I will build this. Hopefully I won't kill too many IGBTs. I will report the results in like a month

I would say, try to rearrange those zener diodes like Fumeaux showed in his fixed schematic.

The ballast will allow only around 250W to pass and current about 3 amps, your will be better and may not heat at all and yes, it is this simple to wire a ballast from mains.

Yeah, it should be like this

Spark Gap Tesla Coils (SGTC) / Re: Would this be about right or not.

A lot of wire resistance plus a lot of inductance.
Actually, inductance doesn't matter on the secondary, because it is resonant, so XL = 0 R

And for the coil, take a look at this table https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TkpvH7e5geHCIhB_Gr3egwL_THJYqjZIU5INoo54nD4/edit#gid=482293335

You have a message :D

Sorry for double post but...

Its f***ing working !!!! my first DRSSTC.. after hundreds of hours and a lot of efort :D

1.8m long spark, OCD set to only 500A, 230VAC, CM300s are cold, but the coil need still tune a bit.

Thank you guys
Glad to see it working and good job, but I would say to change the underscored word that you used. The word begins with F and I don't think that you can use it here :D so change it

9
You should also see a doctor about that cough  ;D
Haha

I use minwax polyurethane which comes in a spray on or brushed on. I use a low tack tape like masking tape, blue tape, to hold it to gether and not loosen up and to hold it in case of a winding error breaking. hear is an example

https://www.loneoceans.com/labs/qcw/
:O It's so expensive and the only place I can buy it from is amazon. Better stick with my stuff and the coil warped because I didn't rotate it. Now my small coil is rotating and holding strong with third coat

10
Get 2 caps that fit onto your PVC pipe ( secondary form )
Drill both of them in the center, put them onto the PVC pipe and put a threaded rod through the middle ( all the way through ), secure with nuts on each end.
Attach to your motor using a coupling ( or anything you can think of )
Mount everything on a timber stand.

Good luck !

Cough* I actually do that for every of my other coils but this one was too big, but thanks

11
It also comes in tins for application by brush.
I also used "Cabothane" Polyurethane Varnish - it is a lot cheaper.
As far as your secondary is concerned, I have no idea why it did that. If your windings were nice and tight to start with, only reason I can think of why they would go loose and jump onto each other is if your secondary form ( PVC pipe I guess ) reacted with the varnish and collapsed.
Or, windings were not tight enough and slipped down ( you mentioned that it was standing upright overnight ).

You can build a simple jig for winding and varnishing using an old windscreen wiper motor, it is already geared down and slow turning. Connect it to a lab power supply and feed it just enough power so it turns slowly, or better, you can use a cheap PWM controller from eBay.
I actually have a crashed car which I can take the windshield wiper motor off and a lab bench supply, but I also have a motor from a old printer and it rotates pretty slow at around 1 volt so that's what I will use. And I use a varnish from a tin can, so I have experience with them. But it bugs me out that I can't just buy a 100% or so polyurethane varnish. I don't know if there's a law that makes them illegal or something but I should check that out. Thanks for helping me

12
Hi Filip,

I use Ultimeg manufactured by AEV, UK.
Hey Thunderstruck, I would not like to use spray varnish, because it takes hundreds of coats and more time to achieve a nice coat of varnish.

Here is the picture of my messed up coil after varnishing without rotating and leaving standing over night

I want to know if I can fix it somehow. The windings were perfect when I wound them but after varnishing they just warped.

13
Hello, I want to know which varnish should I use to coat the secondary coil, because the one I have is meant for wood and it messed up my coil's windings. The varnish contains: acrylic dispersion, polyurethane dispersion, water, glycol and additions

The cause may be because I didn't keep the coil rotating while it was drying so that may be the cause of this problem (I didn't experience the same with my micro coil)

I would buy this https://www.tme.eu/gb/details/ep108/encapsulating-materials/huntsman/cw5620-hy5610/ but it's not available in my country and I can't source something similar. So can you recommend me a varnish that you know works 100%?
Thanks

14
Hello, to answer the questions first:
1. Yes, they can be driven/regulated using SMPS
2. Actually it is, so you are right
3. The zener diodes are there for gate protection and they should be used
4. Yeah it should be but the gain of just the BD139 and BD140 may not be high enough and can reduce the gate drive, which may not make the mosfet open fully but partialy and thus it will work in its linear region, in which losses are big, so you should use the first stage too
6. They are just used as a filters, to filter the voltage rail

The secondary could be any coil with 1000+ turns and it should be 1:5 width:Height for small coils under 30cm, 1:4 for bigger coils Under 1m and 1:3 for big coils 1m<
The fcp20n60 is ok to use here.

