Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Re: Drsstc feedback startup
« on: September 20, 2023, 04:39:36 PM »
Hello, I made a huge discovery, the whole thing works fine when I touch the 2nd or 3rd pin of the AD8561ANZ  ultra fast comparator that I used instead of the lt1001 with the tip of a oscilloscope probe
Now I am confused as to why does this solve the problem and what should I change on the board to make it work by itself
With red is where I probed and it stared working (the ground lead was not connected to anything)

Sadly I am sure the gdt is proper ferrite, I have used this type of core in my 200khz sstc and it was fine, here is a link of it
https://www.tme.eu/ro/details/b64290l0618x830/miezuri-de-ferita/epcos/
Also, I think the output returning to 0 was some kind of weird glitch with that cheap oscilloscope, my trusty analog scope doesn't show it falling, but staying in the middle

Not if you calculate it correctly as I linked to in the other thread.
I am very sorry if my physics or mathematics skills are lacking :))) the resonant freq is 122khz with a 3.808 uH primary coil inductance
I have run the calculations and a 1uF capacitor will have 1.305 Ohms of reactance but the frequency comes at around 0.08164 kHz, will this work?
Also, another beginner question, what should the voltage rating of those caps be? Can I get away with 630v?

Oh, I see, but I have one more question, when adding the DC blocking caps does their capacity add up to the MMC?

Do you have a bleed resistor pulling half-bridge output low?  Something is causing output to end up at 0V after enable pulse ends.
Looks like Vbus is 60V for this scope capture.  Is that accurate?  Is Vbus 60V for the current transformer output capture too?
This horrible thing I drew is the schematic of the bridge, I dont use any bleed resistor except on the bus capacitor

and this is how I connected the probe

This is how I connected and measured the feedback transformer with a 120khz signal from a 555 timer fed in the feedback connector, the variac was set to 50v ac

With no feedback transformer/signal generator, this is the startup pulse that I can measure on the gates of the igbt, is this normal?

And I dont think the gdt is the problem because with external feedback, the circuit didnt blow at 170vac input and also no real heating, at some point I was even tripping the ocd
I really dont know what to do, but for a last resort can I run the coil based on the signal generator and ditch primary feedback, keeping in mind the ocd does still work?

I mean the output is almost high and has just a short off time, kinda like a high duty cycle, and on the internet I saw quite the opposite, a short positive pulse, not a short gnd pulse like mine, I really don't know, but the circuit isn't able to start it's oscillation from the current transformer

Some quick scope shots, this is the halfbridge output working when the driver is fed a signal
I fed it 170 vac on the bus at some point and nothing blew up so the halfbridge is switching right

This is the feedback transformer loaded on a 51ohm burden resistor and it looks good  ???

but the really strange output is this "starting pulse" that I measured on the gdt when it has no feedback connected, to me it looks inverted, how is this possible?

Hello, it may sound like a stupid question, but do I need to have my secondary coil in place for my ud2.7c to be able to pick up the feedback signal from the primary coil?
Currently my driver works fine only when it is fed a 120khz square wave, and the feedback transformer when loaded with a 51ohm burden resistor appears on the oscilloscope

10
Hello, I have resumed building my first drsstc and I tried understanding the UD schematic but ultimately failed to understand which jumper should be bridged.
I plan on using all the features, the phase lead, ocd, uvlo so I don't want to accidentally disable something.
The fiber optic receiver will be an HFBR2412
Can someone with experience tell me what they bridged and what not?

11
Hello, recently I had a strange idea as I need a high voltage source to use in some experiments, would it be possible to solder a hv silicone wire to the output of the secondary coil and have the arcs come out of the other end of the wire? If its not possible with a class e tesla coil, would other types work?

