Phoenix's DRSSTC - First Light
« on: January 06, 2018, 04:24:43 PM »
Hello everybody  :)
Today i conducted my first test with the secondary. I have built a new MMC with 60 Wima FKP1 capacitors. This gives me 375nF at 6400V. The OCD was set to 500A, but i think i can go up to 750A with my SKM200 Bricks. The input voltage during the test was about 180V AC and it drew around 13A. The OCD did not trip. The ceiling of the garage was about 1,2m above the breakout-point and the arcs had no trouble reaching it. The resonance frequency of the secondary is around 90kHz with the topload, so i set the primary to 85kHz because of spark loading. In the next days i am going to run the coil outside to see how long the sparks can get. I think 2m should be possible at full power.

Here you can see some test videos:

Congratulations on first light!

You properly have much more tuning to do, especially when moving the coil between such two very different environments as a garage and free nature. if you do not have/dare a oscilloscope to watch primary current waveform, you can try to tune lower and watch spark length vs. input voltage vs. ocd trip.

Do you have 230VAC and 400VAC? 600V silicon can be used with 400VDC bus voltage, then you still have a good head room.

Again a good looking and correct constructed MMC you made. Could you please post more pictures of the complete coil/setup? :)

Looks good! The new MMC specification is definitely better than before - 6400V rating should give enough margin for ~1000A peak @ 85kHz or so.

Mads: I believe that the silicon is 1200V (SKM200GB128D), so even voltage doubled 230V mains is fine.

You shouldn't have any issues going to at least 750A peak (and probably a bit more) with those bricks; I did it with my similar SKM200GB125D IGBTs. Your 128Ds have similar junction-case thermal impedance as the 125Ds and slightly better current ratings, suggesting a similar size die and peak current capability.

Thanks for your replies  :)

Yes, i am using the SKM200GB128D Bricks from Semikron. Right now i can go up to 350V DC Bus Voltage (250V AC rectified with my variac). In the third picture you can see a CT for measuring the primary current at the right side. If the system is tuned properly, the primary current is going to decrease am i right?
Here you can see my whole setup:

The setup is just provisional right now. I need to think of a proper way to mount the topload on the coil securely. I am also going to rewind the secondary because my epoxy cured to quick and now i have ugly spots on the coil.  :( The secondary coil is fully functional but it looks ugly. Luckily, i have bought enough wire to wind another one. The new coil is going to have 1800 turns instead of 2150. This is going to decrease the height ratio and therefor give me longer sparks because of the higher coupling.

But i have one question: If i decrease the number of turns, the resonance frequency will also rise. Is this going to influence my performance in a negative way?

If the system is tuned properly, the primary current is going to decrease am i right?

To a certain point, the better tuned the more power is transferred to the secondary circuit, a badly tuned primary would have a higher circulating current, but at some point your coupling does not allow for more power transfer and the only thing you can do is increase the coupling, but at the increase risk of flash overs etc.

But i have one question: If i decrease the number of turns, the resonance frequency will also rise. Is this going to influence my performance in a negative way?

You will have higher switching losses in your inverter, but when it comes to spark performance you will not be able to notice any difference. The good thing is however that you get a slightly taller coil so you can make longer sparks. You will also get a higher impedance secondary circuit, so you could run it at lower primary peak current, but for longer on-times. Again, you will have some more losses on this account, but high impedance coils is a little less drastic in their spark formation.