15
-SNIP-
So basically, it's good to drive a SSTC with it but missing an OCD to drive a DRSSTC propely.

And if I add an OCD to this circuit I basically end up with UD1.3 or earlier?

16
Hello, basically why does it suck and is the OCD really needed at such a low power?

And if it sucks as a DRSSTC driver, then how good of a driver would it be for a SSTC?

Thanks for reading/replying.

17
So I am struggling to find a place where I can source components for fiber/opto isolated interrupter, so I want to know any Ebay links or tme.eu parts which will work or something and make this thread useful for people to use when they struggle to find it too. I looked up onetesla.com and they sell the fiber cable (10$), transmitter (8$) and a receiver (8$). Although I wouldn't mind paying something like 30 euros for those things+shipping but it's not always in stock and I struggle to find similar components on ebay. So, can anybody reveal his secret source of buying those components? Thanks

On the breadboard version, you have the 1K R12 pulling the base of Q5 high. It is supposed to be pulling it low, so connect it to the ground

19
Hello, I want to make my own SMPS, but I can never find a way to calculate the VA rating for a ferrite core and I want to know who knows the equation for calculating VA rating and or the required turn/frequency for wanted or max wattage or something.

I would use this core FERROXCUBE ETD49/25/16-3F3 https://www.tme.eu/en/Document/882e54fb8772e021c51c30b1d1879eab/etd49.pdf
and I would like to make at least 500-600W variable voltage power supply (if the core is suitable), but I don't know the calculations required to do this. But for now let's have a fixed IN, OUT voltage and out A
Let's say the PSU will work with 230V AC, so 325V Peak, the power of 600 watts, Max current input of around 3 amps and the output voltage of 60 volts and output current of 10 amps and the switching topology is half bridge using mosfets.

How do I get the required turns/operating frequency and wire thickness for the primary and turns and wire thickness/turns for the secondary with the values that are written in the datasheet? I found this
Quote
Using the Ampere's law, you can get the following equation:

E = Ae² * B² / (2 * AL)

E: energy stored in the magnetic field
Ae: core's effective area
B: maximum flux density allowed by the core material
AL: core parameter, depends on Ae, magnetic circuit lenght and air gap lenght

You see, power (P) is enery by time. More energe and less time will result in a higher power.

P = E / t

The input power at the inductor is the energy stored (E) divided by ton. Ton is the duty cycle (D) divided by the switching frequency (fsw).

P = E / ton = E * fsw / D

This is an aproximate way to determine how much power you can obtain from a certain core. Actually there are losses by eddie currents, joule effect and stray flux.
But this equation needs the operating frequency for power calculation, so I can't learn much from it.

The 3F3 core parameters from Ferroxcube website:

PS: I am not asking you to calculate the things for me, just to help me and/or show us the equations for the things so it helps the people that will look for it

Electronic Circuits / Re: Isolated Series Li-ion Charger
« on: December 22, 2018, 03:51:25 PM »
I didn't bother with putting led's before the resistors on pins 6 and 7. They respectively show the charging and charged status of the battery and the IC TP4056 is working as I've used it before and it doesn't need current sense resistor on the batteries.

Also I don't want to use any other IC, because they are in SMD packages only and I don't have the right equipment to solder SMD components. And the TP4056 is very common 18650 Li-ion charging circuit on ebay and youtube and it comes as a module from ebay even with protection https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Micro-USB-TP4056-li-ion-li-po-lipo-Battery-Charger-Module-Discharge-Protection/272986428636?hash=item3f8f4254dc:m:mZvOYFXrR8CXcgPDwxGjHyg:rk:3:pf:0

Also if the battery gets discharged (one of them), the 4S protection board I will use contains Under Voltage Protection, so it turns off the control mosfet and this interrupts the current flow into RL.