As YSPACE Labs said, the lightbulb is probably the safest bet and you also end up with a dim bulb tester for other electronics  ;D, but if you want something adjustable there are some Soviet Rheostats, basically 200-300w potentiometers.
A small hair dryer heating element can also be used, but you might have to adjust the number of turns accordingly to the resistance you wish to obtain. Good luck  ;)

Transformer (Ferrite Core) / Re: Flyback winding question
« on: April 02, 2023, 07:54:47 PM »
I would like to make a small hv ac power supply (use it as a normal tv flyback) just for playing with arcs or maybe a multiplier in the future, if I would get 3 cm arcs I would be very happy  ;D but regarding the gap, should I cover one contact point with a piece of tape?

Transformer (Ferrite Core) / Flyback winding question
« on: April 02, 2023, 04:45:00 PM »
Hello, I got hold of this pair of E type ferrite cores from an old tv main board (it's not from the line flyback transformer that drives the crt)
My question is, can I rewind this transformer like I drawn in the picture? The gap is only in the middle, if I rewind it like I shown, should I add a layer of tape between one of the sides like in a traditional crt flyback?

Electronic Circuits / Re: More induction heating
« on: March 04, 2023, 01:18:04 PM »
Hello, I have a suggestion for the power supply, by far the cheapest power supply that will output 200-300w at 12V with no problem are old computer ATX power supplies. You can get one at a second hand market for very cheap (most don't cost more than 5-10 dollars) or even for free  ;D
A traditional full bridge rectifier power supply will require huge capacitors that come at a big price if you don't have them already, run a simulation on https://www.circuitlab.com/ and it will plot out for you the voltage and ripple.

16
Hello, I have gathered all the necessary components to finally assemble this beauty of a driver  ;D but i encountered 2 problems, I am unable to source locally some 4.7uf non polarized capacitors used in the inverter that drives the gdt (C24 and C28) and the resistors that connect to the fb and ocd transformers.  :-\

My question is, can I get away with a capacity of just 2uF (I have a few 1uF 63v film capacitors that I can solder in parallel in the pcb hole) as it doesn't seem to have a vital role in the circuit (My guess is that they only provide the extra power needed when switching) ?
Also, apparently no electronics shop sources 5.1 Ohm (R11) or 51 Ohm (R3) resistors, so I ended up buying 4.7 Ohm and 47 Ohm resistors accordingly, I will be okay with those values as long as I wind the feedback cores accordingly to those new values, right?
Thank you for your time, reader and I am sorry if my questions are too basic but I am scared to destroy expensive components  ;D

Hello, this is their datasheet that I found on the manufacturers website, I chose to buy this capacitor for its peak rating of 1500 amps and fast rise voltage 3500 v/us I think

Thank you so much for the help, sadly I can't implement the last idea of a split mmc as I already have a big resonance capacitor (I took inspiration from Franzoli Electronics last small DRSSTC)
I think i will buy a few WIMA film capacitors to use them as snubbers to suppress the spikes

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Inverter question
« on: February 05, 2023, 05:42:44 PM »
Hello, I am starting to work on my first Drsstc :)
I plan to use an half bridge inverter with a single BSM150GB60DLC IGBT module so I started looking at different schematics and I have a question about capacitors C4 and C5/
Are they really needed? Because in full bridge inverter schematics that I saw, similar capacitors were not found.
Also, I plan to run the OCD set at about 300-350A, I dont know if this information helps, but I want to give as many details as I can.
Thank you for your time, dear reader  ;D

What IS the goal of this project?  That is: --- why are you making sparks?

I need to ignite Methanol, Ether or Gasoline for a pulse jet.
Hello, I am not an expert but what I can say is that you will have a way easier time with using a flyback transformer from an old tv ( you can program the arduino so that when it is triggered, to output a 15-20khz square wave signal to a small bjt that will drive the gate of a mosfet of your choice (preferably something like an irfp 250/260n) connected to a 8 turn primary coil wound on the ferrite core)
For example, here is a video I found on youtube with an arduino driven flyback transformer
I am getting 5cm arcs from my irfp260n flyback transformer with a 12V power supply and it doesnt get hot with a good heatsink
