After running my big coil, I noticed lots of thermal warping and discoloration on the inner turns of the primary. I've never messed with watercooling before, but I'm told it can be really annoying, especially concerning long term storage and corrosion prevention. For those of you with watercooled coils, do you recommend it? Or should I just put a box fan next to the primary

I'm winding a secondary, nominally 12.75x60". A 10lb spool of 22awg only got me 42". I'm thinking about splicing another spool onto the end to get to 60". Could this be reasonably done, or should I just take the performance loss of a too short secondary?

New coil time! This one is joining the long line of MITERS coils. Specs: Inverter: BSM400GA120DN2 full bridge, possibly upgrading to CM600 or FZ600 if those die --now CM600-- MMC: 733nF 18kV, made with 15x .44uf 6kv dawn caps, rated for 300A rms but heavily air cooled just in case Bus capacitors: 12000uF 1050v - I shouldn't need as much as for example br0din coil as I'll hopefully have almost twice the power factor Primary: 3/8in copper tube, 3/8 in spacing, ~7in inner diameter Secondary: 12.75"x42" 22awg Topload: 42"x12" skeleton topload, 1/2 in aluminum tube, 13 rings, 15° spacing Power supply: up to 800V from a boost converter, likely will run at closer to 400V with looooong on times. Driver: UD3.1 with custom code to run the boost converter Expected to run anywhere from 10-30kW, maybe higher for short runs Boost converter: Uses ff600 half bridge with top igbt shorted open, 380uH 150A inductor from a prius inverter, switching at 16kHz using PID control Primary current: likely ~1kA with freewheeling, at least 1ms on time, 15-25% dtc max Top view of mostly finished electronics: Front view: Precharge uses capacitors instead of resistors as it's AC. I used 30uF motor capacitors, they work great! much faster than resistors with no power loss

So, I'm at college now and found there are Lots of free bits at the makerspaces around here, so with spare parts from a medium sized coil I built over the summer, I built this little guy. Coils: 5.5 ish turns of 12awg for primary, exact tuning doesn't seem to matter much. I have no clue what the secondary is, but it's likely an early onetesla secondary. 2.375" OD, 6.25" height, arbitrary sized 3d printed toroid on top (I think 1.6x6.2?); basically zero effort put into the coils. The secondary has a bunch of holes in the insulation and a tendency to flash over and I could use a taller one, so it's prone to replacement once it burns out (2 candidates in the Bin Of Old OneTesla Secondaries I found this one in). Supports laser cut from 6mm acrylic. Fres: 230khz, coupling: no clue but probably at least .2; barely low enough to not arc over. Inverter specs: BSM150 half bridge 300A OCD I designed it for doubled (120v) mains input, but with the on times I'm using, increasing past normal rectified mains gives no performance boost and only increases flashovers, so normal rectified mains (~150Vbus) is perfectly adequate 100nF dawncap UD2.9 w/ pulseskip 2x 200V 2200uF bus caps in series I'm using mostly TMax midistick for the interrupter with 12% duty cycle max, 1000uS on time max. It gets warm but I can run it for 5 to 10 minutes continuous before it starts getting uncomfortably warm. The inverter is passively cooled and heats up ever so slightly faster than the coils themselves, so I get plenty of runtime especially if it's cool out and the inverter's 80C thermal switch trips before any damage can be done. I'm not sure how much power it uses as I don't have a working ampmeter, but I haven't tripped any breakers and the 18awg input cables get warm so I'd guess between 5 and 10 amps. Videos: https://youtube.com/shorts/gyPdY8dJFyghttps://youtube.com/shorts/9rdtgXvGxZMMax recorded arc length is 17", and anything around 12" or below is thick and bright; the breakout point is quite discolored from the heat. I built this coil to be portable, easy to run, and reliable for showing friends and family what tesla coils are like. Aside from the secondary on its last legs, I'm very happy with it so far. I may try 2000us soon and see just how high can I go with this little guy, but for now another project (hint: Big drsstc) has priority.

