How go get single mode optic fiber to work

I bought this cheap optic fiber cable off of eBay
I can't get this to transmit with any LED I use
What can I do about it
Except for buying a optic transmitter that is

I tried something similar with my SC optic fiber cable. I took a 5mW green laser module to light into one side and thought, considering the brightness of the laser (on a white wall it‘s no more confortable to look at the dot), I should clearly see green on the other side. Actually I had to search for it, although I perfectly knew where it should be.
There was a green dot, but it was incredibly small and not bright at all; I had the impression, that it was the smallest point I could be able to make out.

So, where I want to get with this is
1) Although you‘re lighting up one side, you might not be able to see something on the other side
2) As the actual "conducting channel" is so small, there‘s not a lot of light going in. Therefore you need a very sensitive detector.

Single mode receivers and transmitters are completely different to multi-mode ones. Make sure you have everything matched (Rx, Tx and fibre)!

The Rx is a HFBR-2412tz which to my knowledge is a single-mode receiver so, IM SAFE!!

Sorry, but I think you'll need to look at the HFBR datasheets, research and search further (multimode patch leads are cheap on ebay thankfully). There is also a colour code - wikipedia should help you with that. Avoid yellow!

for all those wanting to transmit light using a fiber without emitter/receptor embedded in a connector (like with a bare laser) you have to use a fiber coupler (input and output) to focus the light into the fiber... and keep attention to numerical aperture and mode

might be useful for all those cables sitting in the bin
