Fa%2F9wApXDZ3F56seD8xlLA%3D%3D
SCR suitable? rated 1200V and 160A RMS.

I'm getting about 800A peak draw(?) using 4uH load, but how tolerant would a 160A rms SCR be of this (if that calculation is accurate at all). Assuming I can run them in parallel, should I use a full 5 to make up 800A.

What's the repetition rate?

Your peak-current estimate sounds about right for a circuit with 4 uH and not much damping.
I think simulation would show an SCR to stop conducting when current reaches zero at the end of first half-cycle, leaving a large reverse voltage on the capacitor.

The SCR you pointed to looks fine for an isolated current pulse like that.
Datasheet shows surge current limit of around 1000 amps for a half-cycle at 50 Hz or 60 Hz; your pulse would be about 1000 times shorter.
With more details about your application, we might get into discussion about the I-squared-t limit given in datasheet.

Don't forget theres also the dI/dt rating to watch out for. Thats just as critical as I2t with capacitor dump circuits.

Thankyou.

I guess I'm just trying to understand the simplest scenario possible, a single discharge whether into a coil, exploding wire or a beetle etc. A small scale just for experimental use.

I've been looking for a transformer to match it but they don't seem to be on the major vendors (Digikey/Mouser) the best I could see was a couple xenon transformers but I doubt they are good for over 500V or so. Do small 1:100ish transformers exist outside of Aliexpress?

Sounds interesting.
Can you give details about how a matching transformer would fit into your "capacitor dump" application?

No, it's not really interesting, I'm just referring to the driver transformer to achieve the voltage to charge the capacitor. An LCD backlight transformer is looking like the prime suspect atm. But again these seem to only be available through aliexpress.

An electric fence transformer sounds more like what you are alluding to, they function off a capacitor dump into an output transformer. Which I guess is used to slosh back and forward creating the most hurty waveform.

For charging your cap, I like your LCD backlight power idea. (with HF HV rectification)
How about the lowest-voltage neon sign transformer you can find?
Or even a MOT with primary voltage at 30% of nominal? (still potentially lethal)
Or 24V line frequency transformer (for galvanic isolation), feeding 120 V primary of a MOT, then using the M.O. diode and capacitor to double the output?
Here's a little 480 volt control transformer on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265709708873

The truth is I have probably 30 or 40 transformers sitting around that I could jerry rig into something that would work, but the reason I was asking about Mouser/Digikey etc. was so I could send a gerber/BOM off to PCBWay and have something functional sent back as a single coherent unit. I don't know if a current sense transformer can be made to function outside of its role or not, they seem to be the only things on these major electronics retail sites. Something like https://au.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Pulse-Electronics/PE-67050NL?qs=18kBAoNi3c9rv8MOX435Fg%3D%3D Which is a small 1:100 ratio transformer but only 1 turn on the primary, they are cheap enough to use a few in parallel.

This is what I shall be inclined to use if I cannot find anything that would work in a BOM. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005938312002.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.1a001802wDL9fn neat little 1:63/126 .
