General Chat / Re: Rocket engine questions
« on: April 30, 2021, 02:43:31 AM »
I'm designing a liquid/gas rocket
I'm thinking about building a protype from mild steel

So... These sentences are exactly what we would read on a forum, just prior to reading news headlines the next day:

"Amateur rocket enthusiast tragically dies in explosion in garage"

Seriously, Mr. hobbyist-builder-guy (plasma): Don't go there. Don't do it. You clearly don't understand the dangers involved with building rocket engines, let alone a damn liquid engine. Just because you're good at making other things and proficient in welding, is no excuse to try and build a goddamned liquid propellant rocket engine.  You cannot do that successfully without years and years and years of science and engineering education and background, which you clearly don't possess since you're asking this in an electronics forum... A liquid-propellant engine is a BOMB, get it? it's literally a continuously-exploding, self-detonating BOMB; that's how it provides the literally-explosive-force required to accelerate huge massive objects against Earth's gravity.

If you were TRULY interested in rocketry, you would join a local model-rocketry club (either Tripoli or NAR if you're American) and start small. Then you eventually move up in engine size, until you want to earn your high-power rocketry certifications, and then you can eventually, build and launch up to size O rocket motors, after which, you'll need FAA clearance to launch anything bigger.
Everything up to that point, is still SOLID-PROPELLANT... Because Liquid is STILL, TOO DAMN COMPLEX for it to be a viable solution to most people. There are even legitimate orbital rockets which use solid propellant engines...
So please, pull your head out of your ass, and think about your safety....
Just accept that it's something you should NOT attempt, no matter how deliciously-badass it looks and sounds...

Sorry about the rant and lecturing you... but, believe it or not, PEOPLE HAVE DIED, trying to do exactly what you said you're trying to do.
You're welcome for saving your life. 'nuff said...

**cross-post from the Facebook group 'TESLA COILS are BOSS' ...
Working on my first DRSSTC, voltage-doubler half bridge, CM200 coil, very, very similar to Gao Guangyan's DRSSTC-2 (shoutout Loneoceans Ggy). Planning on a bus voltage of about 396 VDC (from 140V variac). I might also try using my 208/240V transformer to step up the input from 140VAC to 161VAC, which would give me a bus voltage of about 457 VDC...

Currently test-fitting components of the bridge, and I have a few questions:

Q1.
I am wondering if my DC bus bars might be too close together.
The closest point measures 0.18" or 4.6mm between the positive and negative DC bus bars.
Should I shave them down a little to increase the gap?

Q2.
In Guangyan's design, a 10k-Ohm resistor is connected across the tank circuit (bridge output), to drain remaining MMC charge before the next pulse.
He used a nice ceramic wirewound resistor. I have a cheap wirewound resistor with an aluminum heatsink.
I was planning on mounting it straight to the IGBT heatsink, so it would be RF-grounded. However, I am concerned that this may be dangerous, as the resistor leads are only 0.18" from the edge of the resistor's heatsink (coincidentally the same distance between the bus bars).
Is this a real danger to have the primary/mmc leads so close to RF-ground?
I could easily insulate it with plastic cutting-board and nylon screws to leave the heatsink floating.

Q3.
Considering the "general wiring scheme" put forth by Steve Ward, which is now a standard. I had been aware that the negative DC Bus rail is coupled to RF ground through a 100nF cap, so when I ordered my MMC caps (942c20p15k), I included one extra to use for this purpose, but I now realize that .15uF might be a problem, since it's not the specified .1uF standard.
My other problem... I had not noticed that Steve's "general wiring scheme, as well as Mad's "DRSSTC GROUNDING" schematic (shoutout Mads Lundbæk Barnkob), both show a second 100nF cap placed across the DC Bus terminals. This part, I have yet to acquire.
What purpose does this cap serve? (Wouldn't the IGBT snubber already fulfill this duty?)
Does it need to match the value of the RF-ground-coupling capacitor?
Can someone please recommend good caps to use here, cheaper than Cornell Dubilier? (I'd like to save my extra MMC cap as a replacement part.)

