First DRSSCT
« on: December 19, 2022, 11:49:59 AM »
Hello everybody,

I'm new to this great and informative forum. But I have been involved in electronics for a long time, some of my designs can be seen at https://stacer.rajce.idnes.cz/ and although I have no experience in building Tesla transformers, I decided to build a DRSSTC.

Here in the Czech Republic the voltage is 230 VAC, so the bus voltage will be 340 VDC. Driver and power part will be according to the schematics by Steven Ward. So far I have made only toroid using 3D printing and duck tape, see photos.

Originally I was planning a half-bridge with IGBT FGA60N65SMD, but now I'm considering a full-bridge and would like the opinion of more experienced people if it makes sense for the given coil size.

I'm also not entirely clear on what voltage I should size the MMC for.

I'm attaching screenshots of the JavaTC - is this OK?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Stanislav

EDIT: I don't know why, but the linked photos are not showing up. Here are the links:

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Depends.. Do you aim for biggest possible sparks a DR coil of your size can put out? In that case: full bridge.
With half-bridge the voltage you output to the primary coil is 1/2*340V, therefore the primary current will ramp up slower and so the power will be lower => smaller sparks.
You can do two things to compensate for smaller voltage on primary coil:
1.) Longer ontimes - leading to higher stress of transistors.
2.) Higher coupling - usually not possible in DR topology, due to already high risk of flashovers.

Since you're a beginner, I would advise you to use half-bridge topology. When I started my first coil: https://www.uhvlab.org/drsstc-i (very similar to yours) I blew the bridge like 4x before I got it running reliably.
In case you blow up your bridge, it's much easier and cheaper to replace half-bridge (only 2 transistors instead of 4).

Your topload and JavaTC results look fine.
Looking forward to your progress.

Thanks for the answer. Starting with a half-bridge sounds like a reasonable idea :).

One more question - is there any way to estimate what voltage I should size the MMC for?  Ideally, so that it will also suit the later full-bridge.

If you know what frequency will your coil run at, capacitance of your MMC and you also know the primary current you're aiming for, then it's simple circuit theory:

Impedance of your MMC in resonance: 1/(2*pi*f*C)
Voltage on MCC = Primary current * Impedance in resonance.

In your case you choose 70nF of capacitance, frequency of 200kHz.
Therefore: |Z| = 1/(2*pi*200kHz*70nF) = 11.4Ohms
For FGA60N65 IGBTs I would recommend maximum current of 300A.
So V = |Z|*Ipk = 11.4Ohms * 300A = 3420VAC. This is the AC voltage your capacitor should be able to withstand. 70nF@3500VAC is not that big MMC so I recommend not to save money on it.
With bigger MMCs we usually save some money by only looking at the DC specs of capacitor which are slightly higher. For example some capacitor could have rating of 1000VDC and only 680VAC. You should be looking at the AC specs.

I'm glad I could help. The majority of things you need to know to design a DRSSTC could be read about here: https://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/
