Hello all,

Recently I have began work on a large tesla coil and as it is finally working I though I would make a post.

Specs:
2x CM400
8x .5uf 2000v GTO snubber MMC
8x 8600uf 450v DC bus capacitors (4 parallel 2 in series)
6" by 34" secondary wound with 28awg wire
ring topload made with PEK plumbing line
3/8" primary coil
ud2.7 (I have a UD3 that will go in eventually but for testing the ud2.7 is easier)
all water cooled
Laminated bus bars (laser cut acrylic)

Will make another post when I do a full power test in the coming days.

Voltage Multipliers / Re: Cockroft-walton resistors
« on: March 13, 2023, 10:41:49 PM »
Ive sent the seller a couple messages to no avail, they have yet to respond.

It doesn't fill me with confidence but I figure they will probably ship it if I buy (which I wont do without rating) and if they dont ebay will refund.

Voltage Multipliers / Cockroft-walton resistors
« on: March 13, 2023, 05:59:40 PM »
Hello all,

I have some questions about a curious listing I found on ebay that appear to be perfect for my voltage multiplier.

The only info is this photo

The seller lists them as 40w but gives no indication to their resistance or other specs, and messaging resulted in no response.

If anybody has ideas on the ratings of these resistors (if they even are resistors) let me know!

Thanks so much,
Davis

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Re: 160mm DRSSTC project

Hey,

Im not sure if theres a better way to do this but i would be happy to sell you 2 cm300dy-24h bricks for nearly half that price, I can confirm they are genuine as well.

Most bricks on ebay will be genuine but make sure they are functional and also not in too poor condition.

Kindest regards,
Davis

Hello all,

I am interested in buying some capacitors fit for a CW Cockcroft Walton multiplier stack. Input voltage will be around 50kv from a pretty big ferrite transformer. Looking to use about 6 stages (24 total capacitors). Frequency will be 80-150Khz. Screw terminals or axial leads work fine, although I would like to stay away from tab/hockey puck style caps.

Would like to trade, I have a wide variety of high power silicon (300-400a 600-1200v bricks). I also have lots of Scintillating crystals and also some decent sized electrolytic capacitors (5000uf if I remember correctly).

Also happy to pay via paypal or a similar service.

Thanks so much,
Davis

Hello all,

I have just gotten my large induction heater functioning. I am slightly confused after inspecting the inverter output and tank circuit voltage on my oscilloscope. It appears that the tank voltage is double the frequency as my inverter output, and about 45* out of phase? any help interpreting this would be appreciated, I cannot make sense of it.

kindest regards,
Davis

Large change to stuff that I am selling,

Variac has sold, as well as all the induction heater capacitors and electrolytics.

I no longer am selling my cm400 bricks although I still have many other types of IGBT’s available. I also have a large number of MPK snubber caps that I am now selling.

Some have brought up shipping, and while I maintain the belief that USPS flat rate is the best option within the USA, I’m happy to comply with the buyer on shipping requests.

Kindest regards,
Davis.

Electronic Circuits / Re: Help with PLL induction heater driver
« on: September 26, 2022, 04:04:11 PM »
Hello,

Thank you very much for the advice. I will add means of tank power regulation in the Rev 2 board, luckily I am using some even more powerful bricks (400a 1200v) with lots of protection  ;).

I have had the boards manufactured by JLC PCB (somehow cheaper then buying components separately!) after lots of layout changes and fixes, although I will definitely work on the capacitor sense system for next time.

For the next revision I might be replacing the 4046 chip with either a microprocessor (makes regulation easy with pulse skipping) or any other PLL chip. I was using the 4046 chip simply since there is a good deal of information out there on it.

As for layout issues, hopefully I didn't make them worse (images below), and again for next time I will add some decoupling chips and fix some routing errors.

Thank you so much for your help, will be posting pictures of the finished tank circuit soon!

Induction heater is for general hobby use, melting an forging and whatnot.

Frequency range will be around 50-100khz, output power goal is around 15-20kw (will send photos of the inverter and other things shortly).

re did the design with SMD components and better component choice in general, attached are photos of the circuit and (poorly) routed PCB. This was my first time routing traces so I hope I didn't botch it too badly.

Thanks so much, Davis.