I'm trying to tune a small drsstc I built. For the secondary, Fres=235khz, 215khz with simulated streamer. I can't seem to get the primary to resonate at 215khz. As I raise the voltage, it switches resonant frequency. All scope shots are primary current, roughly 80A/div. It starts out like image 1 with very low voltage, then develops a prominent current peak in image 2. For both of these it's resonating at ~190khz. I'm not sure why it does this, but I've seen it before. Then at a certain voltage in, in image 3, this starts from the end of the pulse and propagates towards the beginning where the current jumps up and the frequency jumps to 230khz. Image 4 shows it propagating further, and image 5 shows what I'd expect; the 290A OCD triggering throughout the pulse at near half input voltage. Changing the primary Fres doesn't seem to change the 230khz it always ends up resonating at. Is this upper pole operation? If not, what is it, why does it only start with high enough input voltage/big enough arc, and what should I do about it?
The coil is a BSM150 half bridge, 0-320V bus, old onetesla secondary and toroid so I don't actually know their dimensions. I built it with long pulse operation for good music in mind. Is there some kind of tuning that would make music sound the best?

I'm working on a very large drsstc. As the days of 150A GTO snubbers are unfortunately over, it's either $500 worth of dawncaps, $1000 worth of cde942's, or something one of yall can sell me. I'm looking for enough capacitor to have ~1uF +- .5uF, >15kV, >300Arms. >200Arms may be acceptable if it's easy enough to aggressively cool.
Thanks

For a half bridge, do the DC blocking capacitors (C4,C7) have to be rated for the RMS current passing through them? I can't find any suitable capacitors with an RMS rating above a few amps, and DRSSTC use passes at least a dozen RMS amps through them. Are there some special capacitors with a much higher current rating, or a reason why high current rating isn't needed?

I'm building a drsstc with a ud3 driver, which can monitor 10k NTCs for thermal protection. My half bridges each have integrated 5k NTCs. Can I put them in series and expect them to act like a single 10k? If not, what would I need to do to make the ud3 work with one of the 5k's?

In all the resources I see it's recommended to connect your driver enclosure, igbt heatsink, etc. to the rf ground. Why is that recommended? It seems like it just lets an hv pulse shoot through the igbts or kill the driver if you have a bad rf ground. I know that if you leave them floating, they'll pick up some voltage, but if it's enough to be dangerous why not connect them to mains ground directly or with a resistor?

I'm designing a big coil, and a point was brought up - during operation, full bus voltage is across a pair of gdt windings at all times. I'm hoping to use a boost converter for a bus around 1200v and cat5 wires have 300v insulation, so I don't want to risk a gdt flashover destroying my igbt gates. Are there any other cable standards like cat5 but rated for a sufficiently high voltage, or will I have to use individual wires?

I'm planning a large coil with hopefully 1ms on time for playing music, and am considering high vs low impedance designs. Most of the information I've seen about impedance was in regards to non pulse skipping design, so given that I am using pulse skipping and long on times, what difference will the impedance have? My current understanding is that low impedance will have higher MMC energy, so brighter (and louder?) arcs from faster current rise, but will be consistently skipping a lot of the pulses, reducing overall power. Would this be overall desirable? Also, could I add a small bank of film caps on the bus in addition to electrolytics to speed up current rise with a higher impedance design?

I've been having some problems with my primary coil heating up very quickly. It uses EVR's supports, and I'm running it at 400A OCD and 300us/12% duty cycle max. After a few minutes, the primary is hot enough to soften the polycarbonate and melt the plastic end caps. The aluminum frame also gets fairly warm, though there are no large loops. Is this reasonable/inevitable with those on times or does it sound like something else is going on? Thanks!

