Are you planning to run your H-bridge at 35V or less?  Looks like a 35V bypass capacitor at the bridge.  If you do plan higher voltage (and a cap change) eventually, you may want to consider lower parasitic inductance in bridge construction too.  This example starts with a half-bridge, later updated to full bridge.

My plan was to make the driver and GDT waveforms as good as possible before I even attempt to build something more powerful. That's why I built a simple H-bridge with mosfets that i don't mind destroying. I've had bad experience by using expensive IGBTs with a driver that gave horrible waveforms, causing over +20 IGBT and mosfet deaths. I will definitely use rectified mains later on, but now I should master the basics. The current H-bridge with IRFP360 is a test bridge as I wanted to make the waveforms clean before using higher power IGBTs.



  Fewer turns shortens total GDT wire length.  Leakage inductance is proportional to wire length, including leads.
I really did not want to cut the current GDT wires shorter but I will create a similar GDT with shorter wires, in the upcoming days. However I did notice that the waveform improved when i lowered frequency:
Yellow - Driver output
Blue - Mosfet gate terminal
~418Khz


~176KHz


~120KHz


~41KHz


Should I ditch the idea of using smaller 470KHz coil and instead replace it with ~200KHz coil?

Hello!

While building my first DRSSTC i've ran into an issue. The rise/fall times at the mosfet gate are too slow at ~450KHz frequency. Here's an example:

When i short the gate resistor i get a 2x faster rise and fall times but they are still too slow:


The waveform at the drivers output looks like this:


This is how my entire setup looks like:

GDT (1:1 ratio for all windings. 1 center, 4 gate windings):



I have tried the following:
*Removed 18V regulator that wasted 1W of power while doing nothing (Gate Waveform still the same)
*Increased power supply current to allow 2A max for the driver (nothing changed)
*twisted wires to reduce interference, cut all long wires to shorter length and removed those high resistance alligator clip wires (waveform had less interference but rise/fall time still the same)
*Added 2200uF capacitor at the power input (Drastically improved waveform balance- it was stuttering and jumping around without bus cap but rise/fall time still the same)
*Connected GDT directly to mosfet gate (as previously mentioned, this made the rise/fall times about 2x faster ~500ns -> ~270ns but they are still too slow)
*Removed All mosfets and got this waveform at the gate terminal:

However, when the mosfets are placed back into the terminals the waveform goes back to the same as in the first picture:



I think that this isn't the drivers fault as the rise/fall times at the drivers output are ~44ns (Even when the GDT is connected to the driver and loaded with mosfets). The problem should be somewhere in the GDT itself or the FULL-bridge design, however with the attempts i mentioned above i haven't been able to get the rise/fall times faster than ~270ns at the mosfet gates.

Hello!

I am looking for a THT comparator that can compare vref(0V) with >1Mhz signals and give an output that looks like this:

So far I have used op-amps and comparators that i have - LM393N, LM393P, LM311P, LM358P, LM386N-1 and AD8055A.
At lower frequencies they work almost identical to the simulation. One exception is AD8055A which outputs distorted square wave with roughly 1.24V DC offset that i can't seem to get rid of:

 Resistor to ground only increases the current draw and a capacitor at the output messes with the rise/fall times making the square wave with slow rising edges. Main reason why i bought AD8055A was that I thought that it will compare the inputs at even 300MHz (as mentioned in datasheet) but i was wrong.
At higher frequencies, every op-amp and comparator that i have gives an output similar to this:

or even worse:


Does anyone know a comparator that could complete the function that i described?

I've found that PWM controllable fans need the PWM wire forced high (or whatever level switches them on) in TCs, otherwise the fan just interprets the TCs noise as the control input. On my first SSTC I could actually control the fan speed with the interrupter duty cycle because of this :P You can of course also try using a non-pwm controllable fan.

I just tried connecting 5V to the PWM control pin and the fan still shuts down. I'll later replace the fan with AC one. Thanks for the replies! :)

I've had good luck with grounded copper foil over the motor side of the fan, over just the center motor part, with a narrow strip of foil from that center foil along the fan wire route to the edge of the fan housing.  I typically have the fan negative supply lead grounded as well.

I raised the triode a few centimeters higher from the fan and covered the fan with Aluminium foil. Then connected the shield to the VTTC ground and fan negative rail.


A low impedance capacitor (if the fan is DC powered) hooked across the power input leads can also filter
 out noise from the Tesla output.

I also added capacitors. The fan still shuts down but now at a higher voltage. Previously the fan shut down at ≈160V but now it shuts down at ≈180V. I have ordered couple of zener diodes. I'll add them to the fan after i receive them.
As I have two fans in the system, the one that shuts down is 48V expensive one. The second fan is 12V and it has never shut down. Oddly the 12V fan is much closer to the coil and the 12V rail is 1,5m long.

Hi!

I was increasing the voltage with variac and at about 160V primary (160V x 20 = 3200V secondary) the cooling fan shut down. Fan name: DELTA THA1248BE

When there are no sparks I can increase HV supply to the maximum 230V primary (230 x 20 = 4600V secondary) and the fan would still run without problems. The fan is placed below the anode of GU-5B triode. The anode doesn't touch the chassis of the fan and the wires are distant from the fan:

The fan supply is a simple bridge rectifier and 2 capacitors:




I have tried shortening power supply wires and I even cut shorter PWM and RPM wires:

but that didn't help.

