I have fried my router!
« on: May 04, 2020, 11:38:55 PM »
Hello everyone.

I am new here. I am learning English, excuse me if I make mistakes. I have reading you for a long time and learning a lot.

Since I was a child I have loved electricity and electronics. I am teacher of business but with the quarantine I have taken the opportunity to make a SSCT. It is made with 1.000 turns of 29 awg around 4cm PVC pipe. I have tried 3 different slayers exciter circuits.

The first one, was based in TIP31C transistor (Really 2 in parallel with ballast resistors). It supposed to include a diode, but it works better without it. But one day simply died. Trying in the kitchen with 12 volts, the induction stove star beeping.

The second one with 2 BD243 and the diode, but it didn´t work very well (It didn´t work without diode, I used an 1N4007, but I think it would better a UF4007, maybe this is the problem)

The third one was based in an IRPF260 MOSFET and works very well. Is the one that appears in the photos. With only 19 volts the sparks are 2 cm. But in another room break my router!!! How is that possible? Is very tiny and I see people playing with their SSCT near electronic devices.

I expect to share my adventures with the tesla coils with you and keep learning.

Best regards

Have you checked if there are ethernet cables in that wall or behind it?

It is optical fibre. But the power suply cable is near this wall.

I don´t know where try it. In every room there is a Aircon, a TV, a fridge...

Maybe in the ailse. No electronic devices in a 5 meters radius.

If it makes you feel any better, I managed to partly fry a router once too with a DRSSTC - it wasn't very near the coil either!

In this case the router wasn't completely dead - one port started having problems connecting to some devices, especially at gigabit speeds. The other ports seem OK, and I'm actually still using it!

I see.

But if this tiny coil at 30Volts and 2 cm sparks can fry a router bejind a wall at 4 meters...  How people conect these monsters Tesla coils inside thir house??

It not make sense to me.

Any advice for the future?

Managed to make my router resync when I ran a flyback about 1 meter away from it once, but never damaged anything (other than the flybacks and mosfets driving them!).

I never damaged any electronics with EMI, but I have knocked my old ADSL router off the line many times when running a 300 kHz SSTC, since that frequency is right in the upload spectrum of a ADSL line :)

I can unfortunately not find a screenshot I made back then, from my router administration webpage when it showed -2,147,483,648 dB signal strength while I ran the coil.

I don´t know. It is my first SSCT and I can´t play with it  :-\

It is very strange.

Another strange thing is taht the best sparks appear when I put the primary 5cm over the base. This is the reason of the pink plastik foam.

Is that anti static foam? As that can be conductive at high voltages.

Pink foam is generally for ESD prevention, typically polyethylene with some additive to make it very slightly conductive.

Perhaps your coil is injecting RF noise into the mains wiring via the 19V power supply. I can't see any other ground connection in your photo - maybe try adding a separate RF ground.

Add a "counterpoise" ground - e.g. a metal tray or tin foil sheet under the wooden base, connected to the ground on your PCB. Also (if you don't already have one), make a common-mode choke in the power supply cable by winding a few turns on a ferrite ring.

...

Thank you.

Is it safe conect that plate to the ground? The ground is also connected to the other home appliances.

Where must I put the choke in the power supply? In the AC or DC wire?

And other question.  My coil works better without topload. Is that normal? I try different tipes and sizes.

Coils almost always work better with a top load.

Common-mode chokes can help on either side of a power supply, on the AC input or on the DC output.

In general I recommend grounding a counterpoise to line ground.  That's what I always do.  I also like to have my counterpoise against real ground (dirt/grass) or against a concrete floor that's against ground.

Ok, I will folow your advice SteveN87 and davekni.  Thank you again.

Any recomendation for the diameter of the ferrita ring?

Material matters as much as diameter.  If you have old power supplies around, find the common-mode choke on its AC input - the toroid core with two separated windings, one on each side.  That's ideal as it already has 20-40 turns, and impedance goes as turns^2.

If you want to see how well you're doing with grounding/common-mode isolation, you could build this sophisticated bit of test gear  ;D:

It's just a clip-on ferrite with 7 turns of wire and an LED - no series resistor or reverse-protection diode. If you clip it round the wire to your counterpoise/ground, the LED should glow brightly; clip it on the mains lead to your 19V PSU and it should be dim or off - if it's bright then RF is probably still entering your mains wiring.

Thank you for your answers.

I have a ferrite toroid of 4cm external diameter. I will use that, but if very big. I am going to buy more electronic components. If you think another smaller can works well, please tell me.

By the way, Can I touch the sparks? I see people touching them, but i am not sure...
