Hello there :)

My Name is Jan, 31 yo, I am German but living in Trondheim, Norway. I work as a service technician in an event company. So the last years I mostly repaired amplifiers (from tube to class D), all kind of electrical instruments, moving lights and much more. I am also sound technician. Back in my electrical engineering studies i was auxiliary scientist in a high voltage laboratory. So my passion in sound and electronics resulted in audio teslacoiling (or maybe the other way around ::))
I come to this place because this forum seems to be the activest one for Tesla Coils. After I got so much information from the general tesla coil community I also want to share my work and ideas and I am curious to discuss further developments.

My "coiler career" started back in 2010 with a simple SGTC. After another SGTC I built a SSTC with audio input in 2013. I think it was based mostly on Steve Ward and kaiserpower designs.

In 2014 I built a DRSSTC with the UD2.7 as logic basis and mostly took the knowhow from loneoceans website. With up to 2m spark length at 3kW it was amazing. I really enjoyed playing MIDI tracks on it.

Then there was an QCW in 2020/2022, which i never really finished completely, but i learned a lot.

At this point I learned so much about how everything works that I started designing my own drivers in KiCAD to fit them to my needs.

I got really curious about other ways of audio teslacoiling. My next idea was to half rectify an audio signal and modulate it.
In 2023 I built a phase shifted CWSSTC that uses this half rectified audio signal with an extra offset, so there will be always a little spark on the breakout point. I never intend to build a plasma speaker, but after the first low voltage test i was suprised about the accuracy of the sound with phaseshifting. I will rework this project to improve inputpower, sparklength and reliability.

My newest project is the reason to come to this forum, because I want to talk about what went good and what went wrong and discuss about further development. I'll open a topic during the next weeks.
It is a pulse skipped DRSSTC. The OCD circuit compares primay current with an half rectified audio signal. The pimary current envelop follows an audio signal. This results in an 50% ON time. To be able to have a good engough control, the busvoltage is low (100V) so the current between pulses raises not to quick. As power supply I have only an old UPS battery pack from garbage. This fitted my needs for testing it perfectly, but I am still very limited in power (~2kW). But see for yourself how it went:

There is not much documentation of this type of creating audio modulated tesla coils. I want to go deeper into this specific topic. I am looking forward to future discussions :)

Best regards from Norway
Jan

Hi everyone.

Well, I’m not a new member here or 4hv.org, but haven’t posted anything in years.!

I don’t know if there is any of the old “coilers” still around, that can remember me and my DRSSTC build(s) and work with Finn Hammer.

Many years ago I made a DRSSTC that I named Diable Tonnere, build the same year that Finn Hammer made Thumber (the largest DRSSTC at that time) and the Prediktor driver. Finn and I had a design contest back then, and could make some rather advanced mechanical parts, as we both are educated toolmakers.

My electronic and coiling activities stopped 13 years ago, but I still have a couple of DRSSTC’s and an half build VDG + most of my components and equipment from back then. And I’m now considering getting my coils up and running again😊

I need something to do in the winter time, as I don’t hike and drive around in my micro camper, when it gets cold and snowy outside. So why not start coiling a bit again😊

I work as a CNC programmer and macro writer, and work with 5axis milling of micro components for the medical, electronics and military industry. Small complex
parts in the range of 1.5x1.5x3mm to about 40x40x40mm, in materials that almost no one else will work with in the industry. All CNC machines and robot systems are in a climate controlled environment, so we can produce parts with 0.005mm accuracy 24/7😎 Gave up coiling, but still rather nerdy by nature!

There might be some “dumb” questions from me from time to time, I’m more than rusty with electronic design and programming. And I can see that the young people make some rather advanced stuff these days😊
I don’t have an education in electronics, and all was self learned back then(with help from Finn Hammer, and the Professors at my old place of work at the local University).

I will drop by, as soon as I get a new lab power supply, and begin to power up the old drivers😊

Cheers,

Daniel Uhrenholt

Welcome Jan and Daniel!

Jan: I am looking forward to see a thread about your latest builds and experiments, let's dive into the details :)

Daniel! Great to see you back :) It must be 10 years since we met in Fredericia where you did a Tesla show with Finn.

Hi everybody.

My name is Dominik, i'm from Slovakia and i have a Master's degree in Biotechnology. I have been interested in Electricity, especially high voltage stuff since a quite young age.
My goal has always been to build a big DRSSTC that uses IGBT bricks instead of the TO-247 package (i'm still working on it).
This forum taught me a lot of things and i have learned a lot about power electronics. Since 2018 i have built a few DRSSTCs, mostly small sized ones.

Small Twin coils -->  approx. 400 kHz , FGA60N65SMD Half-Bridge , 35cm spark lenght , OCD 180A
Medium DRSSTC --> approx. 175 kHz , IRGP50B60PD1 Full-Bridge,  90 cm spark lenght, OCD 350-360A

Hi All!

My name is Adam - I'm an electrical engineer by trade, living in Southern California, USA. I've been interested in high-voltage and power electronics ever since I built my first musical CW-SSTC in college a few years back. Since graduating, I've been preoccupied with other life-things, but this year I really wanted to build a bigger, better, and louder musical SSTC. I've got the coil itself built, but the musical part is probably going to get done sometime after the holidays, maybe February or so, we'll see  ;).

I've been a high-voltage hobbyist since about 2016, but until now I haven't engaged much with the community. Hoping to change that going forward! I look forward to learning from you all and maybe contribute something myself along the way!  :)

I also have a website where I occasionally write posts about stuff I build that I find interesting and worthy of a post: http://acordingley.us

Hi,
I'm Joe, a polymath, from Croatia. There isn't a boring topic in mind. I'm here to figure out Warp. :)