I suspect that the fields from the coil are what cause the fan to stop, because when there are no sparks but HV supply is on the fan runs normally. If the fields are to blame, is there a possible solution to this problem? Maybe the fan has some sort of protection that kicks in, that I'm not aware of...

Is it really that important to ground VTTC? I've used mine without connecting VTTC circuit GND to real ground rod. I've even touched the sparks and haven't had any issues ://

The best bet is to heat them to about 60C to make the oil less viscous and then it can seep out more easily

I placed both MOTs in the sun and they reached temperature of +45C. With a combination of paper towels and a toothbrush, i'm slowly getting rid of the oil.

Perhaps sealing the transformer in a thin coating?
I could seal the primary and secondary coils if the oil keeps leaking out.

Acetone is probably your best bet. I did an experiment to see if It would damage the insulation on the secondary coil. After leaving some varnish-insulated wire in acetone for a day it appeared to have no affect. The advantage of acetone over gasoline, for example, is that the acetone will completely evaporate. Thus, no residual gasoline smell.

I tried acetone and the oil became more like a fluid for a couple of seconds. I will add more acetone later, as I don't have much left.


Edit:
With the combination of acetone + keeping MOTs in the sun (turning them over from time to time) + using paper towels to clean the remaining oil, I made the transformers dry enough to place them into my setup. Thanks for the replies!

Hi!

I would like to remove oil from 2 MOTs that are completely covered in Engine oil (MANNOL 7512):



 The reason is that I want to place them clean on a wood surface like this:


I have tried using paper towels to clean the MOTs. After several hours of cleaning, they are still oily as the oil is still inside the windings where i can't reach with my papers. Is there a way to get MOTs completely dry from oil?

You can also try this arrangement:



You get damping of the GDT with the 20 ohms, and faster turnoff thanks to the current gain of the transistor. It wont give you negative gate drive though, which can be useful sometimes.

I used that arrangement with BC640 transistor and got this waveform:


I am not quite sure as to what is responsible for that little peak at the bottom. The peak is dV = 3.2V. It shouldn't be enough to turn IRLZ44N or IRFP460N completely on, however the peak reduces duty cycle to 42% which before was close to 50%.

Particular advantage is had from twisting twisted pair, to make a "star quad".  Consider the cross section, there are four wires in a circle.  Assign them P, S, P, S going around the circle.  This has closer to 25 ohms impedance, so quarter the inductance of a single pair, or half of two independent pairs in parallel.  Efficient!
I have twisted 3 wires and wound them around the core. I assume that ethernet cable would work the best since most of them have twisted pairs inside + shielded.

If you still want less overshoot, there are two options.  One is to add resistance in series with the gate diodes.  Some designs do that.  The other option is to reduce GDT leakage inductance and wiring inductance to and from the GDT.  If the GDT windings and/or the input and output leads aren't tightly paired (ie. twisted together), then there is more parasitic inductance than necessary.
I have twisted 3 wires together (primary, secondary1, secondary2).
Currently my GDT looks like this:


The diode (D2) that is across the gate resistor will bypass it during the negative going part of the waveform.
The result would be under damped (overshoot).
I removed D2 and the undershoot is gone:

I can speak from personal experience that the search for the perfect waveform can be a real drag. Figuring out what is important
is a better goal :-)
I didn't achieve the "perfect" waveform, however without the diode I have no undershoots and with 20R resistor the overshoot is also gone. I think that I'm ready to assemble small test bridge with IRLZ44N mosfets and if those work, then proceed with IRFP460.

Hi!

My goal is to achieve the perfect GDT waveform to power my DRSSTC. After many experiments, I improved the waveform to the point that I flattened overshoot, however I am struggling to figure out how to flatten undershoot. I made circuit analysis as seen below:


Waveform with 20R at gate (flattened overshoot):


Waveform with 10R at the gate (with overshoot):


Diode/resistor change only made difference to overshoot. Undershoot remains the same even after resistor/diode change. The whole circuit is built on a breadboard, however I made connections as close as possible. All the details should be in the circuit analysis attachment. :)

Any ideas on how to eliminate undershoot or at least minimize it?

This is exactly what I want to know, but I have other question.

What is the max BPS and minimum BPS I can use in the DRSSTC?, because we can listen from 20 to 20kHz, therefore to play all songs thr DRSSTC have withstand from 20BPS to 20kBPS.

Am I right?

20KBPS would stress regular DRSSTC a lot. Even 50BPS + 100 caused problems for my SSTC. If You want to listen to regular music coming from the plasma, i suggest building HFSSTC.

Does the reactance peak when You touch the coil or is it random? I remember i had a circuit that would short the mosfet when i touched the spark at high power.

This circuit will result in a pile of dead mosfets if you're not careful(speaking from experience). You can try adding 1.5ke15ca at the gate and 1.5ke400ca at the source/drain. This slayer exciter is great for quick sparks but it can be hard to get longer sparks. The longest i've achieved were 40cm long.
