I'm not sure on where to find any 7m3's, but I have a friend who said he can ship me a few samples of a similar 7mm variable inductor. I'm not sure about the part numbers and such, but he said its a similar inductor by looking at the Coilcraft web page. I'll try attach some pictures when they arrive.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I can get a few samples and ill try a few of them out, especially the ones on loneocean's page as I plan to use TO-247 IGBTs.

Thanks again!

Hey guys, I'm working on my first DRSSTC, which started off as a small project since a few years ago. Progress is extremely slow, due to high costs and unavailability of time. Recently, I have been populating profdc9's UD2.7c through hole PCB, due to the unavailability of SMD parts in my country. I have mostly populated it, other than the UVLO IC and the Slot 7 inductor. I'm unsure about the value for the inductor... I plan to run my 4.3x11" secondary wound with 39 SWG at around ~105khz with the topload (JavaTC). How should I choose this inductor value?

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: Two GDT's for full bridge??
« on: October 28, 2023, 02:15:22 PM »
Thank you AstRii and Benjamin for your replies!

I don't see the reason why this should not work but let me give you an alternative.
It might be even cheaper (especially while you're still in the designing phase of the PCB) to design better cooling for the chip.
Use of large ground layers and thermal vias can help with heatsinking enough to cool the chip.
There are even some SMD heatsinks (although they are usually a bit expensive), but you can design the PCB such a way that a normal heatsink can be pressed against the chip (with screws for example). With a bit of thermal paste, this should work well and since you're on a budget, save you a bit of money.
I kinda tested that out with a homebrew PCB just for the chip, and sadly, it didnt fully work. I will be ordering from a local store, and I will be able to get different copies of the circuit for a pretty low price. I will try that and let you know. Thanks :)

You could also parallel 2 chips and use one GDT.
I will try that on my non-pcb circuit that I test on, and if it works as intended, I will definitely use that on my board. Thanks  :)

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Two GDT's for full bridge??
« on: October 25, 2023, 03:48:45 PM »
Hi guys, I'm designing a new PCB for a SSTC, and for the gate drive section, can one use two dual gate drivers such as the UCC27524A, each to drive one GDT, one GDT per half of the full bridge?
Reason for this is, a single chip heats up when driving a full bridge of IRFP460s, and as I am on a tight budget, I dont want to buy other chips...
Schematic attached below.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: ZCS for SSTC without E class??
« on: October 24, 2023, 05:30:38 AM »
Thank you for recommending me that video. I now understand how a PLL works.

The best running PLL coil I've seen is the already mentioned Jakub Tejiščák's coil, although I've never quite understood how does his approach achieve ZCS:
https://www.vn-experimenty.eu/teslov-transformator/sstc/sstc-5.html
He is modifying the value of R2 to get ZCS, but in my understanding, R2 is there only to set the frequency range at which the PLL can operate. Somehow it works though. Maybe someone can clear this up?

That's the part that I dont understand too. I know how the PLL oscillates at the right frequency, but how is ZCS achieved?

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: ZCS for SSTC without E class??
« on: October 23, 2023, 11:49:28 AM »
Thank you AstRii and Dave for taking your time to reply to my message.
If there is just enough delay in the feedback, but not too much, ZCS can be the result.  Perhaps a feedback delay adjustment would suffice at least in some cases.
I have an adjustable RC delay in my feedback, but when I adjust it even a tiny bit, the output decreases significantly...
If I understand that correctly, when the load current on the primary is much higher than the magnetizing current, the primary current will be sinusoidal (assuming the secondary current is sinusoidal). Then with some clever feedback circuitry like PLL you can set the phase of the current to be close to in-phase with the output voltage of the bridge.
I thought about PLL, but it sounds a bit complicated to implement. I've found a circuit online for a PLL SSTC, but the diagram says 300-400khz and my planned secondary resonates at around 201 kHz (JavaTC). I want to know how to tune such a circuit to drive a lower frequency secondary... The circuit is attached below.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / ZCS for SSTC without E class??
« on: October 22, 2023, 08:01:57 PM »
I was wondering if there was any way to use ZCS in a normal, non DR, non class E SSTC...

Is there any way that something like this is possible??

Thanks Mads for your reply!

High voltage experience, I got one. The friend I mentioned earlier, his dad works at a high voltage power distro place. He knows about safety and has experience with HV power distro lines :)
Regarding the oscilloscope, I have access to a Keysight InfiniiVision MSOX3054T.
I'll stay with the Loneoceans design and build it. I plan on starting in December when school tests are over.
If I have any further clarifications, I'll put a post here.
Thanks Again!

Thanks alan for your reply! So you mean that I can just copy his design and parts and somehow make it work?? I have a design idea based on Loneoceans DRSSTC 2 and my own secondary coil from Kaizer Power Electronics medium secondary 1(attached below). Will it work?? I am limited to 20A 240V max power which is 4.8kw. Will this be enough?? Or shall I have to install a new 30A breaker(which I do not want to do)?
Thanks again!

Thanks all for your replies!
I just remembered, I had experience building an SSTC, though not mine. A few years back, me and my friend stated working on a tesla coil for the science fair at our school. We ended up building an SSTC because SGTCs were loud, noisy and unable to play music. Even though not the best design, we ended up getting second place, mostly because the music played impressed the judges.
We used a half-bridge of 50N60 IGBTs and a secondary coil of 12"x3.5". It had a resonant frequency of around 170khz.
So, just give me a comprehensive beginner guide so I can get going!

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Beginner DRSSTC Help Pls
« on: November 04, 2021, 07:05:42 AM »
Hello there guys
So I want some help regarding my first DRSSTC... I am going to design it around Loneoceans Labs DRSSTC 2. So since this is my first time building a solid state coil(i have built a sgtc before), I would like some help. I want to build an almost exact clone of his build, or if its not possible, I would also add Steve Ward's DRSSTC 1 designs to it and make my own design.
Any help is apreciated.
Binuk

PS: I am only 13 so pls don't invade me with super advanced calculations and stuff ;D

Spark Gap Tesla Coils (SGTC) / TESLA COIL (SGTC) DESIGN IDEAS
« on: August 10, 2021, 03:49:15 PM »
Hello

This is my first post... So I about 2 years ago I bought one of those mini diy tesla coil kits off amazon. They play music and all, but the arcs are way way too small for me. I have a lot of experience with high voltage (multipliers, zvs drivers, mots, xray transformers). Can anyone suggest a way to build an SGTC?? Possibly using the flyback transformer + ZVS driver??
A quick reply will be appreciated...

Regards
Binuk