Electronic Circuits / Help with PLL induction heater driver
« on: September 12, 2022, 02:28:17 AM »
Hello all,

I have been working on my induction heater and have been recently working on the driver. I have modified The Backyard Scientists design (with permission) and have added a full bridge and ucc type driver for ease of use (nearly a copy of the UD type tesla coil driver power sections as it is a tried and true circuit) If anyone could look over the (awful) schematic and let me know if I made and stupid mistakes before I have them fabricated that would be much appreciated!

thanks so much, Davis.

Not sure if it would be best to edit the post or to add a reply, hopefully this works.

I am now also selling my variac as I found a better replacement.

Selling for 20$, it is 12 amp (I believe). It's in a wooden box with 2 switches (power to the transformer and power to outlets) and a dual outlet.

Will figure out shipping on a case by case. Price is always negotiable.

kindest regards, Davis

Hello all,

I am cleaning out my lab and have about 10 large (9600uf 450v) electrolytic caps all in fairly good condition. I would prefer to sell them for about 20$ a piece although this is extremely negotiable. SOLD

I also have a large selection of IGBT bricks from cm400 to some relatively high speed bricks that are good for induction heating and even some one that work nicely in a QCW coil. If you are interested message me about part numbers and quantities. (Expect around 20$ per brick as well unless a better price can be found on eBay in which case I will lower the price to a couple below that)

I have some other more specialized things as well like cemet 700v 1000arms induction heater capacitors. (50$ a piece, think I have 2 up for grabs, again price is negotiable) SOLD

If you are looking for power electronic components please message me, happy to ship worldwide given that the buyer pays for shipping, although expect shipping to be a good amount for non USA forum users as all the components are quite heavy. Discounts if you buy more then one thing!

Kindest regards, Davis.

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Tophat QCW 1
« on: January 07, 2022, 02:27:35 AM »
Finally finished my qcw! Here are some specs and some photos,

-UD3 driver (Psoc5 version)
Full bridge of FP7G75US60igbt’s with 1.5uf 2kv snubber capacitors
-single 6500uf dc bus capacitor (originally used a single 2200uf 450v capacitor but the voltage drop
was so much that it hindered performance)
-4-10nf mmc (taking Steve wards advice I am tuning via the mmc instead of the primary, I find this to be much cleaner)
-200mm tall 105mm wide secondary wound with 36awg wire (resonant frequency of 144khz)
-8 turn 10awg primary coil (was toroidal orginally but had to remove turns in the end)
-gdt’s and feedback transformer are run of the mill blue cores, Whatever was cheapest on arrow when I ordered

16
Hello all!

I recently got my QCWDRSSTC working and since the secondary has a relatively low resonant frequency the sparks are very branchy. I was recently testing and something happened that I haven’t seen before, the coil sparked, the spark looped back around, hit the secondary about midway down, and then arced over to the primary. I was wondering if there was any way to prevent this? I’m wary of doing a strike rails because the topload is pretty close to the top of the primary. Photos attached.

Sell / Buy / Trade / WTS: small secondary coils
« on: January 03, 2022, 05:38:08 PM »
Hello,

I made 3 secondary coils for my QCW project but as it would turn out they are a bit under my needed resonant frequency. I would love to sell them to someone preferably in the US For material cost as I don’t have a use for them and don’t want to throw them out (about 7$ each plus shipping). They are 9” tall 4” wide and have about 2000t (36awg wire) and they all have varying amounts of varnish. Fair warning they all have some overlaps as the wire is very thin.

Thanks so much, Davis.

18
Ah that makes complete sense, this is running on my QCW prototype so the primary circuit has quite high impedance. Thanks for the help and sorry I didn’t think of that!

19
Awesome I’m glad to see this project is still active! I was messing around with a smaller coil today and was having some trouble playing songs, it seems that higher frequency notes got decreased in volume to the point where they were nearly 1/10th of the lower notes? Is this something silly that I’m missing in software? Thanks so much and I’m excited to see how this stick will develop even more in the future!

Thanks so much, Davis.

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / Re: Next Gen DRSSTC
« on: November 21, 2021, 06:16:06 PM »
Hello,
Quote
The UD3s are playing the frames by the timecode. To get it over multiple control computers working the master sends his time to all slaves every 500ms. The slaves are calculating a offset (which get smoothed to get rid of latency jitter) to their time and are sending the corrected time to their UD3 which is syncing to this time (the master time). I need to measure the timing differences but it sounds good.

I had some confusion over this, is there one master computer using the others as slaves, and then each slave is paired with a ud3? Or is one computer with a master ud3 using the others as salves (with the other computers being used as aux USB ports?)

Thanks so much! The ud3 looks amazing
