How to keep the secondary coil from tipping over?
« on: March 12, 2018, 12:37:52 AM »
Hello,

I know this is kind of a prosaic question, but how do you mount your secondary coil tube on the bottom?  It is a tall and potentially top-heavy.  When I used a 4" PVC for my last coil, I used a PVC flange screwed to the top table, and then the PVC tube slipped over that and that is quite secure.  For my next coil, I am using a 6" PVC pipe and as far I can tell, I can not find any flanges except for a high price.

I am trying to find something not made out of metal so that the eddy current doesn't heat the metal rather than generating a current in the coil.   I looked from some plastic L brackets and have not found anything sufficiently stout to not crack when the PVC pipe is pushed on a little.   I would like to wind the coil, but want to make sure enough space is left at the bottom for mounting.

See if you can find a hardware store that has nylon bolts and nuts to pass thru the endcap. Three or four should do.

I just 3d modelled my own adapter. However I used metal bolts but as @Grayf and mads in my thread mentions that you can use nylon bolts and nuts.

Have a look at my build here: https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=77.0

Maybe spam epoxy?

For my 160mm (~6") coil I used PVC pipe end caps with M12 (~1/2") nylon bolts. I obtained them from a components distributor who specialised in plastic hardware, and were as big as I could buy without paying crazy money. Wish I'd bought a few more for future projects!

For my DRSSTC1 I used the primary supports to also hold the secondary coil in place, I just removed some of the acrylic that would cover the secondary windings, so it was just kept in place by a snug fit around the bottom of the secondary coil.

For DRSSTC3 it was a whole other story as the secondary coil is around 50 kg by itself, so we made a sturdy plastic base with a bolt and split assembly for fast and easy setup/packing down. Works great :)

Thanks for the detailed response, Mads.  I bought a couple of end caps.  One will be for the base, the other to go on top to have a screw through it so I can screw on the topload.  I am going to have a small screw post terminal on the bottom of the topload so I can disconnect it from the wire that connects it to the ground/strike ring.

I used a pvc thing called "anti infiltration flange". I found this things at home construction stores. Cheap stuff... I could not find cheap acrylic, which would look a lot better.

Here is how it is used, it guides the water that was going around the tube to inside of it again.

The one I got looks just like this one.

Maybe you can find something like that near you. I forgot to mention, but they are only available for 100mm pvc pipes here. Or 4 inches.