Thank you all!

1. For primary & MMC connection to the bridge output terminals, From "C2E1" to Bus Cap center-tap, should primary come come first, or should MMC come first, or does it not matter at all? Both from a practical viewpoint, and an analytical viewpoint, if possible please. I know it seems like it shouldn't matter because they're in series, but... y'never know, y'know?...  I always end up learning new things that I didn't know before!  ;)

2. For the Mains connection to the DC Bus-Cap Center-Tap, Should I connect the Neutral, or Hot?

3. I will save further questions questions for a later time, after I feel satisfied about the first two.
Mostly, because I'm tired and need to study tomorrow. Got my first Circuits exam on Thursday!

4
adding beafy varistors from the primary to ground should increase robustness and a decent strike rail to ground is common practice hear

MOV's in addition to the capacitor? and in parallel, I'm assuming?

Grounded strike rail is a certainty! It sure comes in handy on my spark-gap coil: youtu.be/3d4ZDvA5Kcc

5
Coupling the non-MMC end of the primary would put a significant load on the bridge - take a look at the impedance of the typical coupling caps (e.g. 0.1uF) at the switching frequency. I suspect it would also cause EMI and safety issues, as any current through this capacitor would have to flow via the mains wiring to wherever the earth-neutral bond point is.

Given that the issue doesn't seem to be the strike current (on the order of a few amps only) flowing through the igbts (which have anti parallel diodes included to provide a path when off) but was more about voltage stress between the bridge and heatsink (ground) when hit, the standard method seems to do the trick.
Thank you. I'm most likely going with the negative rail.

6
OK. So we are all familiar with the standard method of primary-strike protection, that is, connecting the RF-ground to the negative DC Bus via capacitive-coupling...
I have come to the realization, that this does NOT make sense.

If a streamer strikes your primary coil, the streamer-current must travel through one/both of your low-side IGBT's (full bridge), or through your low-side IGBT and/or Bus Capacitor (half bridge) to get from the Primary coil to the -Vbus rail.

Why is it not instead the standard to capacitively-couple the RF-ground directly to the Primary Coil? (a.k.a. the center-point, between high-side and low-side IGBT's)
This would keep the high-energy current from traveling through the semiconductor.

Are my assumptions here correct? If there is any logical reasoning behind the standard grounding-scheme (other than copying Steve Ward), then can someone please educate me? ???

Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla coils (DRSSTC) / UD 2.5 Schematic?
« on: February 05, 2019, 06:06:05 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have a UD 2.5 which I'm using to build my first DRSSTC. The problem is, nowhere can I find a schematic for this damn driver...

On Goodchild's website, the schematic download link doesn't work.  http://www.goodchildengineering.com/tech-design-blog/ud2-5

The links/files that people posted in the 4hv thread, are missing and/or non-existent. https://4hv.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?p=14&id=152849

I am hoping that someone may have saved it long ago, back when the links (probably) worked.

Any help and/or related files would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: SSTC Audio Interrupter Issues
« on: January 28, 2019, 05:48:53 PM »
Hello!
I am sorry, but my knowledge in electronics is quite limited... (However, I have finally began my first semester of classes after changing my Major to Electrical Engineering. I was previously a Chemistry Major ::) So, I may be able to help within the next year or two... Hahahaha)

If it helps at all, my op-amp is a UA741CN and my transistors are 2N3904.
I was using a 9-volt battery originally, but I switched to using a small dc-dc converter to supply the 9V.
The interrupter still works great to this day, however thinking about it, I've never touched any of the resistors to see if they get warm... I may have time later today or another day this week to try that out.
I apologise for my lack of usefulness in your pursuit of troubleshooting the issue. I'm sure that Mads Barnkob will also give his input (eventually ;)), as he's pretty good about replying to everyone's posts.

