Few questions before a TC show
« on: September 12, 2022, 12:52:58 PM »
Hello,
My university asked me to make a show with two of my DRSSTCs and I've been asking myself a few questions I cannot answer and haven't found much info.

1.) If you're running two coils close to each other and an arc forms between them, what is the risk of causing any damage? I've seen many videos with twin DRSSTCs which strike to each other without any problems, but what if both of your coils run at different frequencies and at different power levels?
I will be showing two of my DR coils, big one running @55kHz ~4kW (playing higher notes) and smaller long pulse coil @130kHz ~3kW which will be playing bass of MIDI songs.
I wonder what will happen if they share an arc path. Maybe having 130kHz current running through secondary of my 55kHz DR could induce some problems and vice-versa?

2.) I've seen people grounding their input mains wires and I've seen people don't. How necessary is it to shield mains input against strikes? I've seen coils striking into their mains input and running without any problems. What are your thoughts on this one?

Thanks for your answers.

1) your coils have to be 180 degree out of phase, reverse polarity on the primary, for arcs to connect.

2) use local RF ground rods, use spread out large pieces of metal plates or net, to act as a virtual ground plane or counter poise ground. Protect mains cables with shielding to the same potential. Then I still ground to mains, to keep all equipment at same potential difference, but with a local low impedance ground rod, the RF energy should use that instead of going through all the high impedance mains wiring.

Remember to have good ventilation for NOx gasses and Ozone. RF EMI can trigger burglar/fire alarms, get them deactivated in the area. Have fire extinguishers nearby.

Have a safety procedure to cut off power, have someone instructed in doing it, if you are the one getting electrocuted.

This is just a very short list of recommendations, a full list have many more points to risk evaluate on and document what you did to mitigate. But this is getting into the professional realm :)

Thanks for the answer Mads. I found some nice metal net I will be using to shield mains input.

Remember to have good ventilation for NOx gasses and Ozone.
The show will be outside so I guess there isn't any real concern about this.

1) your coils have to be 180 degree out of phase, reverse polarity on the primary, for arcs to connect.
I'm not so sure about this one. The arcs may leave hot air channels which then other coil's arcs can use to travel through.
