Well, I am back on this forum again after several years...
Anyways, I found the guts of this Spellman high voltage power supply in the garbage, and it seems like everything should work. All the power components test fine with a multimeter. The only problem is that the front panel (with all the controls) is missing and someone took all the screws holding the power components together.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it working again? There seems to be some interface on the back for connecting to a computer. I might have to just bite the bullet and design my own controller. From looking at their manuals it seems like something similar to an SLR inverter is used.

I found this circuit online and I might want to build it as I would like a high power low voltage adjustable supply. Original website: http://danyk.cz/reg60v_en.htmlIt runs off 220V so I'll probably need a doubler as I'm in a 110V country. Circuit looks reasonable and it looks like everything should work. (There's no power factor correction though). Is there any advantage to using two transistors like this instead of in a half bridge? I guess it makes the gate drive stuff easier, but are there any other advantages? I built the control circuit part for this thing already, anything I should watch out for when I build the power part?

Hi, I'm planning on building a bigger coil using more paralleled TO-247 parts. Bricks are really expensive for me, I can buy about 150 TO-247 IGBTs for the price of a single CM300 brick and I can buy 85 of them for the same weight (shipping from China is fairly expensive). I have an aluminum heat sink which can fit a full bridge of 7 paralleled IGBTs for 28 in total, and I should be able to switch 1750A peak current. (I checked and the parts have positive temperature coefficient, they'll all be on the same heatsink, and I'll arrange my IGBTs for current sharing). I'm guessing I might need to use a different driver because the gate capacitance is quite big (around 160nF for 7 IGBTs). Here's what I came up with: Are there any problems with my plan?

Hi, I'm going to college in a few months and I'm going to major in EE. I'm assuming a lot of people here are electrical engineers, and I'd like to know what courses to take and also about jobs. As you probably could guess, I'm interested in high power stuff, but I guess I'm not too bad at coding and other lower voltage stuff. Also, what are the newer and "hotter" fields in EE? (I'm guessing that things like quantum computing and fusion could become quite popular in a few years)

Hi, I have a problem with my gate driver, as it randomly kills IGBTs. I've already had to replace 4 of them due to this problem. Here's what my circuit looks like: Here's a couple pictures of my setup: The brown and green wires go to the GDTs A picture of the waveform with 2 44nF capacitors simulating the gates of the 4 IGBTs being driven by the GDT: (Scale: 10V/div & 2us/div) The driver circuit is a chinese version which uses a CPLD, but the output stage uses the same parts as the UD 2.7 (It uses the FDD8424) Here's a picture of it: I think I might need to swap the TVS diodes for a lower voltage one. Anything else I need to change? Edit: Unrelated question: I heard that you should use a fast diode instead of relying on the internal diode in the IGBT. Would using RURG8060 work, and would I need to put the diode on a heatsink? Thanks.

http://imgur.com/gallery/OcA4IgWI bought these 15600uF 2800v for 50 dollars each and I was wondering what kind of project I should build with them. I probably won't be able to afford scrs and switching 100kj is likely not easy. Any ideas?

I found this schematic online: (There are a few errors, like one of the diodes is backwards and one of the optocouplers is missing +15V. Because I am a poor student and I don't want to wait for parts, I made this schematic which uses only parts that I have. Basically, I got rid of the optocouplers, which I think act as level shifters. I also added a negative voltage generator because I want to run it off a single 15V supply. I don't have a lot of experience, so I would appreciate if someone checked my schematic before I turn it into a PCB. Thanks in advance.
