The global semiconductor shortage...
« on: April 30, 2021, 06:53:06 PM »
I've heard about it delaying the making of cars on the news a lot but kind of thought it was just blown a bit out of proportion.

But now I realised that a lot of the stuff I usually buy on digikey is now getting low-stocked too.
And I can't seem to find the pic32 I use for everything anywhere anymore either. Estimated re-stocking date something in 2022  ::)

I'd guess that small businesses that rely on product sales are pretty much screwed by that right?
Have any of you guys been affected by it at all?

Hi,

I'm an automotive hardware prototype engineer in my dayjob and we notice the shortage quite a bit.
A lot of (even common) components, especially stuff like CAN transceivers are simply out of stock everywhere.
A lot of automotive stuff uses Renesas controllers which currently have 6 Months of delivery time and you need to buy at least 100 or even 1000 for them to sell you some.
It's quite crazy and my guess would be that it might even get a little bit worse, since all the manufacturers sold their stock and need to produce new stuff now.

Another interesting effect is the time, for which stuff is available, if I search components today and send my list to the ordering department, they will come back to me the same day with parts that are unavailable.

A few days ago, I read that some material for SMD resistors is currently unavailable so we might even get a shortage of resistors, which just blows my mind.  :o

The good thing for hobbyist is, that most older style and through hole componenst wont really be affected much, since they are less needed by the big players.

Greetings,
Michael

I'm wondering if a part of this is because some companies have started hoarding the parts they need now instead of buying the usual quantity. Even I bought 4x the usual amount because I don't want to be left without microcontrollers for my projects for a year or so.

But a resistor shortage would be totally crazy :P

I think there are probably some scripts running on quite a few company's servers just so they can order stuff immediately when it's available again :P

I haven't seen any large scale scalping though. So it seems like stuff is at least being used and not bought to sell on at twice the price like a lot of PC hardware these days.

I'm having a similar experience as Da_Stier (also automotive hardware, though thankfully without too many constraints as to using auto qualified parts). Sucks big time, am having to change parts in the middle of a design because the things I chose 2 weeks ago due to good availability are now unobtainium.

That's the worst thing about it, it is very hard to impossible to finish something if your design takes a few weeks to finish.
Had the exact same effect on CAN drivers.
Changed them in mid design to a series with a few pin compatible devices from different manufactures. three weeks later all of them were sold out everywhere with leads times of 32 weeks.

Greetings,
Michael
