Tektronix current probes
« on: June 05, 2018, 10:27:37 AM »
The relatively old current probe Tektronix P6042.
This current probe allows currents from 1 mA/div to 1 A/div (DC to 50 MHz) to be measured without disconnecting the circuit:

The Tektronix current probe P6303, up to a maximum of 100 A.
The maximum frequency, depending on current level, is 15 MHz:

with the control module AM503B:

The Tektronix current clamp CT5 for even higher currents up to 1000 A, but only AC, maximum frequency, depending on current level, is 20 MHz:

I have a AM503 (the original, no suffix) along with an A6302 (aka P6302) and a A6303 (aka P6303). They were quite expensive (especially international shipping and VAT, which ~doubled the original price I paid on ebay US), but there is no real substitute which does the job when you need it - nothing else DC coupled can match the bandwidth and milli-amp level resolution you can get  (especially with the A6302). Judging by ebay prices in Europe I could sell all the kit for a lot more than I paid though, simply by selling it as tested rather than "as-is"!

My amplifier is not perfect - it drifts a LOT on warmup (I think this is normal, lots of matched transistors and old style design used inside) and the range switch can be a little touchy (it has a big cam operated assembly internally with attenuators switched in and out as needed). See pics someone took of theirs here: https://www.circuitsathome.com/measurements/spring-cleaning/. If you take any pictures of the inside of your AM503B I suspect it will look a lot different! I would like to replace the amplifier with something a bit more modern which lets the oscilloscope do more of the range/offset job, but it's a lot of effort to design something to do this.
