SKM100 Mini DRSSTC
« on: June 09, 2021, 12:39:09 AM »
Well after some small grief and a fair amount of learning my mini DRSSTC is basically done. The design is modeled after OneKone's SKM100.
After an initial scare (secondary flashover) I increased the spacing between primary and secondary. I also lowered the operating frequency a
bit to make it easier on the IGBJT's. I have not been able to fully test the output since it is getting dark later and I go to bed early. Inside it
arcs to the ceiling like crazy at about 64cm.

I also spent some though time decorating the coil and this is what I came up with,

There are no radical innovations in this coil. I did think of a nice way of easily adjusting the coupling using a plastic plumbing support from
the hardware store. I have not seen anyone post this idea but I doubt that it is new. All the bolts are nylon to avoid induction heating.

The plumbing fixture has a coarse plastic thread that allows about 4cm of adjustment. It made it very easy to try different couplings, just
remove the secondary ground wire, turn the entire toroid/secondary assembly to move it up or down relative to the primary. The fit of the
thread was pretty loose so I put in a couple of layers of teflon tape to make it tighter. I'm sure that a search could find bigger fitting
with closer tolerances, but for ~20$ and ten minutes of looking this did great.

I am willing to post more information about the coil if anyone is interested. But it really is nothing new, just a well executed mini DRSSTC.
This is my first DRSSTC and I was kind of surprised at how impressive these things are in a kind of scary way.

QCW coils put out refined thumps, like a cultured jazz drummer. Think Bernard Purdie. This thing is like Keith Moon, kind of barely under control.

Thanks to all the people who gave me help, both personally and from the archives.

Cheers.

Hey Alan,

That looks EXCELLENT! Very nice work you did there :-)

I have not seen the use of the plumbing support before. It is an excellent idea ... wish I had thought of that :-)

Dude.... That coil looks incredible! Those skm100 can definitely push some power. If you ever get time it would be awesome to see the coil in action.

Well at least the plastic drainpipe idea was new to someone. That is good.

I'm glad to see you comment on this build OneKone. As I mentioned, your coil was the model for this. I had a few IGBJT bricks in my bin, the SKM100
was one, so that determined the build. I spent a lot of time obsessing over your post including trying hard to figure out what coupling you were using. My initial
try had too much coupling and led to a flashover at very lower power. So I moved one turn out...

As far as a video I may do that some point in the future. Right now it's just too light for too long. It's strange, but operating this coil stresses me out
and I'm afraid that doing it late at night would lead to a night of bad sleep. High voltage is not a relaxing hobby. I was surprised to recently realize that after building
a dozen or so coils, my real joy is building them, not operating them.

I'm also contemplating doing a video of a complete tear-down of this coil while describing all the parts. I have not seen anyone do that.

Cheers.

I find the same thing for my DRSSTC.  It is fun, but stressful too.  I get stressed both by the care it takes to operate safely and the concern that something may go wrong and destroy hundreds of hours of work.  Summer is when weather is dry enough here for outside operation, but also when dark-enough starts around 9pm.  Neighbors with kids in bed also limit operation (due to sound level), except for holidays such as US Independence Day (July 4th).
