60kV 10mA DC power supply. Regulated, switchable polarity.
« on: October 07, 2021, 05:40:00 PM »
Hello everyone. I am new here.

I would like to show you the power supply I built a few months ago. It is intended to use as HV source for X-ray tubes, insulation testing, testing hv components and experiments that require HV DC.
Specifications:
Voltage: +/- 60kV regulated
Current: 10mA regulated
CV/CC mode.
Polarity switch
Output power: 600W continously.
Efficiency: 70-80% depending on load.
Input voltage: 24-35VDC
Output to Rg214 cable, through custom connector.

Some details of construction.
The main part of device is high voltage transformer fed by modified ZVS driver. It has 6 secondaries connected to voltage doublers. Each doubler has series damping resistor. All doubler circuits are connected in series. Output of transformer goes to polarity switch, and then to measuring voltage divider and HV connector. All HV part of circuit is placed in oil tank. Low voltage part consists of modified ZVS driver, chopper, control and feedback circuitry. I chose to build primary circuit with 30 VDC input because it is safer and easier to repair.

Hi huntergroundmind! Welcome to the forum. Interesting power supply. I like the HV transformer. I looked at your website and have come to the conclusion that you are a true Mad Scientist!  :D

Nice work. Stands as an inspiration for me to finish at least one HV DC power supply project, or even a HV resistive load.

When energizing x-ray tubes, I'm sure you will pay attention to radiation safety.   In terms familiar to radio-isotope enthusiasts, you have the power to turn on more than 1000 whole curies of gamma-like activity. Many tens of TBq.

Also pay attention to anode heat.  Be a shame to break a nice Coolidge tube because it spent too many seconds illuminating a fluorescent screen in your well shielded enclosure.

Thanks for nice words :) Klugesmith, yes, radiation safety is extremely important. Effects of radiation can be real nightmare. Long cable for control box of power supply helps alot to accomplish it in comftable way. Actually I had x ray tube head long before I build this supply :) Before it I powered tube from CW multiplier. Speaking about cooling I overbuild it in some way. It has forced transformer oil cooling. I was afraid that in my compact enclosure tube will have not very good conditions for natural cooling. Metal walls of enclosure are covered with layer of lead, then paper and mylar that have low thermal conductivity. Tight enclosure impede convection of oil, also it have low thermal mass. Oil is cooled in small radiator, and it is pumped by fuel pomp from car. Tube was taken from old chirana dental head.