10
Sorry, my last comment was kind of condescending...  ::)

I just right-now read something in Mads' DRSSTC design-guide that clears this up for me. He said this in regards to the snubber:

"The overall power dissipation is however very low due to the very low duty cycles used in a DRSSTC and it is not necessary to take extra precautions in regard to RMS current if IGBT snubber capacitors mounted directly on the terminals are used."

11
This seems to me to be very, very impressive... but then again I don't know that much! ;D
I am really surprised that nobody else has replied yet!

I really really like how all of the control i/o pins are all along the same edge at the back end, and the fiber input and indicator LEDs are on the same side, facing you. Looks like it was really well thought-out.
Great job!

12
Thanks sjsimmo,
I guess, as long as they can't do more harm than good, I may as well add the tvs just to be on the safe side... although I am planning my bus layout to be just as compact as Gao's.

The most important thing for snubbers is their peak current rating.
So, uh... what about their peak current rating?  ???

13
Hi
So I'm currently designing my first DRSSTC. I'm aiming for similar specifications to loneoceans' DRSSTC-2 (http://www.loneoceans.com/labs/drsstc2/). I have been referencing his page as much as I can, however it's quite difficult without a schematic. Looking at other schematics everywhere I can find, still, there is nothing that gives all the answers to things I don't understand.

1. First thing that's bugging me, is that most sources recommend using TVS diodes across the Collector and Emitter of each IGBT, but from his pictures, it looks like Gao chose not to include them in his bridge design. Is it just not important for for half-bridge modules? I know there are already diodes inside, so...
2. Second thing, Does the voltage rating of the Snubber capacitor need to be so high? Gao is using 2000V 1uF, but that is somewhat hard to find at a good price... but 1200V is easy to find and more affordable... Though the price differences are not that big, I'm just trying to save a few bucks where ever I can.
*(3.) additional question at bottom of my post.

That's pretty much it for now... just want to be certain about the items in my Digikey shopping-cart before I checkout  ;D

In the shopping cart:
Fiber TX/RX and cable, epcos "T38 material" ferrite cores (for fb & ocd), heatsink, 1.5KE33CA for gates

I already own:
UD-2.5, (1x)CM200DU-24H, (10x)942C20P15K-F (9 for MMC, 1 for pri. strike protection),
Magnetics 0J43813TC (J material) for GDT, ...(can't think of everything right now)...

Planning to purchase in near future (or, add to shopping cart):
cheap 24v SMPS, ..... , other things, ....

I plan to finalize the major component choices/purchases and have a clear-cut design plan, before I attempt to build anything.
The build will go like this:
Build/install all circuitry in base/enclosure --> Build/install Secondary & toroid --> Build/install Primary
(I want to have the secondary installed first so that I can measure it's Fres at the correct height)

Gao designed his secondary with 34awg on a 3.5" form, 13" length, giving a Fres of 122 kHz. I have found through JavaTC simulation, that if I wind 32awg on a 4.5" form, with the same length of 13", gives me nearly the same Fres, about 122.7 kHz. So as far as I can tell, this will be a much better choice, for peace of mind, not requiring the dreadfully-thin 34awg.
*(3.) Gao's secondary frequency drops to about 106 kHz under spark load, and tuned his primary to account for such; with my proposed secondary, can I expect the same % F drop?

Thank you very, very much.

14
And the final frequency it runs at best performance is 145 kHz.
How did you determine that?

Electronic Circuits / Re: Variable Frequency Drive?

Gate drive would not be possible via transformers without more complex circuitry - VFD will not be 50% duty cycle like a SSTC.

Other than that the concept is reasonably similar - both are hard switching half bridges (3 of them in the case of a VFD).
Any idea what kind of more-complex circuitry? I would have guessed maybe just a different ic chip for an interrupter, but in this case it would be attached to the enable-pin of UCCs, so technically I guess you could call it an "enabler" instead, haha.
Also I'm only really interested in driving a single phase motor.

