HP / PEGATRON APXD1-DM motherboard on 20VDC
« on: August 31, 2017, 05:08:55 PM »
The HP / PEGATRON APXD1-DM motherboard is used in small HP desktop computers, the Bluewood4/Bluewood4L motherboard PCs: https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03004082

These are made to powered from a external power supply at 19VDC/3A, but this voltage is not that common if you do not have the original power supply. I did however have access to many old Lenovo power supples, 20VDC/3A.

I tested this from a regulated bench power supply first, running the motherboard with a 3,5" SATA hard disk and CPU at 100% load it was pulling 1.6 A at 19 VDC, turning the voltage up to 20.5 VDC and it was drawing 1.49 A, so there is a built in DC-DC converter that ensures to regulate the input voltage.

19V (32 Watt) vs. 20.5V (30.5 Watt) shows that there is practically no difference in power draw, I guess the lessen power draw was either due to change in CPU load than higher efficiency of the DC-DC converter, but who knows.

So why do I post about something quite trivial, because if you google "can i use a 20v charger on a 19v", you will find a lot of dooms day advises and not so many actual measurements or tests, hopefully this will turn up in search results and help others.

So yes, a 19VDC HP motherboard will run on 20VDC!
