Would this be about right or not.
« on: April 06, 2019, 01:42:26 PM »
I am shooting for a coil secondary that will have 24 inchs of 24awg  wire. My wire is .0223in  so to get 24 inches i will need about 1075 turns. My question is some sites say shoot for 800 turns, some say 800 to 1000. Will this be ok at 1075 turn

Thanks to all the reply's. The secondary is 6 to 6 1/2 inches. I read others say only use 22 awg, but I already ordered 24.

Thanks for the charts also

I made mine with 1400 turns of 32 wire. It didn't work very well. Just small almost invisible sparks. There is too much impedance on the coil. A lot of wire resistance plus a lot of inductance. I removed all wire and I plan to use 26 or maybe 24 or 22 awg next time. Too much turns is not good as sometimes we may think. You would get more voltage, but the impedance eats it all.

Whats is the tube diameter?

A lot of wire resistance plus a lot of inductance.
Actually, inductance doesn't matter on the secondary, because it is resonant, so XL = 0 R

And for the coil, take a look at this table https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TkpvH7e5geHCIhB_Gr3egwL_THJYqjZIU5INoo54nD4/edit#gid=482293335

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as it's in a sensible range, which ~1000 turns sounds it is.

This is my first coil. Thanks

Could you please provide some more information?

What is your secondary diameter? What resonant frequency are you aiming for?

Regarding my table of secondary specifications, green is just a safe choice, yellow will work just fine and red is for experiments where you want to explore the outer bounds of "normal" :)

The diameter is 6ish got the caps (942C20P15K-F - 150nF ), epoxy and the 24 awg wire coming Friday. Been wanting to do this for over 30 years.

Sounds reassuring, thanks. Been reading for over 30 years, now I find when I actually want to do it, I don't know nothing. :) It's the little details.

Do not worry about 24 vs. 22 AWG, you have a solid design that pings in at some 42,000 impedance, just shy of the "magic" 50k that will almost always give good performance. So now that you know its on the lower side, you can design your spark gap to be as aggressive as possible to deliver high and fast peak currents, because your coil is not designed for slow pulses (high impedance)

Looking forward to see your results and please add some pictures as you build things :) Seeing a 30 year old dream come true is great!

Thank you much, hear is a picture of the secondary, I plan on winding it tonight and then epoxy it tomorrow. I will post back the epoxy job when it is finished.

Thank all who responded, can't wait to get this underway.  Ps, I am winding 24 inches but I have enough for more, would 24.9 be alright.