As for Mads' comment, the thing that I don't know how to do is create a waveform like those second two, where there's multiple positive pulses then multiple negative pulses. Is there a special IC chip that performs this function? That is where I am lost

Hi all,
After building a half-bridge sstc (and after reading a little bit about VFDs), I feel like I could potentially build the same circuit (half bridge) with a few modifications, to use as a VFD to power AC induction-motors with full speed control.

Any feedback/suggestions of what modifications the circuit would need? ( I'm fairly certain that I don't need to run off of a feedback-loop like the sstc)

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: Attempting the Kaizer sstc II
« on: July 08, 2017, 09:27:10 AM »

It's running pretty well.. except that I've run into this issue where there will be sparks at the tip of my antenna at times. Anything that should be done?

that was also happening on my coil (I can now see its very common, from Mads' and oneKone's replies) . It never seemed to do any harm, but I still did few things like: i curled the tip of the antenna into a loop to make it nice and round, then covered the whole thing in kapton tape because it was just bare 12 awg copper wire. but there was still corona through the kapton tape, so ultimately, I ended up just adjusting the distance of the antenna until the sparks didn't occur anymore. but that also reduced the actual output of the coil a little bit also, so you pretty much just take the good with the bad

Organic  :)
Whoah thats awesome! I'm actually, an SI-leader for organic chemistry at my school...

I have some enamelled 0.5mm wire should I use that instead or stick with Ethernet wire.

When I was trying different GDT winding methods, a couple times I tried I using magnet-wire. The insulation is so fragile, that just the process of winding it on the core actually scraped some insulation off the wire, and I ended up getting arcing between wires, and they were little purple sparks. So there must have been a high voltage induced in the GDT windings I think. So from that point on I vowed to always use wire with real insulation, and I just spent the money to buy a small roll of cat5 from home depot. It was 24awg solid core,
Which works good, and I even recently bought another roll but with stranded wire, so I can use that for all sorts of stuff too. (I highly recommend the Ethernet wire. It gives you 4 different pairs of wire and they're already in twisted-pairs AND they're already all color-coded differently for you) it is worth the small investment, then you will also have that wire to use for routing signals and/or power for anything else you want.

Solid State Tesla Coils (SSTC) / Re: Help with secondary-feedback?
« on: June 28, 2017, 09:53:38 PM »
Leaving the filter capacitor out from the output of the hex Schmidt inverters could be a potential problem, that induced noise at higher powers is enough to knock the circuit out of order.

A current transformer should have a burden resistor, else you do not have a voltage across its output, just a current across the diode, which then maybe works from a voltage drop point of view and can activate the input of the IC, but that should really be made correct with a resistor in my opinion.

Secondary base current is possibly around 50 mA and up to max 1 A, I am really guessing a little bit here, not completely sure how much it is in a small coil, so you have to design the CT and burden resistor to provide enough feedback for the inverter input to switch properly.

It could also be that you saturate the CT core, is there a difference between continues wave mode, audio interruption or normal interruption from what voltage level it stops working?
So, I tried the .1nF filter cap and that worked, pretty much. I can still get it to cut-out like it did before by adjusting to the position of the primary on the secondary. It works flawlessly when the primary is less coupled and starts to cut out with higher coupling. I am assuming then that too much current flowing through the secondary is causing the "cutting-out" to happen somehow.
Also there is this effect (at the proper coupling) where the output is very similar to a "ramped" type of tesla coil, with single, non-branched sparks that are much quieter than normal ones. I took a video of it you can see here: https://goo.gl/photos/ayWtdxZWsgqYksEi6

Also, I tried the resistor again after the filter cap worked, but there was no significant change that I noticed, other than when turning up the variac, I wouldn't get any spark until 25v, but before I would start to see spark output somewhere between 5 to 10 volts.
