Help and questions about SGTC
« on: March 29, 2024, 08:29:50 PM »
Hello, I want to build my first SGTC like this
There is too much information out there and I can't process it all, I have already read a lot but without much information on how it works, I have a pair of flybacks, they look like they are new, unused, apparently for Samsung televisions. I am thinking of buying a cheap ZVS driver from eBay like the one in the video to turn on one of the flybacks.
Doubts
1. Which of the flybacks I have would work well for an SGTC like the one in the video above?
I have 2 flybacks, one that looks like an ordinary one that can be seen everywhere

and another that is super big and with very thick insulation like 0.5cm for the output and I have never seen one of this type. Does it have an integrated capacitor? But the core broke at the top and bottom. Could you just glue that core with some epoxy glue and have it work without a problem? Or I just take it from the other one since they are identical.

2. For the capacitors, since I don't have money to spend on capacitors, I plan to do the Leyden type with a 350mL brown glass bottle, for the internal plate filled with salt water or just water? the internal electrode is made of solid copper wire or Stranded type or a copper sheet. and they are filled to the top with water or water up to the height of the aluminum sheets of the outer plate.

3. For the spark gasp I plan to use a microwave oven fan, but what type of spark gasp would be better to use for this configuration, a static one or a rotating one? Could you suggest me some link about this?

4. What factors influence the length of the arc, the power source, the spark gasp, the capacitors, topload, or the resonance of the coil?

I understand how easy it is to get overwhelmed by such a project. I'd divide the project into two parts and not try and do it all at once. The two
parts would be 1) build a good flyback DC power supply 2) Build the SGTC and power it with (1).

I don't think that it's possible to tell which of you two flybacks is best for the job by just looking at them. I'm guessing that trying the ZVS driver
with each flyback will tell you how each works. Gluing a broken core can work. Swapping might be better.

A leyden jar has salt water inside to make the inner electrode (ie the water) more conductive.

Personally I'd make a static spark gap. Rotary are harder to make. And it's also a good way to overwhelm yourself trying to make your first coil
the best is every way. Getting it to work, then improving it step by step can be a less stressful path.

All the factors you mention can make the arcs longer. A tesla coil is a very interactive devices and all the parts work together to make an arc.
That said, larger arcs come from higher power coils. Generally this is a combination or higher operating voltages and higher peak currents.

Finally the best built and operating coil can have very small arcs if it is not tuned correctly. The most helpful guide I have found for getting a
coil into shape is JavaTC. More advanced tuning and design can be done with circuit design programs like LT Spice.

This thread talks to great length about a flyback powered SGTC.

Cheers.

From what I can see in the pictures, I think you will have a hard time using these particular flybacks. The reason I say this is that the ferrite cores appear to be completely enclosed in the plastic shell. You need enough of the core exposed so that you can wind your own primary coil around it for connection to the ZVS driver.

Well, I already ruled out the option of using it, maybe I'll make one with a small flyback core that I have.