I'm having a weird and slightly concerning problem. Yesterday, I ran my coil at high power for a bit and turned everything off to check component heating. I have 10k power resistors across both the bridge output and the bus, but checked to be safe and both were pretty much empty (MMC 0v, bus 2v). But when I touched the primary to check its temperature after the coil had been off for at least a minute, I got a little shock. I put a metal rod across the ground strike ring and primary and there were a few sparks. Today, I caught it again. I checked between the primary and the ground ring and got 140v dc after about 2 minutes of being off, slowly dropping over the next few minutes. I checked the mmc and bus cap repeatedly and both were fully empty. This feels like my lack of electronics knowledge, but I can't figure out why it stores that much energy for that long after being discharged.
edit - I forgot a capacitor. I have a 2.2 uF mkp between negative bus and ground. Is this a likely culprit, and is it appropriate to put a discharge resistor across it? Thinking about a discharge resistor, I'm a little concerned about it failing. If it fails short, a ground strike would probably kill everything. This also made me think about the capacitor in the first place - as far as I know, its purpose is to couple a primary strike to ground, but does it not also couple ground strikes to the bus?

Ok, so I got my drsstc working, and now have no clue how to tune it properly. Specs: BSM150 full bridge (with excessive cooling) 340V bus .3uF mmc (2s6p cde940) rather fat secondary, 3.33:1 ud2.9+ with pulse skip almost exactly 50k secondary reactance at resonance (180kHz) coupling of .131 attached is a picture of the coil My questions is how do I optimize it for arc length and sound quality? I've seen a few coils with conservative ocd and very long on times/duty cycles getting huge arcs with pulse skip, but my current impression is that that's only feasible for low notes, making it unsuitable for music. So, how should I tune it? low current and high on times or vice versa, or is high current and on time feasible? And how should I determine the ocd? By guessing based on thermal dissipation? This seems like fairly basic information, but the tuning section of kaiser's guide is unfinished and I'm having trouble finding other resources. Any help or links to resources would be appreciated. edit: this is the best I've gotten so far: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KTiZVL3Kdm18simvhhEKExdP0c7ETTkH/view?usp=sharingThis is using TMax's midi stick with ocd at 300A, Vbus~100v, max on time 150us, max duty cycle 8% The ocd is the yellow light above the red one, and it's continually tripped here. The ocd similarly remains almost continually tripped for lower notes, but they sound strange, quiet, hardly any arcs, and they produce weird harmonics. I'm not sure what it is about the high notes that makes them and only them sound normal.

I'm trying to tune zvs on my tesla coil (bsm150 full bridge, 300A ocd, ud2.9), and the way I read to do this was to minimize ringing on the bridge output. Scoping the output got me the attached image, which seems off to me. Shouldn't it more or less resemble a square wave? The signals to the gates were all normal. Any ideas?
It looks like maybe the transistors are turning on too slowly? Which doesn't really make sense because the design is based on franzoli electronics' alphaDRs, and I used the same igbts and 5.1ohm gate resistors he did.

I'm hoping I can build the style of MMC where a few large capacitors are connected in series, as I'm planning to try high on times with pulse skipping and don't want to have problems with current. I can't find such capacitors anywhere. I've looked through all the ebay results for anything i could think to search, looked up part numbers, etc. Are they really that rare/expensive or am I not searching with the right terms?

I have a 24v power supply and a line filter, both of which have grounded housings. Should I connect these to my house ground, the coil ground, or leave them floating? Connecting them to the coil ground doesnt seem optimal, as it couples that to the house lines and neutral through the line filter(s)

I'm planning to build a small-medium drsstc not based on an existing design and I have a few questions What does a high/low impedance design actually mean? Is high impedance just more primary turns and smaller MMC? What effect does it have on function? Why is it recommended to do 1:5 ratio? Is there a clear benefit to doing that specific ratio or would it be about the same with 1:3 or 1:4? A design that works with the materials I have is 4.5in od secondary 15in tall with ~1240 turns which is a 1:3.33 ratio How far apart should the innermost turn of the primary coil be from the secondary? Are there any significant limits on on-time except thermal dissipation? Would it be acceptable to use relatively small bus capacitors in a voltage doubler with a large one across its output as opposed to 2 large ones in the doubler? Is the power drawn by a coil mainly a function of primary impedance vbus and on time?

I roughly followed loneocean's drsstc 3, and am having the same problem he described having with the gates of each igbt briefly switching polarity and then ringing while turning on. He described the solution to the problem being to lower the gate resistance. My gate resistors are currently 5.1ohm. Should I lower them, and to what value?
